Artist Titus Kaphar on depicting loss and finding purpose

One of the country's hottest artists, Titus Kaphar has long tackled under-representation of minorities in Western art through his plays on classic paintings. He talks with correspondent Rita Braver about his artwork, and about NXTHVN, an arts program he co-founded that aids emerging artists, curators and students.

Tragically, the conversation never mentioned black children killed by gang violence or drugs as another massive reason for the loss of children.

You beat your drum. He is beating his. You sing in the chorus of your ilk. He focuses on his viewpoint. The late Nina Simone, Billie Holiday would have some choice words for what you think they should be singing about. We are not your mouthpieces or puppets! We witness our lives. As Bishop Tutu shared: You'll travel a road and see a sign. Black people cross here. Go further, another sign: Black people very cross here!

Absolutely right, they talk about invisibility, how about all those killed by gang violence. They are the definition of invisibility, no one will touch that topic because it isn’t black and white, it too complicated and inconvenient.

Because the topics of black on black violence, gang violence etc is too complicated and inconvenient. Blame the police because that’s the low hanging fruit.
