Artist Talk: John McQueen at the Flinn Gallery | Sunday, April 30th

John McQueen’s work is featured in the Flinn Gallery exhibition, WordPlay: Messages in Branches & Bark, a collaboration with browngrotta arts, on view from March 30 - May 10, 2023.
Watch John share about his artistic process and the playfully subtle messages that he incorporates into his work. He talks about how he uses willow, bamboo, birch bark, and waxed string to create animal and human figures, and objects such as baskets and books that incorporate woven text. Some of his sculptures and wall art include flattened and cut pieces of plastic, which he uses to comment upon our relationship to the natural world. All of the letters and symbols in his books, baskets, and wall text pieces form words and messages, some obvious and others that require deciphering.
John McQueen earned a BA at the University of South Florida in Tampa in 1971 and an MFA at the Tyler School of Art at Temple University in 1975. He was the recipient of fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1977, 1979, and 1986. He is a Gold Medalist of the American Craft Council.
More on the exhibition:
WordPlay: Messages in Branches & Bark will include more than 50 sculptures by these two innovative artists. The work is both beautiful and intriguing, as it invites viewers to decipher words and meanings and examine how the pieces were assembled and constructed. There are elements of wit, whimsy, and fantasy in many of the pieces, leaving visitors both amazed and amused. All of the works on display are for sale and the proceeds go to the Friends of Greenwich Library to support public programming for patrons of all ages.
Flinn Gallery hours are Monday-Saturday 10-5, Thursdays 10-8, and Sundays 1-5.
