You may be worried about what you can add to synth reviews but this is the one that tipped me over the edge and got me to order the Polybrute. I had read every review and watched all the online reviews and demos (Loopop, Alex Ball, Bobeats, SonicState etc.) and I knew I liked the Polybrute. But there is a difference between liking the free one Atruria sent you to demo for a couple of days and paying for and using regularly, your own Polybrute. So don't worry that others have done it first, wait a while and tell us what you like or don't about the things you have used in real life for a while.

Really an excellent format and way of reviewing an instrument and especially a synth. Happy Birthday Mister.

I’ve had my Polybrute for 4 months now and I’ve used it everyday. I’m into 80’s style big fat analog sounds and was initially underwhelmed by the factory patches. My impression changed completely when I started reproducing famous Juno, Jupiter8 and OB Xa patches. First I saw how flexible the Polybrute’s architecture is, it’s really easy to configure the Polybrute to mimic most famous polysynths of the 80s. Of course the resulting patches didn’t sound exactly like the original but they were remarkably similar and most of the time I’ve been able to make them sound even better while keeping the concept intact. The Polybrute has its own sound so if you are after a really specific vintage synth sound, you might want to just buy the vintage synth you are after but if you like vintage synths but you want to know what would have been possible if synths companies didn’t go all digital in the 90s, I think the Polybrute sounds like a logical evolution of the big analog polysynths of the 80s.

Said it perfectly. I've only demo'd the PB (going to own it myself soon, though) but it's clear that the presets seem to show a tiny slice of what this thing can do. When you dive into it and actually recreate sounds it's easy to see how it still does the basic huge analog sounds too, it's just that it may seem less obvious on a device with this level of complexity.

Your videos are great, you spend too much time worrying about what other KZreadrs are doing. I dig your grounded attitude and appreciate the 10-15 minute format. I'd like to see some videos where you go into detail about something specific, maybe focus on some sound design or breaking down a specific patch. The GAD therapy with reviews and comparisons are fun and useful but if you could teach me stuff also that would be good too.

You are awesome. I love your perspective. You offer something the other guys just don’t have. Your videos open a different world for me. Thank you. Please keep going.

I've had one opportunity to use the Polybrute, at the Guitar Center in San Fransisco. I fell in love instantly and now it's my dream synth. Im still new to the synth world, but the amount I was able to figure out with just and hour and a half of time really shows how well the interface was designed.

You seem like an honest gear lover and I trust your opinions. Everyone has their own decisions to make but giving us an insight after 4 months was really helpful for me. Thank you.

Excellent review and I like your conversational approach. I think you nailed the "do I need?" topic. So many people (myself included in earlier days) feel a particular synth will make or break their sound, when the reality is exactly what you said; learn what you have. I'm guilty of acquiring synths and only learning 10% of their actual functions, etc. I suppose I should just dig out my Access Virus C from storage, or finally learn my Waldorf Blofeld before I even consider such an expense. Great review.

Thank you for the very interesting thoughts. I have to say I totally agree with your final point echoing Benn Jordan's...it's such a consuming creative tactile almost meditative experience to play, if there is such a thing as music for the soul then this is a Synth for the soul. I'm loving my journey with the Polybrute. Very much a novice but I have already started designing patches thanks to its easy-to-use interface and the Polybrute Connect makes it so easy to organize. And there is no telling where each session will take me creatively, I'm totally addicted to the auto-generate patch function as a starting point too

Thank you for sharing. Once I get back into sound design, Polybrute will be one of the synths I will consider. At the moment I just want to finish songs with the limitations I have organised with my current gear.

I have owned and played many great synths since the 70's and regretted passing some on (Synthex, JP8, System 100's, various Moogs, the lovely Cs30, etc. etc) but the Polybrute gives me such a feel and flavour all of those and many more that I no longer miss them. I still have a fairly large collection and many vsti versions, but this thing sort of brings them all together (analog at least) and has become a really playable instrument in its own right. Wonderful piece of engineering and an actual instrument. I hope to take it on tour in the near future.

My friend....I own one synth which is a Moog Sub 37 and want to add an polyphonic synth to my home studio. The Polybrute keeps calling me yet I know there as so many synths in the $3000 range. Do you think pairing the polybrute with the moog makes a good combo. I ask only because you have played all the great synths and respect seasoned musicians opinion. Thanks

@@director2bob it depends upon whether you just want to expand your analog synth pallette or whether you would like to add a different flavour such as fm/sample/wave table or other engine. The Polybrute is great, but it duplicates a lot of ground with the sub 37. Try spending as much time with as many types of synth you can (including the Polybrute). There are so many synths, it's impossible to know what suits your musical genres.

As an original Jupiter 8 owner myself it's very interesting hearing your opinion. Up till now I've really fancied the Hydrasynth Deluxe to fill the hole left by the JP8. But this synth looks like real contender to be studio synth. 😎

I'd say you are pretty much spot on. I've had my PolyBrute for a few months now, and it has dominated all my synth time since. It really is a monster of a synth wrapped in an inspiring and intuitive interface, and it has a sound all it's own. Most people might think it's just a polyphonic MatrixBrute, but as an owner of both, it is MUCH more than that. Though they share the fundamental building blocks, the OSC and filter section is actually configured quite differently between the two, with the PolyBrute's configuration lending itself more to the morphing functionality.

Duuuuuuuude!! On the verge of buying it after days of R&D, then I see your video. Didn't know if you were going to outright crap on it until 4:30+ mins...you totally had me; the 5 year-old in me watching a horror movie behind the blanket came out initially. Well played. If there’s a GAS killing synth for me, this is it. It’s a rare feat to have a synth that is extraordinarily complex and extraordinarily easy to use. In fact, it might be the only synth that has ever done it. And not only does it sound great, it has its own character. Sometime it’s hard to believe that you are only working with saw, square, triangle and sine waves because it so effortlessly synthesizes acoustic and electro mechanical instruments, and that inspires so much creativity in me. It makes the sound in my head, and that is my ultimate compliment.

Like many others in the comment, I really enjoy listening to your opinions. For this video I do wish you ‘d added some more polybrute playing because it is always nice to not just talk about synths but also demonstrate some of the sounds you really like.

Great video with a nice twist woven into the beginning... One first thinks, uh oh... he found more than just a hair in the soup, perhaps a whole wig... And then watchers are GASsed up to the max :o) Brilliant! There's no denying that the PolyBrute deserves 1st place for the ultimate synth of 2021. I love mine and I'll keep it until I kick the bucket. I also totally agree on what you said about the knobs. Only thing I dislike about the Polybrute is the fact that it basically made my beloved Summit redundant... I’ll have to find good reasons for keeping my Summit, real good ones! But on the other hand resisting this gorgeous thing is very hard to do, Matrix brute did that to me and I love it , I'm afraid Poly will get me in the end too ...... thx for a down to earth review A+

I'm also a midlifer - I'm an electronics engineer and a radio amateur so I get modulation, so the control surface isn't an issue. I can't play at the moment and have my first piano lesson on Monday and I'm hoping this bad boy lands on my desk before the weekend. I've been a life-long Ultravox fan and love the sound of analogue synths. I've been tied up with UK politics for the last 6 years and need a release - I've built a few other projects during lockdown such as a satellite groundstation, digital radio repeater and a time sensitive network based on a grand master GNSS clock, but this fills me with glee. Wish me luck :)

Great review! I've had my PolyBrute for 3 months now and I couldn't be happier with my choice. I wanted a poly synth to go with my Moog Grandmother: first I bought the Behringer Poly D - couldn't gel with it and hated the flimsy keyboard, sent it back; increased the budget a bit and got a Modal Cobalt 8x - amazing keybed and sounded really nice but it didn't feel enjoyabld to use so returned it; then I realised I had to actually get my hands on these things and try them so I drove to a shop near London, played a bunch, narrowed it down to the Rev2 and the PolyBrute and the PolyBrute won. It sounds incredible and is a joy to use! The Cobalt also sounded really good and is amazing value (I really miss that Fatar keybed!) but it didn't feel like a musical instrument; the PolyBrute definitely feels like a musical instrument. And compared to the price of other instruments (like guitars) spending that amount of money to get a top of the line instrument isn't too bad (still bloody expensive tho!)

great review, just a little correction. The Nord series synths have had morphing between parameter settings or different sounds since the 90s.

Hi! Thanks for watching my friend! I’ve played a few nords and yes, the morphing is insane! But those are virtual analog (digital) and I meant morphing on analog synths. At least I can’t think of any other analog synth that can do straight morphing like this (like really blending and not layering or multitimbral). Would you agree? Cheers!

I have it. I love it.. if I could have had any thing more from it, I would have liked at least 8 voice polyphony instead of 6.. but for my use cases, I really don’t hit that limitation often..

I relate to the sentiment! But just like you, I rarely have a problem with the 6 voices, especially if I start looping on the octatrack or deluge or using a delay pedal. 8 or 10 voices would’ve been nice, but maybe would’ve gone into moog one territory price wise, which would mean I wouldn’t have been able to buy it. Still, what an amazing 6 voices!!

Totally agree - 100% wish they had an external audio input - shoot the NTS-1 has one, it would’ve been such a nice compliment to other brute models to utilize the Polybrute filters and effects - other than that though - I’ve found it’s absolutely a synth worthy of the time required to learn and master it (plus Arturia’s tutorial videos are top notch) - if anyone’s ready to make the plunge into a flagship synth - this one is ABSOLUTELY worth consideration. Great vid - thanks!

In the end I felt like watching a life-insurance commercial :) Great review. It's nice to hear that my effort for saving up to 2500€ is still worth it.

As much as I love Loopop with his proficiency, his mastery makes using equipment look easy to do. So you have an attack of GAS and buy it, only to find you're unable to achieve the sort of sound out of it Loopop can and are left feeling disappointed. Who among us is a Loopop? Arguably watching someone with above average talent achieve tremendous results would be a more appropriate reviewer of gear than a virtuoso? Great review TMS for exactly that reason.

@apislapis - totally agree! I feel completely overwhelmed often when watching Loopop's videos - I get stressed and sometimes even the impression that I am a total loser or a fake as I most likely will never reach his level of proficiency, let alone Mr. Shoebridge who freaks me out with his dry, complex and dead serious approach. His (undoubtedly super professional) videos to me feel like watching your no-fun, old school math, chemistry or physics war veteran teacher showing you how to use any particular synth... What fun! :o( This is why I like the Midlife Synthesist videos sooooo much!!!! All of a sudden there is fun, a calm and authentic person giving you some valuable advice in a relaxed "Cafe talk amongst friends" manner, no stress, no pressure... Just pure synth talk and sound demo with some essential and very valuable facts carefully woven into the fabrics of each video. Honestly, I love our Midlife Synthesist to bits and am very proud and happy to have him as a friend!

@@modgrip805 So with the recent spate of Modwave reviews, I went to MylarMelodies first, because I know he’s just gonna play some insane amazing stuff. Then I go to BoBeats for his gentle first impressions as if you were switching on and playing for the first time. I might follow up with Nick Batt’s take. I will often leave Loopop’s video last. Why? Well he goes into so much depth that it can be a bit much sometimes, so I will hold for awhile and stick him in Watch Later when I have time to have processed all that I have watched so far. This time I noticed his video was over an hour (!) long, so it is probably best to wait until I can commit my undivided attention…

@@modgrip805 Yeah, Loopop generally makes a reference manual in video form, and he approaches most of it like an engineer rather than a musician. So the examples are ... more functional than aesthetic. Additionally, he often focuses on unusual corner cases, making instruments do things outside of what they're really good at... which is kind of neat but not representative of regular use. So I find his videos useful mostly just for an overview of specs and features. If I want to see what the instrument can do in the hands of a talented musician, I look for demos from other people, like Red Means Recording. And if I want to get a feel for how the instrument would sound in _my_ studio, I look for youtubers who are only mediocre at music, whose skills are approximately the same level as mine.

I really like your channel! You seem to find interresting and personal views on the subjects you speak about. So, thank you! About the Polybrute, I was kind of hoping that you would not be this positive ;-) It was long ago since a synth gave me this amount of ”I-really-want-this”-feelings. So I guess I have to find something so sell so I can buy this… I really NEED it on my next release! (I hope my wife did not hear that…)

Wonderful! Usually i don't like synth reviews with a lot of talking, but the way you do it is fine with me! Doesn't sound like an advertisement, but like one synthesizer guy talking to another. All relevant information, presented in a natural and relaxed way. i don't think i'll buy this particular synth anytime soon, but that is because i already have and use a lot of synths. i think it is one of the more interesting synth's of this moment. Yes, it is pricey when you consider what's available on the low-end. On the other hand if you want or need this type of quality, user interface, ingenuity etc. it is the price to pay. Really enjoyed this video. Mr. Midlife synth, you've got your self an old timer as new subcriber!

What a great testimony, it would have tipped me o ver the edged if I hadn't already bought the Polybrute. I'm a retired sound engineer, I spent many years on the road with bands, but had to give it up and change paths. This has brought me into having a studio and making my own sonic world. When I first heard the MatrixBrute, I had to have it and when the PolyBrute came out, I hardly needed to be convinced that a polyphonic version was going to be out of this world. There have been many mornings that the sun has come up and I have been in the studio all night long. So, yes I agree with everything you say, especially the ability to route exterior sound sources through it to get the (outrageous, incredible and beautiful) onboard FX. There is something that you didn't mention that really is worth the time of day, and that is that Arturia have really gone a step up with the software controller. That is the one thing that's really missing from the MatrixBrute and they really have done some brilliant work now. The PolyBrute Connect is awesome, so easy to use and implement into the DAW, not to mention save all new sounds in a really easy way.

I love your approach to this review video. Have you done an update to this video that talks about the Polybrute 2.0 software update? If not would you consider doing one? Thanks!

Love the real, down to earth, GAS prevention videos you make. But still, I'm considering trading in the Matriarch for this thing as a solo synth...

Stay the way you are. You’re asking the questions I’d like to hear the answers to without having to buy that thing. Other may not say what scares possible advertisers.

I got my PolyBrute a couple months ago. It has been worth the price so far and I have only barely scratched the surface of what it can do.

As a newly PB owner I can say without a doubt, It's worth every cent!

The entire original purpose of KZread was for people like YOU to give YOUR take on things. We live in a world where it feels like everyone's already said or done everything we want to say or do. The thing is, what YOU say, when you say it might be the very way someone else needed to hear it, when they were looking for it. You might be the one to reach someone where no one else could. So, even though it might feel like it's all been said or done before at times, that's no reason not to say or do things. Especially if you're saying and doing them on a service like KZread, because this service is about YOU. And me, and everyone else, but it's also very importantly about YOU, brotherman. I love your videos, don't ever feel shy about putting something out after anyone, your way of making videos reaches me in a very special and sincere way, and for that, I love your stuff. Thank you for another awesome presentation.

I have to tell you that the Matriarch is absolutely worth it. I’m not an expert but I get lost in it every time I sit down to play it. It always sound interesting and amazing and I don’t get lost in presets. Highly recommended.

@@final_mile_music9713 @Loafer69 Keysndrums For sure! I'd call it "expensive," but definitely not "overpriced." For me, it's really just that my analog synth needs are currently covered by a Prologue 8 and MG-1, and I tend to use grooveboxes and my old Casio synth more than anything else. But it's on my list of synths to someday get!

Good review, I think my only niggle with the Polybrute is FX 3 Chorus Phaser Flanger. It would be nice to have a more in-depth control, but apart from that, the Polybrute capable of sounds which you are never going to find anywhere else. It sounds very organic, and alive! Do I miss my Matrixbrute?...No not at all, the Polybrute takes synthesis to a whole new level. I was going to go for the Novation Summit, but I am so glad I did not.

Wish they would come out with a Desktop model!

How is the integration with the V Collection 9 and also Arturia software such as Pigments or the Augmented Series. I've a 61 KeyLabII and the feel is plasticky. Are the keys themselves (if aware) improved and more realistic such as a 70s Hammond? Thanks for the excellent review.

I love your channel, your personality and how you approach subjects. With that said, polybrute is one synth I try my best not to watch anything of because last time I gushed over a gear was sub37 and now that I got it I hate that I have to sleep and not play with it. You're right, I don't need polybrute but by all that is Holy and unholy, I want it so bad. I also feel like with that combo my picture would be on milk cartons as another missing child because I'll definitely never leave my room.

I have my Matrixbrute and love it but this thing is my next must have...I used to be a Korg fan for decades but, when the Matrixbrute came out it was a game changer. This will be my next beast to conquer making this synth 17. loved this video

Nice review! Thank you! I know it may sound like a silly question, but how would you compare the Polybrute with the Moog One, without considering the price difference?

I've had my PB for a couple of weeks now. I am a rank beginner with keyboards and synths, so my playing has a long way to go anyway. It is 4k in my money (AUD) and my original idea was to keep it a while, then give it back if it didn't work out. There is a lot to learn with this thing, so I have set myself quite a task. But it's definitely staying.

Being a generation older than you, remembering extraneous noise, patch cables, tape hiss, unstable tuning, as things which were never to be reintroduced, ever, I love the idea of the perfectly evolved computer music instrument. Milestones like the addition of memory locations, fm, assignable modulation. Have I made better music because of any of these things? Yes! They keep me coming back. They keep me feeling the same rush as when I first swept a filter knob. When I saw the Hydrasynth module, I had come very close to buying a Polybrute. It's a matter of time. At my age I learn more slowly and I have already got too much gear I haven't fully mastered. I'm greatly reassured by your assertion that muscle memory enabled part of your relationship with this instrument. I learn best that way. Certainly, I agree with you about French instrument design. I will succumb.

I love the fact that finally some said something about how its sounds, or at least that agrees with me about its sonic qualities. I still think its s a brute however it does sounds strange one way or the other. I still can not translate its sound in to words. I see a a lot of them as occasions too.

Does the polybrute have the tilting top? Not that it's important but I just like that style of build for a synth.

What is the difference between the Matrixbrute and the Polybrute? They look very similar, but the Matrixbrute looks bigger.

Hmm! Very Nice and I want one but am not that convinced by the sounds coming at me from the many reviews I have seen so far. Do like your review! Nearly Three grand in my book warrants a view in person before I shed my stash of hard earned bucks. The circle is becoming full and the hardware we all dream about gets closer but I am going to wait a while longer unless Arturia want to chuck one my way.

Is it possible to use this sinth as a MIDI controller of VST softsynthes ?

I recently found myself with some spare cash and it crossed my mind to buy one of these! I already have the MatrixBRUTE... but then I remembered that I need to be careful with spending at the moment as I'm trying to move house. Furthermore, getting a wonderful piece of gear like this and then not being able to set it up in a studio until I've managed to relocate would have been a very frustrating experience! So instead I got a couple of smaller items and postponed the PB. If I get to that new house and set up a studio, I'll definitely revisit the plan...
