This was a nasty Connections. You'll see my results below, but I got hung up on the "Shades of Black" too and I couldn't pin down the tree category. And I couldn't name the categories correctly either. If this competition mode I'd give myself a total of ½ point.

The testers for the NYT rated this Connections Puzzle as difficulty 3.7/5... which is the highest in quite a while.

I found connections very challenging. I was focused on magazines for awhile, ebony, maxim, jet. I saw the grille fuel first. Then I sussed the spa parts which killed my magazines. Then there was six trees!!! With the death of magazines I went with the literal definition of maxim and yellow fell into place. Personally, I thought the yellow should be purple and purple yellow. Jewel tones are my favorite color groupings so I had a blast with strands especially with the gem shaped spangram.

​​@@christiana6018I have my good/bad days in Connections and I am now enjoying Strands. I did well in Wordle today getting BUDDY in three tries. Oranje is beyond amazing in these games. 😊

Connections seemed pretty easy for me today. Grilling first, and then I knew chestnut and saw, so I got through quickly. I did see three shades of black and three magazines but discarded them since there wasn't a fourth in either category. Like so many days in connections it's just luck knowing the right alternate meanings. Strands was really cute though putting a gem shape in the puzzle.

This was one of those days when I felt like I was rescued by my vocabulary. I suspected that a lot of people would be unfamiliar with the idea of an "old saw". I imagine there would be a number of people who were unfamiliar with (or fuzzy on) ALL FOUR of MAXIM, ADAGE, CHESTNUT, and SAW... and that was the yellow category. Tough day.

STARE COLIN FUDGY (Thank you, Doug!) BUDDY Strands #119 “Cut and color” 🔵🔵🔵🔵 🔵🔵🟡 Another fun Strands, even though I got the spangram last. They are getting great at forming graphic images with the words. Connections Puzzle #385 🟦🟪🟦🟩 (I fell for the "shades of black" misdirection) 🟨🟨🟨🟨 Old sayings 🟩🟩🟩🟩 Types of fuel for the grill 🟪🟪🟪🟪 Water heating components (I've never been near a hot tub!) 🟦🟦🟦🟦 Trees I got off to a poor start but recovered. It helped to know that "chestnut" and "saw" (usually occurring as "old chestnut" and "old saw") were terms for old sayings. It was also useful to know that ebony is a type of wood, so it must come from a tree.

I make jewelry and deal in all kinds of precious and semi-precious stones and I've never heard the term jewel tones. I got almost all the gems at first glance, but the spangram ended up last because of that. Oh well.... I got wordle in 2 so not complaining.

Connections BYBG - Shades of black PPPP - Found around a pool GGGG - Used to power a fireplace (0.5 pts) BYBB - Trees BYBB - Trees BYYY - ???? Struggled with this one

Didnt find connections too difficult because i focussed on trees / types of wood so got that after one mistake. Also put the purple spa connection as "water xxxxxx" eg water heater water filter etc

Our wild elderberry (elder) are still blooming here; the clusters of blooms are mixed with the ripening berries. The blooms glow white in moonlight. In Connections I made two mistakes getting the blue (trees), including “chestnut,” but once I had the trees, the rest fell into place. Maybe because I never thought of magazines…

ELDER TODAY GIDDY MUDDY BUDDY Strands went okay; I found the Spangram first and used no hints. Connections was a disaster for me; only got the green. I was not familiar with chestnut and saw meaning "old sayings." I thought yellow was difficult. I also could not get the trees.

I know engines can have pumps, jets, and filters… but do they have heaters? I’ll guess that some do, but that it is not standard in modern internal combustion engines.

Any richly-colored object can be described as jewel toned. It does not apply only to fabrics, so it's not "another feminine category." The term "jewel tones" derives from gemstones such as emerald, ruby, and sapphire, and can describe any object having a high level of color saturation.

@@doraa.7873 I accept the correction. I see these tones are also used in interior decoration. I like strong colours too. In fact I sought out and installed magenta, coral and aquamarine venetian blinds in my three main windows. I just didn't know I was choosing jewel tones.

I did horrible today! Wordle in 5 ELDER AUDIO FUDGY MUDDY BUDDY Connections: Absolute Fail!!!! Only got one category, and completely flunked everything else. That "Trees" category took all my guesses. I also thought there would be a "Shades of Black" category. Never even heard of most of the things in the Yellow category. Only one I got was Purple (ironically enough) Strands: Spangram first, but no time bonuses. I saw "Jewel" immediately, but had so much trouble figuring out the second word. The heck does "Jewel Tones" even mean!? Just a complete disaster! Today was not my day. Hopefully, I'll do better tomorrow.

Kinda surprised that a renaissance man like Art forgot that ebony is a wood hence a tree. Pianos had black keys long before plastics were invented. I've never been near a hot tub ( yeugh ) so I was guessing things found in a swimming pool set up !

WORDLE: Substituted a flower with 5 unique letters. ERICA PUNTY HOLDS BUDDY ------------------- STRANDS 119, 10 Lost super hard mode right away trying JEWELER as the spangram. The actual spangram was hard to find, I actually saw all the theme words first but still couldn't see the spangram until I highlighted some of the words and saw what letters were unused. Total solve time 3:29. --------------- CONNECTIONS 384, 1 I managed to solve this after 5 mistakes - see explanation below. Officially I scored it as a loss after the 4th mistake Types of Stoves (0.5) {Trees with CHERRY ASH CHESTNUT GUM} {Trees with CHERRY ASH CHESTNUT EBONY} (Left it overnight at this point because I had no clue. Picked up the next day on my phone ( I was away from home) so I had a full new set of guesses) {Components Of Some Kind of Machine with FILTER, HEATER, PUMP, and SAW} Components Of Some Kind of Machine (0.5) (not entirely sure what the order of the next two misses were, but the first one was my fourth mistake so I officially lost at that point) {Trees with EBONY GUM CHERRY CHESTNUT} {Trees with EBONY GUM ASH CHESTNUT} Trees (-) No idea (-) I knew ADAGE and MAXIM were the same thing, but never heard of CHESTNUT or SAW. I guess I could score it as a completed puzzle with -1 remaining guesses, so it would be -1+2 base (full credit for Trees) which still ends up with a score of 1. :p

You were able to light up all four categories according to Wyna's standards. You did not fail Connections, Lisa. This is how you should look at it. Connections today was difficult.
