ASMR at the museum | Handling CHANEL jewellery | V&A

Ойын-сауық

// Listen with headphones for best experience //
Join Curator Connie Karol Burks as she carefully handles costume earrings, necklaces and brooches designed by Gabrielle Chanel.
Watch and listen as Connie examines the jewellery using a magnifying glass, picking out design features and colour schemes distinctive to the House of Chanel. Some of the pieces originally belonged to leading 1950s fashion model Anne Gunning, who would have paired these with accompanying CHANEL garments.
Close your eyes as you hear the delicate clink of chains and the soft snap of clasps, and imagine what the pieces would have felt like to wear.

    I love these videos SO much it's a chance to get up and close with gorgeous works of art AND a nice listening experience. Would these pieces have been acknowledged to be costume jewelry at the time or were the fake jewels intended to fool? I don't know much about jewelry so maybe it's a dumb question. I find the use of the glass paste method really gorgeous I don't even understand how that one necklace was made with the tiny bits of intricately shaped glass all over the place, it is so easy to enter the gaudy territory but somehow it looks gorgeous.

  • @juliadagnall5816

    @juliadagnall5816

    3 ай бұрын

    Most people would probably have realized that they were costume, if only from the size of the ‘gems’. Most modern gemstones are also cut with facets so that they’ll catch the light, although if you look at pictures of medieval jewelry made with polished rather than faceted stones some of them have a similar finish to the pieces shown here. With semiprecious stones telling real from fake can get a little trickier. Glass is about a 5.5 on the Moh’s scale, much softer than stones like topaz, garnet, or amethyst, but harder than pearls, corals, or amber. Either way the paste jewels are gorgeous with the added advantage that they would have been worn and enjoyed and they wouldn’t have had to be locked in a vault for their own protection.

    This is brilliant! I would suggest adjusting the sound in the future though. The spoken portions were too loud and I kept having to move the volume level up and down to hear all the details of the jewelry and unboxing, but then being “yelled at” when speaking began again. Perhaps, if you utilized more traditional ASMR vocal styles, such as whispering or soft spoken. Otherwise, it’s a cool idea for a museum to use ASMR for education.
