Art x Watches: The Influence of Technology with Wei Koh

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Wei Koh, founder of Revolution Magazine and The Rake, joins WatchBox for a special series during his quick trip to Philadelphia. While Wei was in the city of brotherly love, he dives deep with Tim Mosso into the culture of the city to share a unique perspective, and, of course, talk the watch talk.
Learn about Revolution’s entry into the Pre-owned market:

Check out another video with Wei and Tim:
• Watches x Chill: Wei K...
In this special WatchBox x Revolution piece filmed in the renowned Barnes Foundation, Wei and Tim share their insight and perspective on the parallels between fine art and watches. The Barnes collection has 4000 pieces in the collection, including 900 paintings, and ranges from impressionist to post impressionist to modern art worth a total of $25 Billion. Wei and Tim provide insight on how art and realism were effected by photography thus democratizing reality. They draw parallels to the division of, and the affect on, the watch world created by the introduction of Quartz watches - also known as the democratization of accuracy. The question arises, how are watches going to be perceived in terms of their value through this innovation?
Wei and Tim show a variety of post-quartz watches that they believe defy the changes of the quartz era by appealing to the emotions including pieces from MB&F, FP Journe, Patek Philippe, and Greubel Forsey. Tune in to see the watch collection curated to perfection by Tim, and if anything, to see Tim Mosso and Wei Koh talk watches art. Enjoy on this Sunday and, as always, let us know what you think!

You gotta love how Wei Koh based his whole wardrobe around that De Bethune. Tim's dedication to the sunglasses still wins for the "Is he doing that on purpose?" look though. respect.

Wei and Tim are the MOST knowledgeable and truly articulate horological experts (and more importantly, true watch lovers which is a different thing). Video pieces like this is exactly why I enjoy their respective video presentations (separate or together as they are here). This is just an outstanding video to me, gentlemen. Thank you.

@@the1916companywatchreviews Wei is an amazing humble guy in person, he doesn't come across that way like Tim does on camera, but that can be for a number of reasons like nerves, fear, anxiety, wanting to his very best and the list goes on. But Tim & Wei are magical combination that feed off each other very well.

Wei Koh speaks for me, about passion and feelings over any macho pretensions of “tool watch” when discussing pieces too expensive by far to be classified as tools in 2018. Bravo, and more of this!

There is something here in the fusion of Tim and Wei. They both have extreme knowledge in horology but approach from totally different spectrums. I could see this evolve into a new channel that discusses watch news and the influences of time/pieces. The challenge is solving the visual layout or production that draws a wider audience to enjoy these discussions as an experience rather than just two men talking. Simply put if hodinkee’s Talking Watches episodes (not the office episodes) lead by Ben are the true north to achieve, this could be magical.

I always felt Wei's Yes was a decisive belief and expression of what he conveys, or what is being conveyed to him. His character and perspectives are a pleasure to observe and listen to. I think for this conversation, being more about art/ heart and less on mechanics/ logic, there was less to pin points on.

I get the metaphor, but it's an incredibly reductive view of art history to say art was "representative" pre-photography and "expressive" post-photography. I suppose Wei meant "Western painting" but even that doesn't hold water. I also like how "democratization" of timekeeping was something to be rejected by watchmakers, according to this metaphor. Which, I suppose isn't incorrect, as luxury watchmaking for the ultra-rich seems to have survived the quartz "crisis" just fine. Wei's honesty at 14:38 re: the minute repeater is a breath of fresh air, lol. That being said, I enjoy the content. I find the watchmaking industry endlessly fascinating, wonderful, and terrible. - Artist wearing a G-Shock

  • @UXXV

Ive subsequently watched the video and was actually impressed with the broad scale of knowledge and passion Wei portrayed. This is in stark contrast to other videos I've seen over the past year or so where it comes across as more the spectacle of luxury rather than the love of horology - this one did a lot to raise the bar of what I hope to see in future Wei productions ... albeit he did sneak a few loud Yes' in for good measure. Tim as always exuded professionalism and a mastery of the art that far surpases what anyone would expect of a man so young and with such a varied career history and backstory. Close your eyes and you could well be listening to a master watchmaker in his 60s who has been involved in the art all their life. As for sexism Im not quite sure why that was brought up or even the insinuation of any abuse, I was merely stating fact that his videos critically have a brash and punchy overtone, punctuated with repetition in the affirmative and it dilutes the otherwise wonderful content. Tim’s videos are without question the pinnacle of the watch space and the yardstick others are measured by.

I watch all the Watchbox content as it's stellar stuff and Tim in particular so thats I was hoping it would turn out good ... and as noted it did. I don't watch any of the Revolution stuff for just the reasons you point out but I wouldn't sacrifice a Mosso production :) I didn't venture further into the comments as they can be treacherous, merely commented before I watched (literally minutes after the video was posted). In regard to females and the hobby of watches, I personally have made a number of friends over the years on forums and Facebook groups with woman who share the same interest. In fact one was at Basel with her watch company last month and another is a manager at an Omega boutique in Texas. Thankfully I've not seen sexism though I do not doubt for a moment that it exist as it does in my other hobbies of motorcycles and performance cars unfortunately.

While I enjoy Wei's enthusiasm, I find it really awkward and tasteless when he uses sexual references and swear words to convey his thoughts. I also think Apple watches are poop, but there is a time and a place to say that, and these videos are not it. Always appreciate Tim's ability to convey his opinions in a less vulgar way.

Little bit of reach in the analogy, but ok. Seems like they’re being pretentious for the sake of being pretentious.

That was excellent. You two are a very knowledgeable, engaging combination. I’d happily watch much more of this type of content.
