The reveal of Team Asobi's Astro Bot was the most exciting thing to come out of Sony's State of Play a few weeks back - and John's had the chance to go hands-on with an hour-long demo. Here's what he thinks of the game and why it's shaping up to be a very different, very exciting PlayStation game.

I have been a playstation owner since the PS1 day 1. I have had every console every gen day 1. Honestly for me I prefer the stuff they have been doing, with big set pieces, cool graphics, stories and worlds. There is a place for other types of games of course but the Uncharteds, God of wars, Horizon, Spiderman, the last of us that is prime playstation gaming for me.
The scale looks so much bigger than the first with those huge bosses, and those animations and graphics are so clean holy crap. Just amazing, reminds me of the first time I saw Mario 64 back in the day. I love the Astro Bot franchise so much.
I loved Astro’s Playroom. Can’t wait to try this one out.
This is a game that is 100% worth pre-ordering. As much as I love my Spiderman's/Uncharted's/God of War's, they simply cannot be the only type of exclusive present on the PS5, especially after what happened this year with the first party drought. Would love to get more variety like back in the PS2 days !
This is an instant buy for me, these developers are amazing, it is so rare to see a game not made by Nintendo to just focus on pure fun above all else and that should be celebrated❤
Astrobot is literally the only game I’ve played on PS5 and that alone has almost justified the system for me

If this game was developed on the switch, this would be considered a AAA high profile game. So excited for this one
This video is why I love John’s commentary. Digital foundry provides critical analysis of graphics technology, but the secondary task of evaluating games from the perspective of a consumer really fascinates me. John truly loves video games from a creative and fun oriented perspective and you can see in this video how much excitement this game has generated for him. Without this perspective, the games would simply be technology without a human element and thus there would be little reason to play them. I agree that physics based gameplay really introduces an aspect of novelty to the gameplay experience that makes the game world exciting and living. I am excited to play this game because it simply delivers on basic demands of what a fun video game should be. Spectacular visuals; fun, dynamic and interactive and haptic feedback gameplay, enjoyable music and sound design, and challenging puzzles. Videogames don’t all need to be complex narrative driven dramas with hyper realistic graphics. Both media can absolutely coexist in the same market space and thrive. Games like this have a timeless and universal appeal and will be remembered decades from now.
It’s so fun and colorful I can’t wait for this to experience 🔥🔥
