Chief Makoi is Da Man! He does however, bring out out one very important point -- so far we have not heard a single word from the pilots who were on board the Dali or from any member of the crew. They are the only ones who know what really happened and they've been gagged tighter than white on rice. So...all we can do is speculate on the cause of the blackout and the collision, until someone in the government breaks the news. How long will they keep us in suspense??

The best 2 things about being an Engineer and a conspiracy theorist is not having myocarditis and knowing this was a deliberate attack. The fact that the President himself declared this 100% an accident before 9am and before literally any investigation tells you all you need to know.

@oldgoat142 did you have those laundry dryers that have a steam/air heat exchanger? First time I saw one of those on a cruise ship blew my mind. Also, the "calendar" machine. Big contraption that would fold, press, and dry a pile of wet table cloths or bedsheets or napkins. Dang thing took electric, steam, and control air!

@CatFish107 As a matter of fact, we did. I worked on them for a short time, but mother, they were a mother to fool with. As for the calendar, (the ladies who worked it just called it the folding table), better make dang sure that thing was deenergized or you were going to pay with your fingers. A couple of old timers (back then that is) told me about witnessing that happening. Nasty story, but it made a big impression on this one-time kid.

In both of my sea tours I was a 'topsider' (Operations Dept) but took advantage of the opportunity to learn how things work in a gas turbine ship (scratching my curiosity bump) in my first ship and found it fascinating. Thanks for refering me to the two chiefs. As a professionl engineer, it is refreshing to hear the analysis from people that know the systems involved with control of the ship.. It is hard to believe that three diesel engines all died simultaniously due to a fuel issue. I'm leaning toward an issue with the electrical systems as evvidenced by the nav lights dark on the first restart and they were lit on the second. I don''t know about big computer controlled diesel engines but the engines on generators and construction equipment do smoke on start up. I have followed Chief Makoi for a long time and his presentation was excellent.

My Dad, having served both in the Naval Reserve on the Great Lakes before Engineering at Michigan and as a navigator in the Army Air Corps in WWI was sent by General Electric to the Navy in Long Beach when they converted from steam to electrical controls on their battleships. Problem was that with electrical controls there was no time lag and the Bridge did not fully grasp this.

Wow. This is probably very impotant since they were underway at 8kts when the first underway power outages occurred. The Dali crew needed to drop anchor quickly and slow down by dragging the sunk anchor along, before later restarting in reverse. It looks like the Dali ran out of "runway" and time before the allision. So many moving parts.

You got the right guy! Chief Makoi is where I learned about the care that goes into fueling, the processing, the preheating, filtering and fuel check sampling for contaminates, water, and chemistry. That's why I can't help thinking that IF the Dali shut down because of "bad fuel" or fuel filtration, then I SUSPECT they would be cutting corners or pencil whipping log books, etc. So the question would be, was the Dali a scow on a shoestring budget and on her last legs, or a highline operation that was just unlucky?

I was also waiting for Chief Makoi's video. Like you said the Dali is unlike any vessel we've been on. The Chief's comments on the effect of prop wash on the rudder included a handy video. It really shows the small size of the rudder, compared to the hull, on a large ship. It's so small that without the props effect it's next to useless.

Thanks for the analysis, from someone with the engineering/education/experience, to explain this event. It has been my suspicion from the first appearance of the 'black-smoke' that this disaster was 'fuel-related'. Of course, every action of the captain, chief-engineer, and crew will be scrutinized exhaustively, by every investigative authority. Their actions, post engine failure, will be throughly investigated. However, the electromechanical controls will also be scrutinized, by the best marine engineers. Knowing that these events are simulated, and trained for, in marine education is good, even if the outcomes are generally disasterous; "ships go bump in the night" ...and even in daylight. Separating fact from fiction is not easy in today's mass-communication environment, but it's nice to find someone with the truth. Thanks again🫡👍

Both "Steam man" and "Chief Makoi" are very informative and have interesting insights, however, I am not convinced as to what ultimately caused the ship (mouse in wheel😅 ) to turn towards the bridge column the last moment, but there are three distinct possibilities: 1) It was steered predominantly by prevailing natural currents of wind, water, and/or prop-walk (prop rotational inertia, and ship translational inertia), with the propulsion and rudder controls failed completely off, or partially operating (no, or very little, intentional active control/propulsive forces), where it was impossible to avoid the collision. 2) It was accidently steered into the bridge column, in part, due to either partial, or catastrophic failure(s) in the propulsion and/or rudder control system, causing confusion of control with the pilot(s), where it may have been possible to pass under the bridge without causing the collision, in other words, the ship turns into effectively a big sailboat. 3) It was intentionally steered into the bridge column, such as by manual hand control in the engine room (seemingly least probable as quite a show is put on with the black smoke and lights going on and off, though to hit the bridge, is an improbable event to begin with, hence, "All warfare is based on deception" -Sun Tzu) The easiest to diagnose probably is #1 (obvious loss of control), but harder to determine #2 (though maybe most probable), and maybe even more challenging would be #3 (least probable, though considering the state of war in the world and prior terrorists attacks against the US, decades ago, can not rule it out at this point).

I greatly appreciated your comment about how there's the "Deck Officers" and the "engineering officers" and how they need to work together. And almost always they do. Because their lives and the ship depend on co-operation. Many ocean shipping vessels have "single points of failure" -- like one diesel, one screw, one feeble backup diesel, if it starts. Whatever happened with Dali and the bridge, there's zero evidence so far that the crew, master, pilots, failed. For now, me (in Minnesota) we, here, need Baltimore port to get in service soon, no kidding, us Midwest lose money when Baltimore is out of service. My kid served on a US warship. There were backups to the backups, there were ways to hand-crank backups-backup thingies. Commercial ships, there's limited governance. Vulnerable bridges, many. Mostly, us humans, get along Okay. Never cross into the oncoming lane. But shit happens

Sal, what a terrific channel. I have been a subscriber for quite a while now. Thanks so much. One comment I would say in my humble experience, black smoke = heavy fuel. Yet Dali should have been operating on diesel in port. The investigation will come out in due course.

I hope they were not switching over fuel but there is no telling.

I was getting a special a the local bar, when on X I was advised that a ship doesn't lose steering when a ship loses power and lost it, becoming rather animated. Another person at the bar asked me where power and steering was lost and I said, "Seven Foot Knoll." That produced the look of terror on his face and he asked me, "Water in the fuel." I responded, "Lost wind, we were under sail." Another look of horror, "No engine?" "What we had wasn't going to work there." ""What did you do?" "Figured out what not to do to sink our ship or get us killed. Our faith got us trough." He had a power boat and a problem on a different area of the bay, and wished he has sails." What you say is true, but with navigation and steering, the principles of physics are the same and applies to all. The one thing I will not tolerate is disrespect to the crew and would love to hear their stories. I figure they had 5 to ten people working on the problem, as well their assistants. I figured everyone else on board was gearing up on fire fighting or damage control.

Love seeing the boating community coming together. Sad it's only over a tragedy but hopefully you all keep into contact and maybe collab on other stuff later.
