I suspect the armed personnel were not filipinos, perhaps africans, as the crew communicate with them in English. I hope they find the missing sailor from MV Tutor. I bet the crew are quite happy to be on an American aircraft carrier. Thank you Sal for your work.

The security team was hired to stop boardings. USV attacks are a different animal. They'll need port states to allow merchant ships to carry guns that can engage at a distance and destroy a small vessel. I say port states since a vessel so armed is not allowed most countries over gun control concerns. But as we see, the navies are not up to the job of keeping the sea lanes open. Probably more a political will rather than capability issue.

Problem here wasn't necessarily the security team. Rules of engagement will determine their actions. They're primarily there to deter pirates, not deal with USVs. Hopefully shipping companies learn from this and update their policies. Remember, noone wants to be that guy that shoots up an innocent civilian vessel. That was a local dhow made into a USV, so mariners get used to seeing them constantly, and seemed hesitant to engage. I spent a good bit of time in that area back in the 80s-90s US Navy doing boardings.

They said that they sent emails to companies under sanctions for not passing through That's the way. Seeing a lot of comments about the security team dropping the ball and I just want to add my two cents here. Those teams are only there to do one job and that mostly concerns defending the ship and the crew from being boarded by pirates. Their job boils down to either shooting at and deterring or eliminating small pirate skiffs before they board or having the crew lock down in a "citadel" and eliminating any boarders. They are not trained nor equipped to handle unmanned explosive craft from getting to the vessel, defending against these attacks is very much out of the scope of their job description and I dont blame them for the death of the mariner in this situation.

  • @jonjdoe

Have not been on a ship in the red sea in the past year so they may have amended the mission to defend against Houthi attacks but seeing as most of them have been anti ship ballistic missiles and the teams only usually have AR-15's it it unlikely. Most of not all ships with US mariners on them are going around Africa now so I doubt I will get to see if these missions are updated but I could reach out to a few friends who sail for Maersk as permanent employees if you'd like.

Those rifles are disposable if they need to be thrown overboard which are why they are basic without any accessories. Gaza's population has almost doubled since Israel withdrew and Hamas took over so how did Israel let that happen if the intent was genocide? A few things I noticed from the footage... 1) it sounds like the Captain wasn't on the bridge at the time of incident & leading up to it (as the Officer on the bridge is calling for the Captain to come to the bridge via the phone immediately after the hit). 2) The security team do not appear to have loaded weapons at any time prior to or after the incident (per the footage), as in several frames there is clear images of "no magazines fitted" to any of the weapons (which appear to be H&K / G3 style weapons, likely 7.62mm for range & stopping power). 3) On this last point, the security team should have at least gone to "load & Action" in their weapons state as the boat approached. & given the threat, & dare I say... fired warning shots. The warning shots in conjunction with a spotter with binos would have quickly determined that the fake boat crew were indeed fake (as no movement on the boat / skif). Thereafter the Officer in Charge on the bridge (or the security teams leader) should / could have ordered rounds be put into the outboard engine. Would have been handy if the security team had a DMR (rifle with scope to enable quick accurate shots to take out engines...or other key targets). A DMR would also enable hitting the boat/skif at a safe range from vessel. 4) Further to #3, is better to take out a threat at a safe distance. If the security team were only there to stop attackers once they were on board, then they've given away most of their advantage & that is a potentially losing plan. The ship has the initial advantage if using marksman with DMR's or even just good shooters with iron sights as the cargo ship.is a much stabbler platform, & they have the advantage of high ground & a degree of protection that the boat/skiff does not. ...Above is my opinions anyway.

You would have thought that with the damage this is doing to world trade - cost and time wise, the naval power of countries affected would come together on this in a much bigger way. This shows the folly of countries like my own, the UK, who have constantly cut back on the amount of naval ships operated. You never know when they will be needed.

If you want to go back in history, look for cultural and ethnic maps of the Middle East. They barely align with the modern country borders. The problem is that most of this area used to be European colonies or part of the Ottoman Empire. The Ottomans were on the losing side of WWI. The victorious European powers carved it up rather haphazardly along the borders we have today, with little to no input from the people who lived there. (Europeans hate when I point this out, because they prefer to believe it's all the fault of the U.S. and its appetite for oil.) That's why Iraq and Afghanistan lack any cohesiveness (multiple ethnic groups who mostly hate each other). Why there's constant strife in Syria. Why Turkey acts like a schizophrenic a*hole. etc. The region would be much more stable if we could do a reset and simply redraw the borders of the countries there. But politics and the presence of strategic resources (oil, Suez, etc) make that impossible, unless it's forced upon them (i.e. someone conquers the entire region and redraws the map).

I used to work at Central Command. When you go to work there, you learn that one of the prime reasons for this command's existence is to keep the Global Commons open. The command also understands that threats from Islamic militants are the most major problem in the region. The command was commissioned in response to such threats in the early 1980s. We know what is going on with shipping. I'd like to know what is going on with Central Command. Our response seems to lack a robust sense of purpose.

The houthis have been on point with their intelligence. They have not targeted a ship that didn’t enter the port of Israel or was owned by an Israeli. They then extended the warning to all ships that belong to or deal with the countries that are attacking them so do the math.

Lot of people ragging on a Security team not illegally carrying the kind of weaponry required to sink a small boat. They were there to stop boarding/to act as a deterrent and their nationality is completely unimportant in this context. Also it has to be said, gun safety people, gun safety. He had the magazine separate from the gun then loaded it which is the correct thing to do in a salt water environment, boarding parties don't transport in like they are in Star Trek, he had time.

“No one wants war.” Any sane person would heartily agree! However our govt with their neo con/neo liberal mindset appears hell bent on instigating conflicts all over the world. The inability to come to grips with a multi polar world could be the death of all of us. On another matter the Russian sailors in Havana must have been shitting themselves when the Canadian vessel was berthed nearby😅

Is that what you think? (genuinely curious) I would say a lot of this is happening because the Biden administration is devoted to NOT getting involved in military actions, especially in the Middle East. Obama was the same way - its hesitancy borne out of political ideology and domestic goals, not will. The (Houthis/Iranians/etc) see that/read that reaction and are seeing how far they can go without more than carefully-metered slaps back.

I suggest that the response of the bridge crew could have been proactive, as opposed to apparently non-reactive. I saw no sign whatsoever that the crew undertook evasive maneovers such as helm hard over to starboard , that is away from the attacking boat. The crew seemed clueless to this possibility. Also even after the guards made the observation that there was no live pilot on the attacking boat none of them seemed to make any attempt to disable it with sustained rifle fire. It seemed to be a pathetic response by everyone on the bridge.
