Aston Martin DBX - The Most Exciting Sports SUV! Full Road Review

SUV Sports Car? Welcome back to RBR, and to the The SUV with the soul of a sports car! Built in new St Athans plant in Wales, it’s a crunch moment car for Aston. The last of Andy Palmer’s second century legacy before the coming of AMG Legend Tobias Moers as the new CEO.
Car industry fact: SUV’s make money, and this DBX has been planned since 2015. Looking at the Cayenne’s success it’s easy to see why: they make money in the right countries, with the biggest demographics. So for a company wanting to boost their customer reach and build cash reserves, this DBX is a big deal. As we saw, the first Concept DBX was an utterly bizarre one. Thankfully, they settled on a much more mainstream shape, something a supercar customer can use as their go to school vehicle.
It’s an odd one though: it’s priced bang smack in Urus and Bentayga territory, starting at 158k, you’ll get to 170/180 with some ease on a configurator, probably a faster than the DBX could reach 180MPH. But the Urus has major performance advantages with 650 hp, 0-60 in close to 3 seconds… vs the DBX’s 540 and 4.3. Heck, a fully spec’d RSQ8 has 600 BHP and 3.8 seconds for 126k!
So what can the Aston bring to the table to differentiate itself in this fiercely competitive market, it ways that it’s siblings in the DB11 and Vantage seem to do with ease? We will explore this on the drive.
Many assume that since the engine and gearbox are AMG sourced, alongside the infotainment and some switch gear means that the whole car must be Mercedes sourced. E63 clad mules didn’t help that case but that is simply not the case. Just like the DB11, this is a whole New SUV platform, clean sheet for the SUV. Bonded aluminium just like the sports car Aston platform. Being their own platform has given them freedoms in terms of chassis, design and technologies. The shape of the car, it is shorter in height than the rivals, and sometimes seems the size of a car the class below. This is in part due to the smooth edges and short overhangs. The Vantage similarities no doubt help. Yet despite this, it’s class leader in interior space. Theres also a flat floor with no sill to climb over, making it the easiest in class to get in and out of.
In terms of internals, of course it AMG V8 as seen used in Vantage and DB11 but it only has 542BHP and 700NM, and a slowish 4.3second 0-60. The 9 speed is apparently also Mercedes based, but of course with Aston’s own software and driving modes as we will discover. It has Triple volume air suspension linked to a 48v anti roll system - 1400nm of anti roll force per axle. And the ride height is fully adjustable - All wheel drive system has the eDiff limited slip in the rear, torque split fully variable.
SO all of this, very typical of today’s performance SUVs. On paper at least, we will have to see how the custom platform fairs when we drive it! Today we explore:

I’ll admit, I was rewatching all the Potter films when I filmed this last year. And it’s a British brand, hence the idea. Haha. 😆 As for DBX, the stats say I should be unimpressed, but when have the stats been the be all and end all? This handles beautifully and sounds brilliant. Now if they can just up the power, add bigger brakes and sort the design! Winner.

Raz, I can't begin to express how awesome it is to listen to your initial impressions of the new DBX, then follow along with you as you let the vehicle "talk" to you. That look on your face as you listen and begin to understand the vehicle by it's dynamics is priceless! Your analysis is helpful when it comes to how to spec a DBX, and it's fun to imagine Aston Martin adopting your ideas into future updates. RBR is a joy that more motorheads must experience. The DBX is my favorite car at the moment. Aston Martin styling and interior choices with the glorious AMG engine. People are seriously sleeping on these

Unfortunately Aston seems to of out-priced themselves again , especially for the Tech, but aesthetically I love it.... Also a simple re map will see this around 650bhp, I believe my C63s Ed1 got 600.

Luckily the E63S version of this engine which is in this Aston has bigger turbos, so a stage 1 tune is more like 750hp+
the vehicle "xray" of the chassis and suspension alone makes this channel worth subbing to. the vehicle swaps are also very cool. I bet it takes a lot of work to do it

Great review chap, keep up the good work. From what I can recall, the sole reason for no CCM brakes was that (albeit very unlikely), steels are better suited for going off-road. More good stuff to come from that chassis platform...
Really enjoyed another review. Lovely car but ouch the price. Definitely one to buy as a second owner. Have you thought of doing a watch collection review as you seem to have some really nice models.

Thanks for the nice review. I have read a couple of reviews that are critical of "soft breaks" in the DBX. Did you find this to be the case, as well?

As SUV’s go it’s One of the best looking cars out there brilliant engine brilliant chassis love the interior it would be nice if it had a more up-to-date infotainment system though looks old compare to some of them in the market
Would you not agree that no heads up display for such an expensive car is strange?? My 2013 650i has it and I love that tech! Otherwise, it’s a beauty!
The lift gate glass has quite a rake angle. Is that why they can get away without a rear wiper?

You compare the handling and gearbox to a vantage or DBS, how does it feel compared to a Cayenne, Urus or Audi Q8?
It sounds so good.... sounds like £10 min on fuel but sounds great!
ANd it is a simply beautiful SUV in a market segment that tends to be utilitarian rather than pretty. Having 'only' 405Kw means nothing since when are you going to use more other than on a race track? I saw one for real yesterday on display and it was GORGEOUS.
I bet the DBX Q JWW Edition has 25k suspension on it

How does it compare to equivalent Mercedes GLE 500 AMG, that costs £60k less? Bearing in mind, that AMG Merc gets the latest electronics and the optional off road package? By the way .... Urus has torque vectoring and 4 wheel steering ... hence slightly heavier steering.

Good thing the registration plate is KJ69EWW, not KE69JWW. The car would ask GBP25K and free Litchfield upgrades if it were like that.

I wanted my mom to get a cool car she doesn't like sedans like I do so we agreed on an SUV.. I was like okay we need a bentayga but here in Vegas they were sold out and I am not a patient person so then we got invited to a Aston Martin event (my mom has always wanted an Aston since the DB9) so of course we went. We saw the dox and I could tell she fell in love ill admit its pretty cool so we bought one basically top of the line.. we've had it for about 2 months and my biggest complaints with it are as follows (Infotainment- I love the position of the NON TOUCHSCREEN its a perfect touchscreen but its not so that's really fvckin stupid.) welp there you go that's it the only problem I truly have with it is the infotainment which is jack shit it lacks customization and doesn't have touchscreen capabilities but its perfect for touchscreen literally PERFECT placement and reachability. so all in all I would recommend it, its a super fun and lovable car with great sound would recommend just Aston Martin pls fix the damn infotainment I would pay them thousands to make it a touchscreen

If cars with OPF can still sound this good. No other brands have any excuse why their cars (especially the v8/ top of the range cars) are almost silent. Looking at you Audi. Looking at you too Porsche 911.
Aston have absolutely hit this out of the park 🙌🙌 stunning looking it makes the Bentley look like a taxi a ugly one beautiful car no doubt 👌👌
The design is nice (even when not my favorite in this class) and it looks fun to drive, but for me, this should be a maximum of 110K - or better less for what it offers as a package.

That will take this car to a Cayenne, GLE63 rival. Not really where Aston want to place themselves, plus it’s an all-new bespoke platform. That alone cost shed loads of money, so I think the pricing at 180k is reasonable. The Urus costs easily 40k more, despite sharing chassis with Audi, Porsche and Bentley.

It has more power, handles even better, and has more modern tech inside. - That`s why I think that car shouldn`t be in the same price class. I see your point that it is more expensive for them to make but in the end, you need also to justify the price in the market. It`s a tuff competition.

@@marcnobel3938 Plus, the Urus has the brand value of being a Lamborghini, so they can command a big premium. I was going to say Aston may bring down the price if the DBX doesn’t meet sales targets, however, I don’t think it will. At my local Aston dealer, sales have tripled compared to 2019, mostly due to the availability of the DBX. So it seems to be the cash cow Aston really need.
Sounds better then the urus
I hate the idea of reverse RPM gauge, it messes with your mind and not in a good way.
Porsche Cayenne looks so much like it and better reliability

The suv is just like a normal car in size (except for full size suvs), so why do people go for suvs instead of cars? What is the difference between car and suv and crossover? Isn't this aston more of a crossover?

most of the time carbon brakes are worse than the standards because they need to heat up. bit of a scam really particularly on an suv that isn't gonna be hooned enough for the breaks to even heat up

Hmm...the rear looks very awkward and that bulging “spoiler” below the rear window looks dreadful. The interior is typical Aston Martin...”Mondeo Ghia” and simply not good enough...it is at best,underwhelming. It has plenty of good things going for it but best bought used with a big discount off list...£85/90,000 and it makes more sense. 🙂🙂
