I've lived in the Midwest for a while, and I don't think it's really that Midwestern. Like, yeah, there are definitely elements, but I'd say it sounds kinda more East-coasty, especially with the speed of talking, which is too fast.

Damon Lewis deserves a medal for his American accent because it wasn’t until his acceptance speech at some awards show after band of brothers that I discovered he isn’t American. Also, Kate Winslet in Mare of East Town, straight up nails the philadelphia accent that, while very subtle, is also VERY distinct.

This is why I got used to take little breaks from the fandom, you'll be surprised how much can help your mind, social life and the way you view the artist you love. When we are much deep in the kpop fandom it really can mess up our minds and also can create a type of co-dependency that's pretty hard to figure out how to deal with (trust me I've been there many times). The mindset that kpop fandom give to us is literally "I can't leave without this people", "this fandom is my family and my place no matter how toxic it can get sometimes", "I need support them no matter what or I would be a bad fan" and even "They need me!", but then you take a break, take care of your own life and you know what? They're fine, the fandom is fine and you got some energy back as well :)

I don’t know man- as a fellow kpop fan I find the parasocial relationships a bit scary, yes, but they can also offer a lot of value. It’s certainly something I’m aware of, and afraid of… but my fandom/parasocial relationships have done and are doing a lot for me in the sense of inspiration and personal growth. The fear I know comes from my choice to trust in my idols (I know, I know 😂😂😅) and their company, bc as Abby mentioned discomfort//hurt comes when they let you down. It’s definitely something worth thinking about, and I’ll definitely be rewatching this video

"These people do not know me. They know the edited version of me." I think this is SO important to point out. Like Bo Burham said, celebrities and performers are merely offering a service. You shouldn't obsess over them or their personal lives because knowing their work doesn't mean knowing *them*. Nowadays there is a devotion to personalities instead of a devotion to their work. That's quite dangerous. For example, I really enjoy watching Oliver speak and he seems like a nice guy but the moment his videos stop being interesting to me, I don't need to stick around. You don't own performers loyalty.

I also think it's very important to be able to separate art from the artist namely because humanity leaves the best of ourselves in our art. As people, artists are not paragons. Art CAN be a paragon. Bing Crosby beat his kids so bad one of them grew up to commit suicide. Ernest Hemingway was tragically mentally ill and an alcoholic and blew his brains out with a shotgun. Martin Luther King Jr. cheated on his wife. Gandhi was a racist. Sean Connery had a hell of a misogynistic streak. Especially with cancel culture and all that, I think it is important to separate the art from the artist. Don't ask the artist to be moral, because that's a failed inquiry. Art is inherently moral, and guides us best because it communicates everything we need it to for us. But people suck, and are sloppy, and addicts, and mentally ill, or shit at social skills. But we can be geniuses and angels in art. I find that that to be very comforting from a "We're all going to die someday" viewpoint. The idea that the best part of yourself can be a little bit immortal is a nice one.

For example, if I post about a new product, I won't add a meme to it, gross... what I will do is something along the lines of "hey, we have a new product and if you liked "older product" you'll love this one! It includes x,y,z... here's the link and if you put in code x, you'll get 10% off!" Something like that. Just keep in mind, the person behind some of these company social media accounts are usually under-paid interns. So while they're cringey, don't be so hard on them lol

As a person in the general kpop fandom, every time I hear about parasocial relationship I feel this weird feeling. I am not a teenager, and I wasnt a teenager when I got into kpop, but there was a good while where a part of me- A very small part- Truly believed that one day maybe if I did the right things and went to the right places, I might be able to marry my favorite artist for real. Allthough deep down, I did know that it was just a fantasy, and I always had an awareness that I would never truly know anything about these people Now, several years in, that part of the parasocial relationship is long gone, and I know very well that they dont know me at all and that the way kpop artists are marketed feed very heavily into connecting with you personally- I can recognize even better that I will never know exactly how the person I am watching truly is When you mentioned about hurt when "the artist does something that is viewed as betrayal", I had a brief think about how angry some fans get when these people start dating, but I thought more about when they truly have done something that *is* betrayal. Without mentioning names, there was a big scandal where an artist from a very high profile band was caught participating or at the very least, knowing about some really heinous shit in a nightclub that he owned, and even though he was not one of my personal favorites, the pain of feeling as if I had been lied to, and the panic afterwards of feeling as if every artist I liked would some day turn out to be a terrible individual and questioning wether I could even stay in this fandom after all of that. Especially after more people were implicated as having been involved. Eventually I calmed down and decided that it's best not to judge until I truly know, and to enjoy these artists but perhaps with even more caution to how attached I actually become. Conversely, I still often feel like I know these people. Even though Im aware that that is exactly what they are trying to make me feel, and that I am perfectly aware of the fact that I can never know how much of what I know about them is true and how much is false. If anyone has ever wondered why kpop fans seem so insane, it has a lot to do with the way the industry cultivates parasocial relationships in my opinion. Especially young people feel like these artists are their friends, that it is their job to protect and shield against harsh critisism (or any critisism) and they take a percieved attack very personally. I am rather torn on this, as a person without many real life friendships, these parasocial relationships have often made me feel less alone but I can tell that they often are detrimental to both fans and artists alike anyway enough of that unhinged rant that no one is going to read, great video lol I enjoy the aesthethic (tm)

As a kpopper myself, I kept hoping that Olly would bring it up somehow. Today's influencers are some of the best examples of this parasocial relationships being used for profits, but if you want to see this happening on a higher level (not just individuals profiting like this, but entire companies built on the idea that they will create parasocial relationships for consumers), I think kpop is the best example these days of this phenomenon. For me, it has never been about that (I like the choreographies), and it's terrifying to see so many tween and teen girls getting sucked into these dangerous situations, and as a result, never really learning how to form healthy relationships. :/

I have the exact same complicated relationship with kpop. The job of a kpop artist is to cultivate a relationship that's part friendship, part romantic, part parental (in the sense of watching them grow and helping them succeed). It's so easy to fall into the parasocial trap. It's unhealthy for both fans and idols, but it's what makes companies so much money. I also didn't understand how deep the parasocial relationship goes until the incident you mentioned, and the idols involved weren't even especially egregious in their parasocial tactics (they got their popularity before things like Vlive, Makestar, and competition shows.) I can't even imagine the hurt and denial that would occur if a huge 3rd gen idol got into serious trouble.

(also during the time my dad has done some violent things + i was getting kicked out of school) ,the entire community was talking about his death. It really is that addicting that that was only when i snapped out of it and realised i had to set a boundary for myself. People may laugh at kpop fans on twitter but damn if i don’t understand how much that community can comfort a teen with a bad personal life i still keep up with it but it saddens me when i see young girls defending that parasocial relationship because it may be the only thing keeping them going

That's something I've seen recently too. Ex. when big youtubers get called out, there's always a decent portion of their fanbase defending them from criticism, but the majority of the people talking about it are people who were fans before the information came to light - because, of course, who cares if somebody like Ben Shapiro said or did a bad thing, we already know he sucks, but these fans believed they were fans of a good person who would never do something like that (even though in reality, this only proves how little we know about celebrities and internet content creator's true selves at all). Most of the anger comes from their own fandoms, to the point that in many cases their own subreddits start sharing memes about the bad thing they did rather than trying to defend them (Shane Dawson and ProJared come to mind first for me, with Shane's subreddit sharing videos that exposed what he did and Jared's removing him as a moderator so they could flood the page with memes). These are the people who feel most betrayed, because they bought into the wholesome/friendly persona and had no idea what was lurking below the surface, and now they're angry they've been lied to. And that's often a somewhat understandable reaction to have, when so many creators build their brands on being genuine while also trying to pretend their past (or present) less than savory actions don't exist.

I once visited a super modern take on Macbeth (the language was the same, but there was lots of neon, the witches were kinky BDSM-slaves, a glowing white cube that would get pushed back and forth and reveal puddles of fake blood etc.) and it translated the claustrophobia of the play better than anything I've ever seen before. Art is a feeling, and as we all know - feelings don't follow rules.

Interesting ideas are likely to form doing something mundane, which is also why shower thoughts are a thing. 2. The acoustics are great. 3. The lighting is usually pretty good in a bathroom. 4. It's probably where the biggest mirror they have is, so it's easy to film themselves.

Literally my tour guide at the Louvre when talking about the now famous glass pyramid and talking about how some people "didn't like the modern buildings among the old architecture." As I pointed out, and she agreed with me, "Back when it was a castle, and then a palace, at some point every building, portrait, and sculpture was modern during that time." Also apparently some people dislike a pyramid, a supposed death symbol, at the center of the Louvre. But I think those people are wrong about I.M. Pei's vision. The pyramid does not represent death, but eternity. My guide made a point of showing not just each individual piece of art, but also how certain styles influenced others. And I noticed something, probably the same thing Pei did. From the ancient Egyptians to the Romans to Napoleon to I.M. Pei. The pyramid has been a symbol for every one of these people. And it is not a symbol of death, but of eternity. The only true kind of eternity there is: the eternity of memory, the eternity of symbols, the eternity of art, and the eternity represented by modern museums to immortalize the works of great people and to give us a little time capsule of the ages they live in.

Then I got super confused when I saw I was already subscribed, did a double take when I saw the name, and literally thought, "why is some guy on Philosophy Tube's channel?". Then I remembered she first presented male, and I felt super dumb. All this to say, cheers to Abigail: she's so good I tried to subscribe twice.

It's really incredible what the mix of parasocial relationships and anonymity can do. You said that it can feel like a betrayal when someone you admire does something you don't like or approve of, much the same way it hurts when a friend does something like that, but I can't imagine these people would send death threats to their real friends. They could just talk to their friend, but the lack of access to someone they've formed a parasocial bond with pushes them to extremes so their demands are noticed. They know you aren't going to personally respond to them, they know they won't be able to have a one-on-one to fully explain what they think you've done wrong, so they just exert as much pressure as possible to make you change while knowing that being anonymous protects them from consequences. Or maybe I'm just rambling, I dunno.

You’re sort of right, but I don’t think it’s because they’re being pushed to extremes that they send death threats. I’m more likely to think it’s because, despite the parasocial relationship, it’s harder to grasp that the person behind the screen is as real a person as your friend, which makes it easier on the conscience to be mean to them. (Although why you would do that to someone you admire I have no fucking clue.) Add that to the fact that anonymity lessens the consequences-your friend might tell your other friends and ruin your rep if you do something awful to them, but an Internet personality can, at worst, block you but that’s it.

A lot of those people who send anonymous death threats absolutely do make them to their real friends, or threaten suicide or other big risky act to gain a desired behaviour too. Or threaten a breakup, or a release of some secret the friend had formerly entrusted them to. Many of those people quickly stop being friends with the person who made the threats, but a few stay in fear (which leads the abuser to think it's a winning tactic, just as PUAs thinking a 1% "success rate" is actually really high and a sign of their skill??).

  • @kupamanduka

Well, I've heard people send anonymous death threats to their real friend, so perhaps that's another two cents. I mean, whether how close parasocial relationship could feel like it's real, there's a barrier where everyone short of grasp it. The barrier is there. So that's why they went to the extreme, and perhaps that's too why they went anonymous to sent death threats to their real friends. Because, apparently, they're cowards. And they want their identity keep unknown as strong as possible.
