Artist Michael Milosevic on Bargue Drawing

Artist and former Angel Academy of Art student Michael Milosevic (www.michaels-art.de/) from Bad Homburg/Germany describes the process of Bargue Drawing.
I visited him in his studio for making an interview about classical art. In the end there was material for 5 videos - so watch the other videos as well (Bargue Drawing, Cast Drawing 1+2, Working as an artist, learning classical art).

Hello. Your imagination comes from learning reality. As long as you do many observational drawings you'll improve your drawing from imagination. No one can draw something from imagination without having seen the real thing (many times). Even if you speak about aliens or other things that don't exist - the principles apply here as well: it's all made of shapes like spheres, cubes ect. So drawing / copying the real thing will always get you closer to be able to draw from imagination.

How can you mark your measurement if both hands are using the string?

Good luck with the drawing. It will take more time than one would expect, but that's what Michael already told in the video.

Do they teach another method of drawing as a complement? Ive done the bargue drawings and theyre great for learning to COPY reality, but still cannot draw a hand from my imagination, ant thats what i want to learn to do! kind of like the inner structures of the body, etc..

Well. You should be able to view both at one glace from a distance - arm length or more. Having it on an easel would be the best option. I wouldn't recommend it lying flat on a table - too close and too distorted view. But a slanted board can be compensated by the tilt of the head -> second best option.

classicalatelier ok I see. So ideally two Easels....one I draw on and the other will have the Brague drawing plate that I copying. That makes sense. Of course it is NOT life drawing (meaning not 3D) but these courses are the next best thing . Right ?

Eloy Hurtado Bermudez at most ateliers they progress as needed, (an example would be the ear, a heel, an arm, a head doing one or two of each depending on how well the concepts are understood. Once you learn how to do one with shading and edges properly, nothing will be harder than anything else, it will just take more time. Try to find an instructor, live or online like this, you'll need it. Teaching yourself drawing and painting from a book isn't impossible, but what I learned from experienced instructors taught me more within the first few weeks, than year and years and years of self study.
