OMG!!! How can people let these places go abandoned? They are works of art. The furnishing are beyond anything they make today-the craftsmanship is amazing. Please continue to take us to more palaces. Love your videos-best on you tube.

It's D. Pedro IV (Peter the fourth) of Portugal and D. Pedro I (the first) of Brazil. Fun fact: he renounced both thrones. First he renounced the throne of Portugal to be Emperor of Brazil, wich he himself, as the liberal he was, led to independence (Brazil used to be a portuguese colony); he renounced in favour of his daughter, D. Maria II (Mary the second) who was still an infant, seven years old. So, to rule the country until she'd become of age, he appointed his brother, D. Miguel (Michael). It so happens that said brother was an absolutist, closed the Parliament and appointed himself as king, literally robbing the throne from his niece. It was then that D. Pedro forfeited also the throne of Brazil (being succeeded by his son, D. Pedro II) and came to Portugal, declaring war to his brother, to defend the rights of his daughter and also the ideals of liberalism.

One thing that I really love in your videos is that you leave no trace. You enter, film, and leave. Nothing stolen or left behind. For urban entries, like when you had to go on the scaffold. Why don't you take a couple of sets of workmans overalls and borrow some safety hats. If anyone saw you, they'd think you worked there :D :D Plus, would love to see more of the palaces. Such beautiful workmanship in them.

The Goverment cant keep up mantainning them and restore them all, they are too many!!! Just to give you an idea, the place I live, each neighbourhood used to be a farm of a Lord,so each neighbourhood has at least one palace or huge Mansion! Some were restored and reused, others were occupied by homeless or are just a nice place to make a barbecue with some friends :/ recently they made a new law so people could buy some of those buildings if they restore them!

20:49 looks like a Portuguese navy officer uniform from the early 19th century. Like in many countries across Europe, many rich families lost their fortunes and presently their heirs don't have the money to renovate and care for the property and this is what happens, there are hundreds of these "small" palaces for sale across Portugal waiting for the right buyer, some of them are real bargains, had I the money to invest would buy one and renovate it into a small boutique hotel.

Cork tiles in bathrooms were very common in the 70s. Before the widespread appearance of central heating and decent ventilation cold bathrooms and hot water meant your brand new paint job peeled off the walls really fast so everyone and his dog (well in Britain anyway) used cork tiles which insulated the cold walls and prevented the condensation... simples! :-) These palaces are really something. Pena Palace down near Loule has ornate ceilings but not in that league!!!
