One small tip: Lightspeed reduces Ascend's cast time as well. If you're in a pinch and HAVE to cast resurrect, you can always reduce it's cast time by 2.5s.

This tip came in really handy when I did the first few Stormblood dungeons for thr first time. Turning a nearly 8 second hard cast res into a 5.2 second one makes a huge difference, and helped saved a few runs for me.

I did a bit of testing and I learned that the Harmony of Body effect from Astrodyne also reduces the cast time of Ascend and stacks with Lightspeed. Here's what I got form the cast time changes in the tooltips ingame: Ascend base cast time: 7.5s Ascend with Lightspeed: 5.15s Ascend with Astrodyne (Harmony of Body effect): 6.75s Ascend with Lightspeed + Astrodyne (Harmony of Body effect): 4.64s I just found this interesting, that both skills stack with each other for a faster res time.

When we have a lot of dead people, I tell the other healer to focus healing, pop lightspeed and go to town

One thing that i recommend, instead of making 8 "Play" macros for each party member, is to make a mouseover macro for "Play". That way you can simply go over the preferred party member, without switching your primary target, and apply the dmg buff to it. It helped me a lot

Play macros targetting party members don't switch your target. Also, mousing over is too slow, it's faster to just press a keybind.

@@belphegor_dev But, in this instance, they're using a seperate hotbar for 8 additional actions that ALL would require seperate keybinds (when players struggle for keybind space as it is), or require moving your mouse and clicking anyway - Surely it's easier to just make a single MO macro? A tiny amount of extra mouse movement (in a game where mouse movement isn't even "that" needed outside of using RMB to pan your camera for off-arena based mechanics) is nothing compared to the huge QoL gain of not having to click on a target, press your button, then cycle back to the boss/mob group.

I've been a WHM main since 2.2 and I decided to level AST through Endwalker... oh boy, the stress of learning a new job, maintaining dps AND keeping seven other people alive!

I’m a little color deficient so I can’t tell the difference between the colors of the cards. The dev team must have taken this into account just like their colorblind settings because the other way to tell if the card goes to melee/tank or healer/range is if there are crosses(melee/tank) or o’s(range/healer) on the left and right side of the cards.

Listening to your comment about astro requiring 4 actions to weave play onto a teammate after a GCD makes me happy that I chose to play this class on controller. For those who don't know, controller users can "soft" target their party members using up and down on the dpad. Once you use a spell or ability on a soft target, the game will go back to targeting your original target (usually the boss) So what you want to do is while malefic is casting, soft target a party member, and when the cast finishes press play. One button pressed and you've applied a card to your party member and are back to targeting the boss. Enjoy!

Hey im also playng on controller but i feel like its almost impossible to play as a healer with controller because of targeting. Do you have any targeting advice or is there really only the soft targeting?

@@lora4274 Up and down on the dpad is pretty effective for me and I've got WHM50, SCH60, and AST60. After all, you can only move as quickly as your GCDs allow, so there's time to plot your next move.

Great info, very useful, just his voice… nothing wrong with him and again very useful info. Can’t pin it. You can us your function keys to target group members. F1 targets you and the rest go in order. So if you don’t want to use your mouse to target party members just use your f keys.

I’ve found that with the addition of Astrodyne astrologian’s mp economy is so good I don’t need to use lucid dreaming on cooldown like I do for all other healers. Instead I can save it for when I really need the mp like after I’ve rezed a lot of party members or I’ve died.

For real AST MP management is so good. I'm still a new healer and I enjoy playing WHM but lucid dreaming is a *necessity* for it...a raise is a goodbye to half of my bar in a raid (tho ofc I still gotta learn how to manage my MP more efficiently but still!!). So imagine my surprise in the same raid when I had to raise people and my MP barely had a dent. Lucid dreaming just felt like a lil extra help I didn't need to worry about too much.

Was concerned there was an actual rotation I was not doing but glad to see it's just "use when and where". Knowing what the skills do is essential (dignity). It is a lot to keep track of but when you big brain predicted the huge party damage and got everyone back to full instantly its a great feeling.

Thank you! This was super helpful and insightful. I think the only thing you could've added was a tip on debuffs with a white line above the icon are the ones you can use Esuna on. AST has such gorgeous spells and abilities, and I love the fortune teller aspect of it. I want it to be my main healer, but everything seems so overwhelming. This guide helped me understand the abilities more and when to use them, which I really appreciate. I love how things feel faster on this class; I love to use lightspeed to spam down mobs on dailies and FATEs. This video has helped ease my AST anxiety, so thanks again!

You could do /ac "play" and just hover on the party member you want to cast it on. Way simpler.

The play macro next to the party list is a game changer idea! I've spent days trying to figure out ways to optimize my bars and keybinds. I've also added 2 extra bars next to it to run Esuna and Synastry in the same manner.

Very nice guide, as a healer main that didn't play Astro properly before, I found the tips mentioned quite nice ( that play card on party member) even though macros in this game are not as optimal as they should. I don't consider myself a 5head Astro player, but I use Undraw between dungeon pulls so I can stack the right symbols for big pulls/boss fights, never used it in fights though, no fight has that big of a down time.

As someone completely new astro and healing, this guide is really helpful. Especially the macro thing. I was wondering how the hell I have to play cards in time between healing and dmg.

Tanks stutterstep when pulling trash when they want to make sure they have all of the aggro and then pop sprint to pull a second group before they lose that aggro on the first group. Not saying it's a good idea, just giving you a heads up in case your curious.

Worth noting that the mitigation from Collective Unconscious lasts for 5 seconds after the bubble goes down. So timing it well, you can get both without actually having to channel it. The ability spam in macros isn't so it "casts faster", but to simulate ability queuing.

This has been so informative! Thanks for walking through each skill and different scenarios when to use them for :) Would you be able to include the macro list mentioned in the video?

@Justaresearcher pretty sure thats apples to orange. Asylum should be compared to collective unconscious. Almost equal to Earthly star is assize. While assize does less heals in either case with 140 potency less and 320 potency less, Assize is 45 second ogcd versus Earthly Star 1 min ogcd. Taking it a step further is liturgy of the bell which if not talking about dps, will outheal Earthly star in multiple hit raid wides. However whm has the most powerful ogcd single target heals and thus lots of panic heal abilities with lilies that Ast lacks. Most Ast ogcds have long recast time up to 3 minutes. Whm ogcds with longest is Bene but whm also have instant recasts with afflatus solace and low cast times like Divine Benison, afflatus rapture, and Assize.

Damn, I mained scholar since the beginning and never bothered to lv astro. Now I started to run potd with it and I fell in love :D

You forgot to mention how pretty all the spell effects are! ;) Seriously tho, there are two things you talked about that I'm extremely grateful for. The first is how old abilities have changed, particularly the card system. The second is all the new abilities and the most effect means of using them. I just found out I was basically using only half of what Horoscope can do, for example. Thanks for the clear, detailed breakdown!

Thank you for this guide it helped me come to grip with all these changes being a PS players with so many abilities helped me map my controller out a lot. i wish redraw would change into undraw after its first use just to cut the amount of abilities. I do find that all the abilities are useful however far to many and having to choose which ones are on my main hotbar and the others on my second was interesting which abilities i find myself using the most and the others with long cool down or situational uses on my second again thank you for the guide. I really liked the play1-8 macro is there a way to use that on controller lol

What a nice macro but did you know about the focus target and the focus target macro? You can target boss and anyone else at the same time all the damage skills going to boss in a focus target and all the healing going to a normal target. As a bonus you always can see what the boss is going to cast. And there is exist the mouse over casting mechanic but i find it super uncomfortable but many people use it.

To save macro slots, you can simply make a mouseover macro for the Play ability, so all you need to do is mouse over the party member, press play and keep casting your DPS abilities on your targeted enemy.

@@dash1t12 that could also be an idea but i have the hold both triggers hotbar already filled up with the card abilities and the other side with the sects back when that was a thing. I should probably change those hotbars again. Its fine for me to just cycle through the party list with the dpad and then snap back to the enemy with l1 + dpad but still thanks for the reply. (Also i just remembered that that is also how i use my normal single target healing abilities with the healer jobs, so its also kinda ingrained in my brain like that.)

@@foxeeey7907 Try double weaving play that way in a full party. It's nearly impossible.

The reason people use macros with duplicate lines is because actions get queued by the game client if they cannot be executed straight away, except for macros. Having many "/play " increases the odds of "play" actually working (you can also use all 20 lines actually). However, there is still a small probability that it does not execute, and that's why macros are not advisable at a high level. That said, this particular macro with the bar layout must indeed have been used by every single AST since a guide was first put on the internet.

I have a rez macro with a sound and a simple target declare but I notice it often doesn't cast the rez, but the sound and declare always goes off in chat. Sometimes it is awkward because in a pinch I will think I have cast it, then use the swiftcast charge on a glare instead. Im new and just use PF for now so not using disc to communicate with the other healer. There's no real way around this?

Super amazing guide. Any thoughts about using a mouseover macro for playing cards instead of having the 8 down the side? I know the downsides of mouseovers, but for playing cards it seems worth as you don't have to click on 8 buttons next to the party members rather than just their bar?

Great guide!! Only thing that worries me is for an ast opener where you store cards and play them 2.4 seconds apart while weaving under lightspeed. If I click the macro which spams play, i draw my 2nd card while the macro is still spamming, wouldn't it give the card to the same person since the macro is still going on?

or you could use delveui which allows mouseover macros. This would be similar to WoW's healing

Glad I ran into this when it came out, I've never thought of the GCD -> oGCD -> GCD since maining AST years ago. It was more of a "use all your oGCDs (cards) immediately then divinity then attack" but EW has made that opener somewhat easier?

whats your seal use strategy? what im doing right now is using the seals only in divination windows and saving 1 card for that same windows with 2 stacks for draw. I think is the best damage whise tho the opening get really busy

Does drawing a card (any) give any buffs before its played or it something similar to mnks with stances where it let's you do weapon skills but does not buff in anyway?

There are no buffs applied until you play the card

Just get a mouse and keyboard and get good using F buttons to choose your party members

Hmm....if you entered it right it shouldn't be typing at all. Compare how it looks for you with how it looks in the video to make sure

I absolutely love the class but it's the solo duties where I run into the most trouble. I had to give up on FF14 due to the fact that I could not get past "Worthy of His Back." The advice I've been given ran the gamut from "Get good" to "AST's damage output sucks. Do it with another job." 7.0 is supposed to show yet another AST retooling. Guess I'll just have to wait and see if that includes a tweak in damage capabilities.

I doubt AST damage is going to see much of a buff but the solo duty should be possibly either way. Not sure about what kinda gear you have and if it needs an upgrade maybe

@@Jolsn My gear is maxxed out. After seeing videos of the fight though, I'm pretty much certain I don't have the mechanics down as well as I should. It's a very unforgiving fight with very little reaction time. Make enough mistakes and I fail the duty before I really got a chance to start it. :(

I noticed that you're not binding your mouse to skills. It can be a way to get your abilities away from T and Y A keybind that's also really comfortable is SHIFT+WheelUp and SHIFT+WheelDown. However, these don't work in FFXIV. I'd have to make an AHK macro to make that work.

I don't think I'd be able to use the early MMO mice either, but if it had 4 buttons on the side I'd be ok. nobody will be 5Head enough to undraw and waste 30sec to chance another draw with a different seal. I'd rather miss out that 5% personal dps and card myself after astrodyne instead (jk DO NOT DO THIS). neat macro for the draw on party list btw, would recommend new ASTs due to tab targeting.

You can use mouse over macros for not just play ability but for single target spells works for even sage kardia. Anything that is single target would benefit from this gcd and ogcd. I use them for all my single target heals and abilities for all my healers. Rdm vercure I’m debating about making it for. You have to go to settings tho and turn off show error messages tho because sometimes it would show a error message. Never had a problem with the macro besides the random error messages. If people ask on here I can write out the mouse over macro I just need to get to my computer to open up the macros I have

Why not use mouseover macros for the playing of the drawn cards? With the same lines of casting as you have but just on mouseover. I'm a long time player but overall noob so honestly curious and not giving you the "play my way cuz it's more better" attitude lol

For me personally this method is smoother when weaving. Mouseover Macros often didn‘t activate for me

not really sure why people hate mouseover macros in this game, when they get used for ogcds they dont mess up the gcd, and if theyre used for gcds its on abilities that are only used if your dps is being dropped for gcd heals anyways, make your lives easier boys and girl

Even after playing it for half a year, I have never seen the green and purple cards color, I always noted for myself the three signs for meele and ranged. thank you!

On the topic of Undraw: Undraw was used for console players. If I recall correctly they were unable to get rid of their cards in the previous system and it needed a way to balance their RNG. Today this is easily replaced with Redraw at level 40(?) and just simply playing the cards as they're not quite as detrimental as before. Interesting to note that Redraw will also not give you the same card you previously had. This seems like a no-brainer, but in some games the card (or resource) is not removed from the pool.

I do like undraw in dungeons when i have 2 different signs and there's 30 seconds free to try and get the 3rd sign

I highly dislike how they made the card system more difficult with the macro - you used to be able to use Arcana icon (only the icon) for the Play macro on your party list, because the icon would either be red or purple, for melee or ranged, you didn't have to look at your actual card icon in the job meter to distinguish melee or ranged. Now you have to take an additional mental processing step. The fact that there are only 2 card types, melee or ranged, yet we still have 6 different cards..........but only 3 different seals? Wut?! I'd rather them just get rid of the seal system, only have 2 cards, melee and range, so we don't have to play mini games while tackling savage mechanics and keeping a party alive.

great guide. As a general recommendation: Use targetting macros for almost all of your healing spells. you can also build them in priority order (Like heal my mouseover, if theres is no mouseover, heal my target. if there is no target, heal my focustarget, if all of that doesn't exist, just heal me). all my healing spells that require a target look like this: /micon "Spellname" /ac "Spellname" /ac "Spellname" /ac "Spellname" /ac "Spellname" This way i never have to take the boss out of target and just hover my mouse over the player i want to heal, that works with both playermodels and party/alliance windows.

Don't use macros for gcds.

Don't worry about angry people for doing your mechanics properly. I've gotten yelled at by an idiot healer who died on a boss in a dungeon and rezzed them as RDM. They threatened not to heal which in turn for rezzing them again as they died on the boss again i got kicked for rezzing them. I did my job properly but because he was the healer I got the kick. Anyways just laugh at people who can't do their mechanics properly but you're doing yours properly and they get angry stupidly. Also Repose is okay when you are running fates.

Would you say AST is the most involved healer? I'm looking for a not so complex healer job.

AST is pretty difficult to play, lots of buttons to press with a lot of them requiring weaving. If you want an easy healer, play White Mage. Scholar and Sage are less mechanical than AST but they do their job my shielding and mitigating rather than healing, which is weird if you haven't healed normally before.

General healing tips (and some AST specific tips) for anyone planning on raiding as a healer. Every GCD heal you do (Benefic/Helios) is a DPS loss. Anytime you need to GCD spot heal a DPS that gets hit by a mechanic or a Tank that doesn't mitigate properly is a straight up DPS loss. Every time you need to Benefic II because you're out of Essential Dignity charges, that's a Malefic you lose for dps. You don't have to always enhance Horoscope if the lower potency heal is all you need. Raiding as an AST is mostly drawing on cooldown and Earthly Star on cooldown (this is AFTER you prog, they are not as prog friendly as its Pure healer counterpart WHM). The mechanics are paced so that Earthly Star will heal the party AND provide DPS. You just need to figure out when you star Pre-pull. Some raids want you to Star at 10/7/5/3 seconds, it will line up with the first raidwide and then with every other raidwide down the road, you have a whole 10 second window and a few seconds of drifting to make sure it's doing a huge heal and still doing damage.

Healers don’t have rotations. Use when needed basically. Sure there’s optimization, but it’s not a rotation.

so no more lady/lord? :( they will be missed edit: oh they are there but not the same, they will be missed >

Thankfully on controller you don't have to select the party member you want to use your card on. Just target it using the dpad and use the card, while still having the enemy on target. After using the card you focus automatically back to the enemy.
