    I've just spent 3 days watching videos on rigid heddle weaving so I can help my teenage daughter, who has decided she wants to learn this [I'm just a poor humble knitter - I don't even crochet!!] This is by far the very best tutorial on youtube. Not only do you cover everything is a very clear manner - but you also do so in a very efficient manner without a lot of distracting filler and/or detail that beginners don't need. I don't mean to be harsh on the very kind people who have given of their time and knowledge to also prepare and post tutorials - thank goodness for such kind people. But you seem to have a unique talent for being interesting, informative, and also to the point.

    Just bought the Ashford 48". I am also building a crude loom with foot pulleys for my mom! After we bought it, I started seeing people say that it was not practical. I dont know why, if I cant move it I wouldn't buy it. It's not immovable and only a foot longer than the 36... I'm hoping I love it! If I do not, I will modify him into floorloom-hood!!! His name will be theseus, he will be my little Franken loom

And thanks to you and so many other great tutorials it is coming along great so far. I waxed and put it together yesterday, I am making a dish cloth as I will get more use out of it then a scarf as I live in Phoenix AZ. Love the colors in your home spun yarn. I would never have chosen that burgundy for the weft as I would have though it would cover off your warp but it turned out so beautifully! Thank you again!! You time is very much appreciated.

I contacted Virginia Glenn of the Arizona Weavers and Spinners Guild to see what she would recommend and asked if any of them would like to meet up and spin in the park. She also gave me a couple of other ideas. I'll be visiting Tempe Yarn and Fiber. Do you have anything to recommend? I plan on doing some hiking while I"m there too. All the best. ~Shiree

I have a few drop spindles but haven’t used them much. Be careful on your hike and take plenty of water. Please let someone know where you plan on hiking and when you expect to be back. If you hand hem it at the beginning and end of the weaving, you won't have to worry about the weft coming out, and after it's off the loom you can twist or knot the warp ends or do any other embellishing, it's easier to hem it when it's still on the loom with the tension on it. Thank you for sharing, I learnt something from you. Cheers!

    @@rehashfiber knots are nice and tidy too, hemming just gives that added security so that nothing frays. Your weaving looked great, and you used fun colours, and the different stripping of warp threads came up lovely. Also, when you're winding your warp on, tie a bit of sturdy string or twine around a brick or something heavy, the tie the other end of the string around the loop of your warp where it comes off the peg, then wind your warp on. This way you don't lose the tension on the warp Yarns, and you don't have to push your table, I use this way because I don't usually have anyone else around to help with the winding on of the warp. Doing this will also help with your edges, because it's usually the edges that go slack easier and you might see a difference in your shed, because good tension allows for a wider shed to open up. I hope you don't mind me sharing a bit of my process of warping, it's wonderful watching people as they master new skills. I also spin my own yarn, but at the moment I'm spinning finer than I usually do as I'm making a cardigan for a friend, but the fine spinning is driving me nuts! Although I prefer to weave with finer yarn, I prefer to knit with chunkier yarn. Once again thank you for sharing your video and I look forward to the next one. Cheers from Tasmania!

    Can you explain what you mean by "hand hem"?

  • @howlingwind1937

    @howlingwind1937

    Жыл бұрын

    @@froggydoodle808 at the beginning of your weaving once you've got a few inches done, but before you roll it on towards you, you can hem the edge. I usually pick the same colour yarn that the warp is in, but you can use any of the colours you're working with, and thread a good length if it onto a darning needle. Then I poke it down through some of the little loops made by your weft at the selvedge, that way the tail is hidden. Then I count across 2 warp threads, and up 2 weft threads and poke the needle up between the threads, then bring the needle and thread down to the first warp thread go over and under that and count 2 warp threads and up 2 weft threads and carry on doing that across your weaving to the end, and then hide your tail in the selvedge, and repeat at the other end before you take it off the loom. Hmmm this may not have explained it very well, I'll try to find a video for you that can show you. Im sorry this probably wasn't very helpful. OK I found 3 videos that might explain it better, look on KZread for the woolery for hem stitch, fibers and design and Kelly cassinova, they're all a bit different, but just puck the one that feels the best for you, my poor instruction is just one way that it can be done and that was shown to me by my mum, I hope all this isn't too confusing. Cheers!

    I just started watching this tutorial, and I had to stop to compliment you on your delivery. You do have the advantage of having a very clear voice. In addition, you speak slowly and distinctly. Giving us your words in print seems like overkill, but it comes in handy if we want to watch in a place where we can't have the speaker on and we don't have earbuds. Thank you so much, and keep up the good work.

    @@rehashfiber I also didn't know that one can use colours in the warp threads. Every other video I've watched demonstrates a white warp set up with colour in the weft threads only. As you can tell, I'm just getting my toes wet with the concepts of weaving. You video is the clearest I've encountered.

    I really enjoyed your tutorial, I have done a few pieces of weaving, I found it interesting you use the carboard strips at your weaving end, most weavers I know use all 10 or 12 strips at the end where you put your brown paper, I have used brown paper at the weaving end to protect my work. I loved your colourway of your scarf !

    Question: 1). How much weft is it possible to load on this loom, so more than one (of similar) project can be made without having to dress her for each separate project? 2) Are there any additional attachments that can be purchased for this loom other than a stand? 3). Can boat shuttles be used with this loom? Thank you very much for showing that homespun can be used to weave with. I’ve watched countless videos in the last week and only yours shows and discusses using homespun fibres. I was actually going to pass up weaving because it looked as though only purchased cone fibres were all that could be used, and I wanted to use my own spun fibres. So thank you for showing how to use homespun! You really have a wonderful way of teaching and explaining things. 🙂 Thank you 🙏

    Wow, good question. I've never loaded up more than one project so I don't know. However warping the loom only seemed hard and long the first time I did it. Now iI can warp it in less than two hours and projects are usually complete within a week. So over all it feels like a fast way to complete a nice item compared to the months it takes for some knitting projects I do. ~Shiree
