Astrology, Combustion, and the Problem with Chariot

Chariot is a little known astrological concept wherein planets are shielded from the harmful effects of the Sun under certain conditions. Reaching its height of popularity in the Hellenistic tradition, it quickly fell out of favor in the Medieval Arabic and Latin traditions as reception theory took over. Today, many students learn about chariot as an historical aside and potential salvation to combust planets. Are planets assisted by chariot, or like Icarus, are planets too close to the Sun beyond saving?

Wow your perspective and the extent of your familiarity with the subject is really impressive. I hope you write your own book on this someday.

Great points. I have several example charts of clients with Mars/Sun combust in Gemini, Taurus and other non-fire signs where Mars seems to be lame, without its normal power. Following a traditional combust narrative. And an example of a very Marsy person who has Mars combust the sun in Leo (2 degree orb) and its a whole different thing. Mars is also square the moon and Ceres in this person's chart. And the Sun/Mars conjunction is in the 8th house (APC), end of the 7th within 2 degrees of the 8th acc to Regiomontanus. However, the notion of combust working differently when there is reception can make sense. Perhaps when there is triplicity (Morin, Schoener version in this case).

Apologies if you’ve already done this, but I’d love to see a video on the condition and orb of a cazimi. I personally use a whole degree, but I understand that many Medieval astrologers used ‘17ish. Kinda just wondering if you’ve seen a difference in your practice.

Thanks, this was very timely as I spent some time today tracking the Sun and Mars!

I have combust planets in Leo and always imagined if the Sun was receiving them and easing the combustion, I think it makes sense. or at least it makes easier for the Sun to use/absorve the planets. but I also think that being received by malefics (like being with Saturn with Capricorn) is not necessarily good, like in 2020... nice video !

Can the Moon be combust/ under the beams? I've heard it called "under the bonds" but can't find any information on this anywhere 😞

jupiter, mars, sun, moon and mercury in virgo, only mercury is free from combustion. i think its gonna take me a while to wrap my head around how empowering or debilitating this is bahaha considering every single one of my planets has reception back to mercury in virgo

i am proposing my own theory despite being no Ptolemy or even well educated on the subject... I'd like to suggest, suppose Mars & Mercury are conjunct in Scorpio while combust....perhaps they are not going down without a fight and they got Thelma & Louise energy ....or maybe the birth and cycle determine the type death ...a Mars born in Cancer,, squaring everyone during it's life, might welcome death??? :)

Do you find in your practice that when a combust natal planet is the lord of the year, it gains back its natural abilities compared to its normal, combust state?

I'm not Ryan but I'd like to offer you my perspective. I'd say combustion has the same effect on the Loy as always. The planet is weakened, hidden or debilitated. Above all, that combustion is part of your natal promise.

@@Applepie910 I believe I heard Nick Dagan Best saying this combust LOY theory and was curious to hear Ryhan’s client experience on this. I agree with you. So far my own experience on this is that there seems to be no change in combust status even when LOY. But I am certainly open to learn otherwise.
