The only way these asteroids could hit and cause actual damage to Earth is if scientists make their calculations showing it will hit us if we don't do something about it, then they try to hit it or something to steer it away and it backfires, causing it to actually hit us head on.

The problem with your assumption is the 'they'. You are assuming that only a small handful of individuals are somehow keeping hundreds if not thousands of physicists, mathematicians, and observers from reaching the same conclusion OR 'they' are keeping aforementioned individuals silenced. While it certainly exists in the realm of possibility, I don't think it would be the most likely scenario.

@@The1stDukeDroklar There are still limits to what current technology can accomplish. I don't think we have the computing power available at this point in time to accurately model the near infinitesimal variables needed to use solar energy to safely re-route an asteroid tumbling through space. Imagine tying a rocket to a baseball and trying to model exactly how it moves as it randomly darts around. Edit: If there was even a possibility, the surface of the asteroid would first need to be modeled and the makeup of the asteroid would need to be determined. If that where to be done on this pass, then most likely, we'd have to wait until the next pass to do anything anyways. The fact that their predictions are still indeterminate, tells us that scientists have not yet found a way to model it's movement precisely with the technology and information available.

IF. Such a wonderful statement... The chixalub impactor was, to directly quote from Riley Black's "The Last Days of the Dinosaurs" book, "so fast that if we were to stand at a single point and try to watch it, we would feel it rather than see it. It (the asteroid) traveled at 44,738mph. It's not even blink and you'll miss it fast. It's watch for it and you'll miss it fast." While apophis is not world ending, its speed will be incredible. Check out the book, it is a wonderful piece to read. Almost a direct (or as direct as humanly possible) hour by hour, day by day breakdown of the K-PG extinction event.

I've seen this one. Captain Carter surrounds the asteroid and goes in hyperspace to travel through the Earth. SG-1 saved us that day.

One night at Agana, Guam the view of the "Southern Cross" was so powerful, " " "beyond words." " "

yeah i’m sceptical, i find it hard to believe it will come that close and not smash into us… if it’s going to be closer to use than our own satellites are and it’s 1100ft long it’s not a good sign

Inside of geostationary orbit.... those sit further out than the usual orbits of some satellites..

Calculation of the gravitational effects of all the expected flyby visitors to the asteroid must be a real headache, even for master mathematicians and computer programmers. Hope there is one program already developed to do instant updates as the asteroid orbit experiences any track changes. Otherwise it could be pulled closer to earth rather than pushed away.

It's already being done and has been for a long time. It's known as Astrometry which is accomplished by Astrometrists (vs Astronomers) who study the positions and movements of celestial bodies. Their work also allows for the tracking of objects in space and the detection of previously unknown planets. You can go back to sleep. I'll let you know should a large, previously unknown, celestial object be about to impact the Earth near you.

It's not really difficult to compute, Einstein's gravitation math is not really complex. Modern videogames are much more complex, as other commentor said, it has been done by hand before computers. Galaxy scale it gets heavy though.

In 1988, I saw a "vision" of a comet moving slowly across the sky. It only lasted for a few seconds but it was unmistakable. It had a short, fiery tail. It was moving in such a way as to indicate a impact was not imminent. It was the only "vision" I've ever had. I've always wondered if it was a warning of what's to come someday. Could it be Apophis in 2029?

Hope I’m still alive to see it impact Earth. I’d hate to miss it. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

collisions would cause a cascade of damage, not a "detour of course" our satelites fly at speeds of 17.000 mph/28,000 km/h to maintain orbital velocity. if something makes contact, without matching speed means debris is going to break off and fly everywhere. paint flakes the size of a pea, cause shotgun sized cavitation into the hull of the international space station. in regards to asteroids hitting other asteroids, it is surprisingly unlikely considering the vast scope of our solar system, compared with the density of our "space junk" orbiting earth. that is 1000's of times more dense than the asteroid belt beyond Mars, or the even less dense Kuiper belt beyond neptune.

@@dustinherk8124 That's along the lines of my thinking about it.. the likelyhood is so small it's almost impossible + the idea of something that massive being pushed off course by something much smaller than it is even less possible. The only way that would be possible is if the smaller object happens to be more dense.. which is also extremely unlikely in the void of space. I appreciate your opinion and insight into my question 🙏

As DART mission has shown, in the case that Apophis _does_ pass through the critical "keyhole" leading to impacting Earth later, we have enough time and appropriate technology to nudge it enough to miss us again. It is small enough and passes close by often enough to make this not only possible, but (relatively) easy.

@@Morristown337 No. the trajectory is very well known, and the uncertainties in effects of Yarkovsky and YORP effects are too small to lead to the asteroid grazing the atmosphere. After that, though, new measurements will be needed. Hence those missions.

That's certainly an idea, but it would be incredibly unpredictable. You would have to paint one of it's rotational axis to have any hope of predicting where it would go. Then the force exerted from that painted side (or lack of force, depending on whether you where painting dark or light), would change its rotational axis over time. The amount of force the painting would cause would be variable, depending on the makeup of the asteroid, and off-gassing would likely remove at least some of the paint (which would be an argument for using reflective paint to reduce temperature). Then finally, it would depend on positioning relative to the sun, accounting for changes that we are making. I don't think we have accurate enough simulations, nor space spray painters, to make this happen with any accuracy, and the proximity of it's orbit to earth makes that a risky proposal. Just my opinion.

I wonder is heat type lasers would work in space. If so a lot of them together could warm, heat maybe cut or melt it idk im brain storming. I have been watching stuff about this astroid for about 3-4 years now and I had a feeling that it’s gunna happen by how close it’s gunna be after 2029 because it’s gunna change course from 2 things atleast. The earths gravitational pull when it passes and the yarkovsky effect. That makes double orbit expansion for the astroid putting perfectly in our path after the 2029 visit.

Imagine the chaos if they announced an impact location. People freaking out trying to get to the opposite side of the planet. My thinking is that it wouldn’t hurt for very long. Get me a case of beer and enjoy the view as it gets larger in the sky.

Airtag mission. Small tracking device? Cellphone converted, link to other devices (Bluetooth like) forming solar system link like network. Save on some gas and old phones at the same time.

@richardchildress9031, it curiously has the designation "99942", pretty easy to see 3 "6's" in there. I'm not superstitious but some people are, funny enough the date of it's expected "closest approach" is "Friday the 13th" in April 2029. The model shows it actually going in the opposite direction however from the video. The Earth spins counter-clockwise but the asteroid is shown to actually come in "clockwise" and it's said to be at it's very closest right over the Atlantic ocean which happens just before it begins to cross in "front of/over" the U.S." where it's said to be "not visible at that point due to the daylight." I don't have any info on the expected "time" of it's approach but if by chance it's "overnight", perhaps those of us in the Eastern U.S. might be able to catch a glimpse early morning at a far distance given it will still be above us by nearly the diameter of the Earth at the equator....

People havent mentioned that this big boy is 310 m wide. It wont be the result of mankinds extinction but it sure as hell will kick our asses. For reference the asteroid that no scoped the dino bros was 10-15 km wide :O

Thanks for pointing out the thing that I would expect most people wanted to know from this video! At 310m it's very roughly one fifth of the size of the asteroid that made the 23km wide Haughton crater on Devon Island, so it's not going to wipe out humanity but there will certainly be some fireworks and one hell of a hole! Obviously, the location it hits will set the parameters for the damage.

This asteroid might be smaller but if it were to land were you live, well, dead is dead. And the after effects of the impact will still go global. So even if it smaller, the outcome for the rest of the world would not be good.

Yeah but they claim, for some odd reason they still haven't been able to open the container to extract the asteroid sample. That's their own words for the past 2 months

I prefer Northern California Red to any other Red on Earth. Even French, so overblown a name. It's also very good, no questions about that, but the whole Mediterranean-Italy, Spain, Greece, Bulgaria, and I likely forgot a few more countries-grow excellent wines, too, and have a formidably ancient culture of consuming it. But NorCal is the GOAT wine country! California, from Central to Northern, is also in the Mediterranean climatic zone. Maybe it's because we have a cold Pacific, while they experience warm and wet Atlantic's breath? I dunno, but it's just better. (I'm not up to starting an argument about personal tastes, just sharing my POV). And, best of all, they're not mutually exclusive!!! Watching a launch on the 'Net with a tumbler of Cali Red to unwind after a long day is much, much better than watching the same launch with a glass of water!

Any computation of the orbit of such an asteroid takes into account, not only the effect of the Sun, the Earth and the Moon, but also all other planets, as well as a selection of larger asteroids. So, yes, the Moon affects its orbit, but that is already included in the calculations.

Other than mispronunciation of the name of the asteroid, the video was great.

Man, i cant seem to think that the entire worlds focused attention and firepower couldnt at least minimize the damage. At least change the outcome from instantaneous apocalypse to slow and drawn out nuclear winter.

Supposedly its not even gonna come close to earth. On a cosmic scale, sure its close. But in reality its like as if someone across the street threw a punch in your direction. There was no chance that was gonna hit you.

Yeah but that’s still pretty close when there are factors we don’t completely understand yet that will effect its approach, maybe not this next time, but what about in the next century? Again there’s a reason why they want to study this thing, some of the potential wildcard factors were mentioned in this video but some of them or not. That’s really close. Consider all of the other factors that could change very slightly the trajectory of this bullet, this is a potential problem in the relatively near future. Are the 2029 pass and the 2036 pass will be close enough that a strike sometime in the next century or two is rather likely. We can see the panic and the concern and the urgency for research missions, now imagine the parts they aren’t telling you.

We just need Killface to move us out of the way with the Annihilatrix.

Bro, for some reason, I feel like us tampering with Apophis is only going to increase its chances of impact. The maneuvers and landings mission can possibly change its trajectory. We've always had trial and error to understand things, but with space, it's different. We can't afford to make mistakes because one wrong move could create a domino effect.

Instead of measuring the asteroid, why not just cut it up into small parts and bring it all back to earth? You can study it way more, it isnt a danger anymore, and you get valuable resources

“Instead...“ - but how do you break it not knowing the size??? It makes no sense. Besides, “bring them to Earth” is an euphemism for “let them fall.” We don't have cosmic dump trucks for mountain-size “small part”. Nah, let's better knock the whole thing off course in one piece than deal with 100 fragments, each still dangerous, separately... Let's do the maths. Apophis' size is about 370m, and mass 60 million ton. If you've ever seen the Barringer Crater in the Diablo Canyon, Arizona, the impactor size was 30m. As you know, volume is proportional to the size in the 3rd power. 370m (360, to round up) is 12 times more. To cut Apophis to Barringer's impactor size chunks, you'll have to split it into 12³≈1700 pieces. For comparison, 30m is about the size of Boeing-777 (but incomparably heavier, 1/1700 of 60 Mton ≈ 35,000 ton.). We can't land these things softly. Falcon-9 booster dry mass is 25 ton, plus 3-9 ton of remaining reserve fuel at landing. 1000 times less, roughly, than a 1/1700 fragment of this asteroid. A big difference between Apophis and Barringer's is composition. Barringer's was extremely dense, consisting almost completely of iron and nickel. Apophis is a mix of stone, some Fe/Ni and a lot of primordial, probably loose detritus (remember how Bennu sampler “sunk” into the loose surface debris?). If it, heaven save, enters the atmosphere, it will disintegrate into dozens if not hundreds of pieces. The loose debris has a good chance of burning up and/or evaporating and condensing into smoke-like consistency. The stone part always cracks, because it contains water and other volatile liquid and frozen gases, which suddenly heat, boil and expand explosively, crack the stone into a myriad of fragments. Large ones are likely to reach the surface, or explode mid-air sending a huge destructive pressure wave, like a nuclear weapon, possibly much more powerful. The metal part tho would not disintegrate, and lose no more than half its mass by ablation (probably much less, given its size, as surface is proportional to size squared, and mass to size cubed: the bigger is the object, the smaller fraction of it ablates; ablation is the loss of molten or boiling metal from the surface). I'm not aware of estimates, but a county-sized area experiencing heavy rain of incandescent liquid iron drops is a good approximation, if the metal core hits the land. (One metal piece is the worst prediction: there may be multiple separate metal fragment within the metal+stone part of the asteroid, it is unknown). In any case, we'd be much better off pushing the thing away in one piece, if it heads toward landing on Earth, or leave it alone, if it's certainly on the trajectory to miss-space launches are much more expensive than Uber rides...

It was taken in calculation, along other effects we haven’t discovered yet , I believe.

Why can't we nudge it a small amount on this fly-by and thereby create a huge deviation (i.e. get it out of our way) on the next flyby?

I like how they said after its close encounter with earth then they will send out the satellite to study it. Thats alot of faith in believing it won't hit us. I understand that this little guy is traveling quite fast so that's probably why they have to wait for it to pass us first. It would take alot of fuel to turn around the satellite to catch up with it. But still I'm not really happy with the odds of it missing us.

That's not faith, it's knowledge it won't hit us. We've been observing the asteroid for years, and every observation improves our knowledge of its trajectory, which allows us to reduce the margin of error on calculations of its future trajectory.

@@nataliealice05 Sure, Earth has been hit before. But that doesn't matter. We can observe the asteroid, find out its trajectory, calculate where it will be the next time it comes near Earth and find out if it will hit us or not.

I believe we should try to develop a method of changing orbits to around the moon… where it could be mine for commercial applications.

I believe you! I was driving a few months ago in my truck and I looked in my driver's side mirror and seen somethings coming g down like a fire ball with trails, I was waiting for sound or something and Nothing happened, I noted the time it happened and went online to see if Anything came out of sky that day and time. I believe they already posted that it’s path will miss the 600 mile range to change the direction to impact in 2036. NASA said maybe in the future of about 100+ years. 2069 they ruled out on the main impact I believe.

Nice video! But, as someone who has watched the Stargate SG-1TV series multiple times, the pronunciation of Apophis here is driving me nuts! 😅 On the show they said it as "a-PAW-fuss", but I don't know if that's how ancient Egyptians said it.

I am not so bothered by the apocalyptic potential, as this guy constantly saying the big rock's name that way.! Maybe I'm totally wrong, but I have never heard that mythic creature's name said this way.! Also, there's other things involved in altering interstellar matter orbit potentials to take into consideration as well. Top of the list is..gravity of everything it passes as it travels. Of course, the seemingly bigger things, will be the things..that are likely to literally hit it..on to a slightly to very different path.

Well, I won't be alive in the year 2068 unless I can live to be 119 years old. Nice that scientists are analyzing asteroids and can figure out the possibilities of any impacts to Earth that could happen. Hopefully we are safe for the 2029 flyby of this asteroid which I should see what happens. There maybe other asteroids out there we are not aware of that could head for Earth. Need to also worry about the threats of Solar Flares from our sun that could play havoc with our Electricity grids. The Earth is very fragile from cosmic events. Thanks for the video.

How appropriate that _Osiris_ will inspect _Aphophis_ and inform our efforts to, should it be necessary, defeat it.

"is there cause for concern"... Well, if it's passing below the key holding grounds of satellites orbit, yeah, I would say that's a cause for concern! Anything, including the planet's gravity, could alter its course and pull it in.

This object must be whatched studied and if dan errous an attempt must be made to slow or accelorate it to miss earth? getting it to fall inwould towards the sun would be better as if pushed away it may fall back to the sun and earth and moon.
