There's over a million cataloged asteroids, and new ones discovered all the time. Like this one, which wasn't known about until January 21st. They "say" this sometimes multiple times a year.

If an astroid is going to hit earth.The best way to stop it would be a missle with a proximity fuse to detonate it in front of it so the blast force could propel the astroid away from earth without fragmenting it.

most of the planet wreckers (1-2km plus) have been spotted and orbits plotted , its the city destroyers size (up to 200 meters) that would pose the greatest risk as they are far more numerous
