The art of "Gruff," a film that's handmade
A new short film called "Gruff" features extraordinary artwork by filmmaker Julian Curi. But it's not computer animation. Curi drew all of his characters and backgrounds by hand on paper, manipulated his drawings like puppets before the camera, and used computers to erase the wires, giving his film a uniquely intimate feel. The film centers on the relationship between its heroine, Hazel, and her emotionally distant father, Abuelo, a character loosrly based on Curi's own father. Curi talks with correspondent Jonathan Vigliotti about creating his unique film, which got its start via crowdsourcing on Kickstarter.

I gust hit the 100th like to your comment. I could not agree more.
I remember his shorts popped off from KZread and when he had his crowdfunding campaign going. It’s crazy to see just how far he’s come with his film and he deserves everything he’s getting out of it!
I love the innovative style of film making for Gruff. I want to see this film now.

You know you've hit the big-time if you have your own segment on a national news program!
This guys deserves recognition. Thanks CBS
I am always cheering for the independent film industry. The quality looks great. It’s all about storylines, character formation and good plots.
I followed him through the process and i was greatly anticipating the finished product . It was amazing!! It _is_ amazing!! I'm si glad he's being recognized!
Love the old handmade animation of Disney and Warner Bros.; never really got better and more human than that.
This is so inspirational! More power to independent animators/filmmakers who actually try something fresh and original.
I’d love to see a feature length animated film done in this style, it’s very appealing and wonderful eye candy. In addition to unique storytelling.
So talented! You made it happen and I am so proud of you. You brought me happiness when I learned of your process -- ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE!!!
Wow! This is jaw dropping and amazing! He's so talented and deserves recognition. Thank you so much for sharing the poignant backstory which led to the creation of the film.
Been following his progress for a while so this is amazing to see the recognition

One word: Amazing!
I just finished watching you on CBS. You have so much patience in creating your masterpiece. Paper cuts of each character and turning into a film. You are a genius.

Luv Sunday morning show-- CBS. &. What an amazing artist to make show: Gruff !!😉👍🙂
I watched the premiere of gruff. It was beautiful. I was telling my mom about it, and I said it was 2 minutes long. It was actually 9. It felt like 2 because I was so invested.
That is amazing!! The film is soooo very touching!
Loved this segment.
Love this method. It is a unique style.
Wow, that artist is a genius! So talented in so many things! What a badass.
Amazing labor of love, artists are so incredible
Just beautiful.
So sad man. When a man becomes a father they need to learn to open up. Life is too short for this hard heartednes. And I am almost certain the father wished he could, but the more you solidify your ways the hard to seemingly becomes to let them down (it isn't though, I finally realised for myself, thankfully at a younger age before it become who I was).
That was an awesome interview. His short film is a masterpiece. Loved it and totally related to it with my own father.
Donated to this dude a few months ago! So awesome
This needs to be nominated for (and win) an Oscar
Beautiful work you’re doing. Thank you 🙏
I've been following along with this project for a while now, over a year at least. I'm delighted that it's so successful, and I know he's going to go on to do amazing things

Very impressive young man!
Awesome super talented guy. Best of luck to you.
❤❤. Respect my father passed away two years ago. He was a strong man, he lived till 80 years old. I still remember him saying. “Te Amo CABRON!” Some people would say it was wrong, but that was my Dad. He provided for me, kept the family together before my Mom passed and accepted the good and bad. Thank you 😅
Awesomeness
Youll never get art like this from AI, and AI will never replace Jane Paulie.
In Japan this is called GEKIMATION, look up the more adult (horror) films, Burning Buddha Man and Violence Voyager really interesting style of film
Amazing work and detail.
These paper cutouts are so much more visually interesting and compelling compared to that over-the-top overproduced computer generated movie.
Impressive.
🎉CONGRATULATIONS!!🎊
Very nice.
Beautiful movie! ⭐️👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 STANDING OVATION!!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼⭐️ ✌🏼🫶🏼🤗
The man who made Wallace and Gromit did a not too disimilar excellent job. It would be interesting to see what this fine creator thought of Nick Park's intricate characters.
Cute 😅❤and talented 😍 a winning combination! 🎉😂
Man hearing him say why he did it makes sense how he had the drive.
I loved elemental
Can you make a gruff couch gag In the next episode of the simpsons
We are generations of traumatized human beings. Blessings to all, be kind.

i love this rather that AI stuff that is starting to look all the same
It's been done...
Disney needs this guy.
Did anyone else come from their art teacher sending you this?😅
Now, if he had just shot it on an iPhone, he could've gotten Apple commercial residuals... ;-)
I seen gruff
How is he come with this idea of using paper?
Now ai will do everything for us
new? they did this on MTVs liquid television (at least do not call it new)
Lol. They’re flirting
looks way better than elemtanatatao or whatever
Cool. I wrote, developed, edited, illustrated, formatted, designed, and published my own series of books. I even made dozens of videos with original music, my voice-over work, etc. 💪😎✌️ I hope that some rich news station says hello sometime! That'd be cool. Unlikely, but cool.
Miss peel
Eh its ok
The grandpa died at the end
Skibidi toilet
I’d rather pay $20 for gruff than any woke BS Disney or others put out. This was a good short movie that told a good story.
