As traffic deaths hit record high, Washington residents seek public transit for safer commute

Washington State recorded its highest number of traffic deaths in 33 years in 2023.
Preliminary data from the Washington Traffic Safety Commission (WTSC) indicates that there were 810 traffic fatalities last year, a 10% increase from 2022.
The WTSC found that more pedestrians (157) and motorcyclists (141) were killed on roadways than in any previous year on record.
“810 is not just a shocking statistic," said Shelly Baldwin, WTSC director. "Every number represents a life lost. A lost family member. A lost co-worker. A lost friend. The people who mourn have had their lives changed forever. I hold them in my heart as I ask drivers to take the actions we know save lives. Drive sober. Be patient. Stay focused. Buckle up.”

Someone just got stabbed in Capitol Hill LR station. I'll take my chances on my safer car than the war zone that is public transit

So, actually Ramon wasnt paying attention, not looking further then the car ahead, not keeping a distance between his car and the car in front of him, and obviously the truck behind him failed to do the same. Also, why journalists always have to present this with such a drama in their voice.

I thought I was the only one doing this. I’m so glad other people are looking a couple cars ahead and not just trusting the car in front of them.

Ramon can't drive his way out of a paper bag with both ends open and now he has a driving phobia, should be the actual headline.

@@NickCBax nah...the last statistic given about "light rail trail collisions" deaths to "roadway" deaths is a false equivalency and bad reporting. typically this would be roadway accidents per mile travelled vs same on transit.

@@NickCBax local news is just crap so many places in the us. scary bad. that moron george santos could easily have happened in washington. sad thing is so many don't listen critically to what's presented to ask questions (not just about political leanings), but usually about data upon which decisions are made.

Perhaps Washingtonians should learn how to drive properly because they don’t at present. Driving out there feels like being in Mad Max.

If you can walk to a light rail station it will save you so much time and stress. **Lightrail rider walk to lightrail station. Not operation due to maintenance / stabbing / sound transit special day off ** Great. Great

This video was a whack excuse to push the light rail. Y’all want to recoup all the money we have already paid to get more activity on the new stations. Using this man story! The economy is so bad right now people are barely making ends meet rn. NASTY WORK!

They would make more money back of they put fare gates at the stations like most other public transit systems. But asking people to pay apparently is offensive
