Comparing the 3 styles of Ashford Rigid Heddle Loom

A video comparing and contrasting the three styles of Ashford Rigid Heddle Loom. All opinions are my own, of course. I remember looking for a video like this when I was first choosing what loom to buy (before my loom acquisition got out of control...) Anyway. My thoughts.

Girl, if I could afford a "vacation" house, let alone a regular house, I'd have a 48" loom in BOTH! 😂 Thank you for this video 🙏🏾

This was exactly what I needed to watch before investing in my first loom. Thank you!

We saved & saved & saved and finally bought the new style stand for our 32 in. heddle loom, waited for deliver nearly 3 weeks because of COVID and Ashford being so busy but so thankful to have it. Still a beast in the living room but at least it tilts to nearly a straight up position giving the perception of taking up less space.

I bought a Sampleit because I didn’t know if I would like weaving. Also with back issues I wanted to be able to weave standing up so I have it on my kitchen counter.

I just asked this question in the weaving group this morning, wish I had seen this first. Think I will be saving up for the knitters loom!

I feel you can sample on a standard big loom. You don't beat with the heddle, you use a little inkle loom shuttle and beat with that. You only warp up the bare minimum front to back and so never advance. I get a few coasters out of that and it's enough to show me what the project will be like. I then use some math to compare draw in and shrinkage.

The knitters loom looks like my ridged heddle loom. What is the difference? My Asford Ridged Heddle loom is at least 10 years old. Used once

I’d like to get a class set of ashford looms to teach beginners. I like the portability factor of the knitters loom and the fact that it seems nice to work between the table and your lap. Are there other issues to consider using the knitters to teach beginners. I feel like the weaving space of the sampleit would make the experience not as pleasant. I also intend on using knitting yarns mostly in warp and weft. Mostly, I want to create and easy pleasant experience for the participants. My workshop is less about learning to weave and more about having a creative experience.

It can be a bit harder to warp, but mainly if you are use to other looms. The main thing is probably the cost factor. My opinion, of course, but I find the knitters loom one of the most comfortable to weave at a table with. That said, if you get some laptop tables or tv dinner trays, the 10” sample it works very nicely and would be a cheaper buy. The 12” knitters is more portable, though. What fun, in any case! Sounds like a fun course to take and to teach.

@@tabbywoven7941 thanks. So if they aren’t going to be warping the loom then the weaving experience sounds like it would be best with the knitters loom. do you have a website? I’m in Canada so it doesn’t likely make sense to buy from you. I was hoping to get a quantity discount but the Canadian retailers say that there’s no such opportunity.

I actually don’t sell the looms (but you did put an idea in my head!) I have a “collection” of looms because we were testing what we do sell (the Tabby Jack) and wanted to make sure it was as close to universal as possible. I also have a collection of looms for personal use and the hopes to give classes (I was hampered by covid protocols but hope to start up classes soon :) Anyways, I’m not sure who good distributors are in Canada but you can reach out to Ashford directly and they should be able to give you a list (or perhaps a discount for buying in bulk?)

@@tabbywoven7941 Thanks for your reply. I have a 24” Ashford but I’m looking for something portable to take to knit groups. Do you have to rest the Knitters loom on a table or can you use it on your knee?

You do have to prop the knitters loom on a table or use a stand. It won’t work on your lap along. For your purpose you may like a 16 or 10” sampleit loom. They are great for lap work.
