Artist Interview: Bijoy Jain | Kochi-Muziris Biennale 2014

Bijoy Jain, b. 1965 in Bombay.
Lives and works in Bombay.
Bijoy Jain received his degree in Architecture from Washington University in St Louis in 1990 before working with Richard Meier's company in Los Angeles and London. In 1995, he return to India to found Studio Mumbai.
Jain and his studio have had their work exhibited at many international art and architectural fora, including the Venice Biennale, the V&A Musuem, the Alvar Alto Symposium, and the Architectural League of New York. Awards won by him include Global Award for Sustainable Architecture from L’Institut Francais D’Architecture, Design for Asia Award from the Hong Kong Design Center (both in 2009), and the BSI Swiss Architectural Award (2012).
In this video, Jain shares with us his fascination for bricks as the material and medium of art. The possibilities of brick, Jain thinks, are compelling for an architect-artist. Each brick has its own character: its internal constitution would be particular, its physical appearance distinct. Brick is a unit, but it also has the capacity to multiply and function in the singular, as a mass, and in relation to its difference.
