Polybrute will lead you to new and interesting places when making sounds. After two years of having one it still regularly surprises me.

THANK YOU for saying that. If I had the money I'd jump on the Polybrute (tried it at Guitar Center). Any Synth player worth their weight in Cutoff filters will know what to do with any sound when they hear it. The PolyBrute is Butter smooth!.

It's an incredible synth. Underestimated by a lot of people. Anyone who has worked with software synths will really appreciate the sound design capabilities. The sound is beautiful.

I think of the PolyBrute and MatrixBrute as a modular system without cables.

good to see you with it!!! and thank you so much for your time! :) it's a super-versatile and beautiful synth. I bought one of the first units available and it's still on my studio. one of the things that I like the most is the "random creation patch" function. Extremely useful to find new paths. Also the fact that you have a software to interact with (well.. I know that sometimes that sw hangs up or needs to reboot polybrute to be able to connect with), but you can look for new patches extremely fast. The internal FX are also super-powerful. Keybead is not top notch, and also I would use different knobs to show more premium taste, but I still love it :)

I'd like to see a video where you play a section of your album - or a live gig - and show us how you make some of the sounds used there, including how you think about adding sounds to a piece and how you translate that into programming the synth(s).

I absolutely love mine. I feel like anytime I touch it something really cool is made. Also love the vst controller. The way you can get super creative with all of the touch sensitive areas & keys even is so cool.

The in-between morph patches you talk about are exactly what make the LXR-02 so special as well.

Exciting 🪬 I really want one! I look forward to hearing the magical patches you create (hopefully with walkthroughs?! 😅)

I ended up selling a lot of stuff I had and kept what I really use. It really helps you focus and improves the results for me. Also for digital stuff you loose a lot of time learning multiple interfaces to essentially do the same things.

I’ve found that once you get a feel for how the oscillator and filter sections work, you realize that there is no one init patch on the Polybrute, or one raw sound. There are maybe 20 or 30. And then you realize that superpowers 4 and 5 are the oscillator and filter sections. And there are many more. Some you will discover in six months, or nine, or even a year. It’s loaded with analog easter eggs that will blow your mind when you find them.

Interesting insights. I guess it depends on whether the Polybrute fulfills the users needs? For me as a recreational user/hobbyist the Polybrute really hit home as soon as I unboxed it. The amount of hours off pleasure I've had since I started interacting with it have made it a firm favourite. The tactile interactions with it's user/playing interface are almost meditative, highly recommended if thats what folks are looking for

Cool vid. I have one of these myself. Possibly more synth than I deserve, but I love it. There is just so much to use on it.

Great video, just to add one more thing. The effects on the PolyBrute are so well balanced. They blend into the creative aspect of the synth rather than overtake it. The designers have really thought this thing through. It doesn’t need more than 6 note polyphony. I never thought a restriction could be such a positive.

I read how they really wanted to make it 8 voice but they said the cost and the weight would have ballooned even more. You can feel the love that went into this wonderful thing. I never felt the love from most synths I have owned, this thing is special.

@@auralplex I am just quoting what the guy at Arturia said. I have a Polybrute and it's heavy AF. I mean heavy! 2 more oscillators would add to the weight and they wanted to keep the cost under 3K. It's not just the oscillators themselves but the entire signal path that would have to change. I am guessing though they will put one out eventually with more O's.

This is a great video, and I had the same experience, first out of the box I was unsure, but once you start really getting into it, the possibilities are endless. Also, this is very much a unique instrument and it will be part of the lexicon forever. It's a PolyBrute! It's distinctive! So much love is evident that's been poured into this machine by the design team. Arturia has done something special here. It's a lovable beast. It won't replace all your synths (nor would you want it to), but you'll love it. Thanks for this video, I think you nailed it 100%.

One thing I have found, like the synths of old, is let it warm up for 30 minutes and the sounds get sweeter and fuller.

Ive been jonesing for the Matriarch , SO much , after i got the Granny , when it came out ! I STILL think its the best sounding synth i ever owned ! - but after the Matriarch - it WILL be the PolyBrute ! (unless Behringer pulls a fast one , and suddenly announces the BS-80 !) Congratiolations , and may you shower us with great sounds and tunes , my friend ! 😉

I love the way it sounds, I love the way arturia designed the UI, I think it has amazing sound design capabilities. It would join a handful of cheaper arturia synths I already own. I just can't justify the price as a hobbyist. I wish I could afford to spend the money on it.

I have a matriarch, P10, Prophet x, Super 6, OB6, OB8X, model D and Monopoly…….. I love the Polybrute just as much. No remorse, great synth

This is why I love the Solaris. It's sounds like a modular system when plain and raw, then you can modulate for complexity beyond that...

honest thoughts. Fairly accurate as well. It takes some work indeed making these goosebump sounds however it sits in between the early and modern realm.

Think you nailed this one. I was hooked on the literal first preset mine had.. Brute Pad, I think it was. Really sits in this rarified air between being an ambient dream and an aggressive hell scape. I love it. I had a Prophet 08 for a long while, not the 6. The 08 had an extra LFO but was my least favorite thing to program. Love the brute. Probably my favorite over my Quantum or Voyager

Great video! Thanks for sharing. This is one synth I definitely want. Don’t need it either! The Rev2 can be deceiving in that manner as well. Although I do think the raw oscillators have a slightly richer fundamental than the Arturia-Which to me, is neither here nor there. it’s just a design choice. I think it’s an initial effort to clear up some headroom for multiple voices, sounding simultaneously. Because much like you described; both synths have enormous low end, once you program it up to present such details. With all of the power and accessories modern synths have, designers have had to intentionally thin out some of sonic qualities, to accommodate the signals. Bread is only bread when you pull it out of the bag; it’s up to you to add the fixings to make it a sandwich.

REV2 16V which I have had the same initial Comments "Thin weak etc" however a few years later and everyone is amazed by the sounds it can do. I like the Polybrute sound its like OB-6 unique.

I really like the visual representation of the modulation matrix. That is very nice. The morph functionality is pretty incredible. I wonder what you would think of the Summit?

I had a Peak for awhile but sold it for the Iridium. I did really like that synth though.

From a few that have mastered the PolyBrute,they have said it suits them because they have the diligence and sense of exploration to make it what THEY Need it to be. Most synths can do that,which has been proven by those who can master their gear.What makes this one cooler is you have more tactile control,and keeps one from having 40 different synths. Besides,what a brilliant look, like some great furniture that makes sounds..

I have long coveted this synth. To be honest went down the rabbit hole with eurorack (in the best possible way) when I was making my leep back into electronic music. It was a toss up between the modular path and this beast. No regrets really but the GAS does creep in time to time. When it does, a quick glance at my trusty QS7 (going on 25 years?), settles things down. Great video, thanks.

i bought one today, its amazing. I prefer it over my prophet and juno 60, pro 800, and polysix. The sounds are maybe not the most in your face, but absolutely inspiring to come up with melodies.

There are two main tracks in synthesis as I see it right now. There’s a throwback to analog signal paths, with purity of sound at forefront, and there’s the multi modulation, for lack of a better word, softsynths in a box. To my mind the obvious way forward is to merge the best of both worlds in a cost conscious way. There are some designs that are close but not fully there. History shows that sound wins, and prior “virtual analog” designs didn’t stand the test of time in terms of value appreciation. I believe someone will come out with a cost conscious beast that really pushes both features.

Interested in Polybrute, however Arturia apparently have omitted either VCO1 or VCO2 switching into a low frequency mode, such as available in Anno Domini 1978 on Sequential Prophet-5. So many situations where it is extremely useful to have one audio VCO in low freq mode to provide what was called Polyphonic modulation. This necessary, simple feature would be very simple to implement in Polybrute software, just by instructing DAC to offset by a negative voltage, assuming DAC swings negative. Many several areas of sound are absent from the Polybrute without this simple feature. I hope this simple suggestion will find it's way to engineers.

Polybrute has been amazing. It’s an extremely expressive synth, that sounds great. Some people say it’s sounds “thin” but it sits in a mix beautifully, and really that’s what matters.

Yes, that "thin" or "sound" people want when auditioning a synth alone, all by itself, is not practical in the real world unless you are soloing on stage. In the recording studio, huge sound is only necessary when you are orchestrating with just 2 or 3 instruments, and only for soloing, huge sound does not accompany very well and certainly does not function well in chords. This is why I use digital for polysynths and analog for monosynths.

Congratulations! The Arturia synths have the tendency to get weird quick and that can be very good or can be very bad. And both can happen really fast in succession ;D Let's see when GRAS kicks in for the Rev2... Cheers!

The Polybrute is different in that the really weird stuff kicks in the upper range of the knows. Brute factor, for example, acts to soften the resonance and saturates the Steiner Parker filter nicely, and then around 4 o’clock it starts getting hairy and mayhem ensues.

I'm actually a drummer who occasionally plays the guitar and two years ago I wanted to get myself any versatile polysynth for exploring... ... and got myself the Polybrute! And I don't regret at all!

I have a prophet 6 and LFE modulation box. This is the only reason why I haven’t bought the Polybrute yet. One good night of drinking and I might just get one

Hello new friend! Just meeting you here. I enjoyed your video! Stay blessed ! I imagine the Polybrute can emulate the Prophet 6 (?) One thing I love is the range of control one has with this instrument and the futuristic spacey sounds one can come up with! I am currently anti-DAW (back trouble and some vision challenges lol!) I owned a Prophet 600 back in '83 😊 just wish the polybrute was a little more gig friendly and less stingy with inputs lol! i've had the polybrute just a couple of weeks I intend on using it to first create music for healing ☮️, and second... to just have fun, create beats, improvise with ...all as we morph to be Martians.

Im a recent subscriber to your channel. You are truly hilarious--and I LOVE your synth reviews :) I was tempted to pull the trigger on the Poly B, but Arturia kinda blew off my questions about plans to add MPE to this bad boy. Hence, the Trigon 6 or Super 6 are on the top of my synth "lust list" for now. That said, I own just about every soft synth made by Arturia. Great company.

This to me is one of those synths that look amazing and can be very complex sounding. On the other hand though, I'm not super keen on the overall tone of the instrument. But then again it does a massive amount of fantastic things.

Fair enough... is it just a taste thing though? Like I have never really liked anything Korg, but a lot of people do.

I have the same feeling, reasoning with myself about buying or not buying, but for the MiniFreak.

I vacillated between the PolyBrute and Matriarch for some time and played them both in my local store, decided on the Matriarch for the reasons you laid out, being able to control and patch to and from other equipment was very important to me. If I had the cash I’d get the polybrute too but…

The Prophet 6 is a gem. (Prophet 5 too) I got a Prophet 5 to "Replace" the Prophet 6... that never ended up happening. Now, I have both... you don't just 'sell' a Prophet 6 when you know how to work one.

Sounds good to me. This is one of the better demos, in terms of representing the sound of the thing. My earphones were filled with sonic richness.

I agree about the Prophet 6 or OB-6 they have something magical! I am saving up for the OB6. Just before lockdown I went to the music store and sat down and I was like… “Woah…. It’s seems that I knows what I want in my pads and bass!!! And I can’t even make it sound bad!” But… yeah it’s a lot of money and I don’t really need another synth… or guitar for that matter and I did buy a new guitar last year 😅” So this week I decided to save up for the OB6. And I guess I may sell my Prophet8 desktop and DeepMind 12 then, which both served me well.

I am talking myself into the UDO or Trigon 6…. I am considering this too and even the Prophet 6 - even though I already have a Prophet 10, Rev2, Sub 37 and Deepmind 12 - I think I would get more variety with one of the first two. The morphing is amazing on this one.

As always your videos are wonderful you play the board at a level I can only aspire to be - thank you for sharing. It's now February 2024, how are you with the Polybrute as of today. I'm on that last notch where I'm likely to order a PB, and sell my Analog Four MK2, and just keep the Analog Rytm MK2 as the 1.70 updates makes for all of Euclidean fun. I was wondering will Arturia add Euclidean to the PB and a chord/scale engine? Anyway wanted to tap into your more recent experience. I to am inspired but the all in one place / one machine expressiveness. Get a bit overwhelmed by more than one box, but I think the AR will fit nicely with this, sequence/split the keyboard on the PB and play along. Plus I am back to recording on the DAW and the PB will just be wonderful in that space. Any comments and or observations will be much appreciated. Cheers

I had already been kind of thinking of this synth. I had got thinking that i liked what a MatrixBrute could do but decided to ignore that because GAS. I already had a Matriarch, Pro3, Subsequent37, and a stack of semi-modulars, so i already had plenty of monos. But then I got an amazing deal on the MatrixBrute, and after playing it for a few hours, I unexpected discovered that I was totally in love with it in a way which was different from my other monos. The layout and human interface of it, the assignable filters, it just has some things to it that others don't have, at least not all together in the same package. But I still didn't have an ANALOG Poly. (But gunner, you have an Iridium, and a hydrasynth, and modwave. why do you need to have an analog polysynth?) Uh... I don't know, other gunner? Reasons... I guess. Well also I canceled an order for a MOTU interface that was backordered horrifically so suddenly there was this chunk of change, and a conspicuous absence of an analog polysynth, AND this idea that there was a good possibility I would love the PolyBrute in a way that is similar.. I'll be finding out later this week when it arrives. And no, I didn't get it because of you. If I hadn't been canceling an order for an expensive and severely delayed interface, it wouldn't have happened. However if I am being honest, seeing you get one did nudge me in to pulling the trigger on something I was going to do eventually anyway. I mean, it's PolyBrute or Moog One.

For future videos, I would like to see it used on a contemporary electronic music track like house or something. I see too many people demoing the Polybrute's ability to do ambient music, drone, and other spacey styles.

Haha I did the same with the OB6. For some reason I had to own one. Glad I did though.

The trick with "thin / Brittle" synths (aka MOST Japanese synths) is a REALLY good effects processor. Personally, I'm an Oberheim junky, but I kind of have a thing for the stupid TE OP-1 so I get it.

Poly brute is a budget synth compared to what moog - sequential and Tom OB one can conjure up - I had a go on the poly brute at super booth and was a bit underwhelmed but I hate using earphones plus the volume was a bit low for some reason - when you look at what the poly brute has got up it’s sleeve it’s very good value to be fair

I had a similar experience: a couple of days at first of worrying about it not sounding instantly "fat", then figuring out how to get thick, full sounds out of it, and being constantly surprised by new discoveries. It can sound very lush and warm (which surprised me after the demos I'd seen) and tonally it stands up well beside the OB-6, my other analogue poly. You get some nice full sounds here. One thing that's not emphasized in demos of the Polybrute is that it does "standard" synth sounds very nicely too, and can do a passable impression of many other synths. My only complaint about it is that there are still bugs in the firmware (including one that can freeze the whole synth), which Arturia need to fix soon.

Thanks for this great review! "Thin" and "thick" are subjective terms to describe different mixtures of audio waveforms. Most decent synthesizers allow you to create both "thin" and "thick" sounds, and the Polybrute is clearly no exception to that. If you're hearing a sound that you feel is too "thin," then just tweak some knobs and sliders and push some buttons until it sounds "thicker." That's part of the FUN of creating sounds with any synthesizer.

While I do agree, to my ears the Prophet 6 just has more presence in the low/mids. That doesn’t make the Polybrute a bad synth, it just has a different character and different strengths and weaknesses. It’s a bit like different microphones - they all have a slightly different color, and some make you work harder to achieve a certain result.

Not that we NEED to have them both, but they sometimes can help us cover more expressive ground than either could by itself.

There is also a master EQ section in firmware too. Thick and thin can often be attributed to something as simple as native EQ settings. I would strongly recommend adjusting the master EQ to your specific preferences when it comes to the general tonality of the sounds 🙂👍

How would you describe or compare your first impressions of Iridium? Was there more wow-factor than with Polybrute? I've been on the fence for so long with that synth, but I think I'm finally destined to get an Iridium Core pretty soon, unless I'm able to convince myself otherwise.

Would be nice to see a rundown of what every source and destination is in the mod matrix

All the available sources are those listed just to the left of the matrix buttons. Destinations are essentially any dial or slider on the front panel. I do plan to make a video about a few destinations that are hidden in the menu. 👍

I’ve been eying the Iridium and Polybrute. Maybe you can make a versus video with the prophet 6 and Polybrute. and also, the Polybrute and iridium. I now they’re 2 completely different synths but because they’re flagships for analog and digital, it would be cool to see one midi pattern manipulated on both keyboards. It would be more or less to hear digital vs Analog

Woohoo, I remember putting my bet on you breaking sell/rebuy habit, because you won't be able to sell it at the first place :) Knowing your other synth, I hope you'll enjoy it "completing", rather then "replacing" anything. I went again to your music on BC today (yeah, "someone cares about your music" :) I can hear how you would make the thing sing. I also like to make a track with just one hardware synth (while have total 4 analogue synth at this price range (BTW, GC give 15%off at this time of year, if you have not made better deal with someone else. I got when it was on intro sale with discount, so consider it a steal for the instrument). The reality it opens-up to you over time. No because you need to learn to do better/deeper, its just ingrows. One differentiator you probably have not explored or may not see a value yet, as judging by the vids playing hw/standalone, it's multi-instance VST plug. Settings just live as part of your DAW project, adding extra layer to interact/automate synth. You can go back to something you did and explore more in another song (while easily renaming/saving patch to synth). After time DAW interaction (multi-instantiated is the key) becomes new norm ...... same as having morph know, morphee for anything (not only morphing between 2 patches, and ribbon. For me it became main keys in front of me for playing anything ... and extra pleasure to just turn it on as a synth :) Congrats, hope you'll enjoy it, as I do. My current combo: Prophet-6 & Subsequent 37 (latest acquisition) quashes any polysynth GAS tbh.

I remember being so excited when the Prophet 12 came out, I bought it immediately. Now there is like a hundred amazing polys out there, should I replace my P12?

I have a rev2 as well.. with a polybrute otw.. if you were to get a 16 voice in the future would u get the rev2 again or something else? I would like to have a 16 voice handy but not one that doesnt make sense now that the polybrute is coming. Interested in your thoughts. Great content btw. Subbed 💪🏽

Thanks! I might look into the Summit to complement the PB. I had a Peak (half a Summit) for awhile and it was very good and would give you more digital flexibility with the wavetables.

As an owner of the Matrixbrute I have a pretty good Understanding of how the Synthesizer might work but I am curious about the polyphonic sequencer if it’s polyphonic at all, could you expand on that a little bit? Thank you.

Did you have a mini freak out?

I divide synths into two categories: a) those whose init patches already sound good (P5, P6, OB6 …) b) those that require some work but then sound the more rewarding (Rev2, PX, and the PolyBrute). The PolyBrute is a real beast. Try to record the morph knob with the motion recorder, or route it to an expression pedal. Wow! However, there are some drawbacks: 1. As unlimited the mod destinations are, the mod *sources* are too limited. On other synths I often route the VCA envelope to additional destinations. You can‘t do this on the PB. Noise mod on the Steiner-Parker or the ladder resonance? You can‘t do this on the PB either. They should have made the source column variable, too. 2. The FX are very good compared to the P6. However, dedicated knobs for dry/wet, depth, and speed would be nice.

Agree completely. I’ve run into a little annoyance with the limited mod sources too. Still a really unique synth though.

Thank you for sharing! I'd love to know more about how you managed to extract yourself from the "not everything has to be hooked up at once" doldrums... Do you have a "special spot for today's synth"? Do you unhook everything? Or is it all just a daily mess like it is in my studio? 😮‍💨

Haha I feel that. I used to have everything hooked up all the time, but in the past year or so I’ve started just pulling one or two things off the shelf at a time. The only time it has been a bit annoying has been for the occasional scoring to picture I do, but since I’ve been mostly focused on my own music and the KZread channel this year it has made the most sense for me. Definitely feel more focused when I sit down to work.

@@JamesonNathanJones I'm torn between "All the MIDI, All the Time (plus audio and clock)" and "Only audio, you never use the MIDI unless you can't play the part anyway; stop lying to yourself". My art form needs to move past cable management and configuration. I miss making music. I'll try your approach. :)

That machine is beautiful. Congrats! While I wouldn't compare the moog grandmother to the prophet 6, I relate to your experience in that every time I touch my moog it sounds awesome (at least to me). Good synths make ears happy.
