Artist Ai Weiwei on Freedom, Fatherhood and His New Graphic Memoir “Zodiac” | Amanpour and Company

Exiled Chinese dissident and renowned artist Ai Weiwei is known for challenging authoritarian politics in his work. He was detained in China for 81 days on a charge of "state subversion" back in 2011. This failed to discourage the artist in his fight for intellectual freedom, a pursuit passed down to him by his late father, a celebrated poet. Now Ai Weiwei is exploring that relationship, and his own life story, in his new graphic memoir "Zodiac." The author tells Hari Sreenivasan how his memories connect to stories of Chinese astrological signs.

Hari Sreenivasan did an excellent in-depth interview with Ai Wei Wei about his latest graphic novel "Zodiac". Sreenivasan's insightful questions and Ai Wei Wei's thoughtful responses made for a fascinating discussion that shed light on the deeper meaning behind the novel. Overall, Sreenivasan's interview was a beautiful tribute to Ai Wei Wei's profound and powerful work and the connections between art, memory, and astrology. His art speaks volumes about the human condition and serves as a poignant reminder of the power of creativity in sparking change.

Sreenivasan is surely one of the best interviewers. Your questions are relevant and give the subject a chance to elaborate on some points. Thanks.

Everything about Ai Wei Wei, his art, his political stance and his compasion for the oppressed people is admirable. I read and listen to him whenever possible. There is nothing about his 'tweet' that is inaccurate so hearing that he and his art is being 'cancelled' by galleries makes it apparent that free speech in the West is illusionary.

As Ai said it is troublesome when people in the so call free world can not express their opinions freely ,it’s a shame the cancelation of his art ,we have a problem in Israel that has lasted for decades and there are two nations that suffer because of this war,it was horrible what hamas did to innocent young Israelis ,but the killing of the Palestinians is also horrible since they had nothing to do with this war ! Like Ai said China and Russia are really happy with what’s going on in the USA they would love a fascist state in this country so Russia can expand to what ever country Putin wants to dominate, really sad situation all over the world !

The cancellation of his recent exhibit in London due to his comments on the Israel/Hamas war and the US relationship with Israel, underlines the never ending fight.

It is amazing to witness the power of cancel culture in action. This video, or any recent Ai Weiwei video, literally gets no views :) I don't necessary agree with everything Ai says, but I 100% admire what he stands for. There is no real difference between the "West" and China. The ruling power are only liberal and tolerant towards dissidents against their adversaries. They will tolerate any freedom of speech when they are in a position of confidence/security and as long as the speech does not lead to threatening action. Many Chinese only dismisses Ai because his voice was used to undermine China's rise, leading to justifiable containment policies that are aimed to trap China in the middle income trap or lower-value-added chain. Again, Ai is idealistic and admirable in that sense, but his action unfortunately leads to more obstacles for "his people" to be free - one day to freely speak about everything that is wrong with the "West" or speak about everything that is wrong with China, when there is nothing better to replace it.
