I believe it's called bismuth: The bismuth ,acts as a refining agent to the gold. This bismuth slag is broken up, re-fused with a little metallic bismuth, and is so freed from the last trace of gold which is collected by the bismuth, and subsequently extracted.

Hearing "more expensive" thinking "less profit" hear "engage formally in the economy" thinking "way for the govt. to scum their 'share' for nothing"
Thats disgusting
Why dont they retort it? A retort is simple and cheap to build and then you get the mercury back as well!
Centrifuge? Rig up an old washing machine!
