Assassin's Creed Shadows Gameplay Trailer Breakdown: RT, 30FPS, Virtualised Geometry + More

Ойындар

Ubisoft Forward offered us our first chance to look at actual gameplay from Assassin's Creed Shadows, along with an initial taste of the latest revision of the series engine - presumably a new version of Anvil. Oliver Mackenzie breaks down the trailer, offering thoughts on the technological innovations Ubisoft delivers with the first next-gen only AC title.

    Something they seem to insist on is not updating the Horse / Mount Animations. It's less obvious here as the Horse has "Armour" on it but the Horse Animations look just as janky here as they have been for years

    @@alexdoan273 Personally I don't see that as an issue I'd rather be through doors as fast as possible especially in a game series like Assassin's Creed which the games are known to be pointlessly long if I'm being real honest (those games are more padded than an American football player). At most having an animation where he reaches for the door and it opening would be a good compromise cause animation short hand isn't a bad thing imo for instance the looting animation in the Last of Us 1 was just Joel reaching in the direction of an item and it automatically being put in your inventory yah it's not realistic but games need to strike a balance between realism and fun and sitting waiting for an animation to finish is not fun in a game that's hundreds of hours like an Assassin's Creed game.

    I think that in 5:28 it is not actually LOD pop-in, since I can't really see any visual changes. But it is rather physics being activated on those objects, the rigidbodies must be put to sleep by default until the camera/character reaches a certain distance. They might also be activated on direct hits from NPCs as well.

  • @kettenotter
    @kettenotter12 күн бұрын

    At 5:27 I don't think it's LOD popping. You can see that the object is moving a little bit after. I guess it's just a physics object which was in the wall and solved the intersection and/or the physics objects are only simulated near the player camera. So the jump was where it solved the intersection in the wall and after thst you can see the physics simulation settling.

    I don't know.. Ubisoft games still have that Ubisoft jank. The animations, lighting, faces, character models, stiff combat. Maybe a hot take, but I would really want them to improve their motion blur as it's basically invisible and it would greatly improve animation and camera fluidity. Edit: after slowing down the video I don't even see any motion blur... and the game is running at 30fps! That's madness. Edit2: Oliver mentioned that. Thank God. 🙂 Damn, Ubisoft.. You be soft. 😩

    Valhalla has per-object motion blur, so one would hope they've simply turned it off here for demo purposes. It really goes a long way in smoothing out jank, and god knows Ubisoft games could use some help covering that up. If not then that's both a very strange and bad ommision. SW Outlaws trailers seemed to lack this as well, although sadly that might just be due to Massive using an incredibly short shutter speed (the 'motion blur' option in Avatar FOP was a joke, you get like 4 pixels worth of blur).

With how forward looking Ubisoft has been regarding their PC ports i would be highly surprised if this was pc footage. The console version could use a simplified version of RTGI (less bounces or a switch to probe based). It would of been cool to see both console and pc use RT shadows since stealth and taking out lights has a big gameplay implication. I am glad to incremental improvements though and the animation work, at least in the cutscenes shown so far, looks like a step up. In particular when we got a close up of Yasuke speaking, the muscle and other face features moved more naturally than typical Anvil engine games. Also, there's something ridiculously satisfying about seeing the blade slice through the bamboos...I love the interactivity with the game world and honestly, while it's a small detail, it's probably why I'm buying the game. What is virtual geometry ?

  • @Mittzys

    @Mittzys

    12 күн бұрын

    Virtual Geometry is a somewhat new way that video games can render 3D Models. With traditional video game models, each object in the world actually has multiple models of different detail levels that swap in and out depending on how far from the camera they are. That way, the game can draw lower quality models for farther away things and not waste time adding detail that won't be seen. The downsides of this approach are that creation of lower level of detail models can be time consuming, and the computer has to process the entire model at once, even if most of it can't be seen. That means if you could see 1% of a character, the entire character has to be processed. A bit of a waste. With Virtual Geometry, developers only have to create one model. The computer can automatically add and remove parts of the model, creating a version of the model that looks the best from each angle. Additionally, It only has to process the parts of the model that are actually on screen.

    It's the successor of LOD. Instead of having a few precomputed LOD levels, the engine continuously adapts the rendered geometric (and texture) detail on the fly. This way you don't get any LOD pop-in and the artists can add extremely highly detailed assets to the game, because only visible details will be rendered.

    Keep in mind people that this is an early PS5 build, put together several months before the presentation recently. All the spotted issues or at least the majority, will most likely get fixed and polished before release. What I am however curious about is the PC version, as these always looked much better for AC titles than the console counterpart. Shadows, reflections, light rendering in general and pop-ins (LoDs) in particular. I wouldn't even be surprised, if the game features full RT, may even PT on PC.

    @@ttwinsturbo i feel its ps5 because it has the same popping distances of shadows and AO that the 30 fps mode had on valhalla also those glitchy shadows on cutscenes was something that happened on ps5 on valhalla but not on pc, and ubisoft 90% of the time shows the game running on consoles on the highest fidelity mode on the press coverage since the RPG games started to pop probably because the stupid amount of stutters their games have on pc

    Lighting looks worse than Tsushima which didn’t have RT at all. Once again, another aaa game using ray tracing in a way that barely matters but still has a greater impact on performance, those resources could be allocated to any number of other features that would be far more impactful to the presentation.

    AC Shadows looks amazing and The Flight's soundtrack sounds great. It might be the best Assassin's Creed game yet! It's like The Last Ninja 1, 2 and 3 x 110. Hope it comes to the Switch successor. A dream come true for Assassin's Creed fans. Can't wait to play it on PS5 Pro or Xbox Series X soon.

    The lack of extensive Physics in nearly EVERY modern game is such a disappointment... Seems gamers are more easily impressed by higher texture resolutions, and are happy just to see the environments LOOK sharper and more detailed, even though nothing moves. I just hoped that INTERACTION with the environments would have been more advanced by now, but even this game only bothers with limited 'physics' with things like the oranges, that doesn't even persist once they land on the ground. Don't gamers want to really FEEL like they're part of the world, and not just get a pretty mostly static backgrounds? Are accurate materials and lighting models really that impressive when a character's body parts still CLIP through world geometry?

  • 11 күн бұрын

    Yeah, tons of modern games have lot worse interactivity than Duke Nukem 3D, Half-Life 1 and 2 and many older games. Lots of games have small props as details around the world and they are just static, zero interaction. I know, these games' focus aren't on that, but that's always a neat little extra detail making the world more believable and realistic.

I'll start playing the latest FPS, but after a few minutes it just starts to feel basically the same as Call of Duty 2 that launched with the Xbox 360... Just been hoping for more innovation than just higher resolutions and more accurate lighting & shadows. It's definitely sad when HL2 featured more robust physics than anything in the past decade. VR was good for a while, but it seems things peaked with ALYX, and that was 4 years ago.

    If the game does not ship with 60fps on consoles, then I'll pass. There is nothing next-gen about 30fps. I don't care if the game needs to run at 1080p for 60fps, just please offer the players the option. We have seen so many great titles over the years, on the new consoles, offer incredible 60fps performance modes. Targeting 30fps is just moving backwards in terms of innovation, and it is not what gamers want. Gamers will always pick better fps over resolution, and that will never change. 60fps should be the new standard for every single game moving forward. In my opinion, to even show 30fps footage is just terrible marketing. It is not what gamers want to see.
