Artisanal and Small and Small Scale Gold Mining (ASGM) is the world’s largest source of global mercury emissions to the atmosphere. ASGM is an important source of income and an opportunity for rural development. The Minamata Convention on Mercury aims to protect human health and the environment from mercury pollution.Under the Convention, many countries are required to develop and implement a National Action Plan, or NAP, to reduce and eventually eliminate the use of mercury in ASGM.
The video presents the four worst practices in ASGM. According to the Minamata Convention on Mercury, the countries should aim to eliminate them. The video also presents a set of better practices that can be applied instead in order to reduce the use of mercury in ASGM. Finally it recommends the mercury-free practices and enabling conditions that are necessary to eliminate entirely the use of mercury in the sector.
