Astigmatism is a refractive defect produced by an abnormal curve on the eye's surface. Light enters the eye in two spots rather than the single point required for proper vision. Normally the curvature on the surface is equal from left to right and from top to bottom, giving the surface of the eye an equally round shape like a ball.
Astigmatism causes one of these curves to be extended, resulting in an oval-shaped eye surface. This could, for example, lead light refracted by the cornea's horizontal axis to focus on a different place than light refracted by the vertical axis.
Headaches, eye strain, and exhaustion are all signs of astigmatism. Milder cases of astigmatism may induce blurriness only at particular distances, whereas severe examples may cause blurriness at all distances. Consult your doctor if you feel you have astigmatism. Contact lenses or refractive surgery are two effective correction methods.
