It's the most common criticism about this system. Is it justified?

Thank you for highlighting the art contributions in this book. A "house style" can be great for a certain mood or theme, but I think Basic Fantasy has no need for that. It is a community, and the art is another example of how there is something for everyone all gathered together like an art gallery.

I think the art in BFRPG is endearing. Each individual contributor has their own style, as each referee and player has their own style. For a game in the nature of BFRPG, not having a singular set "art style" gives it the charm that few other games have.

I love most (a solid 75%) of the art in BFRPG, but more importantly I love the community-driven, DIY ethos behind it. Someone else wrote that it's endearing - that's a good word. It's just lovely to flip through the pages and think of all the people who sat down and created these pieces out of pure passion. And then many pieces are not just charming, but flat out great. The class portraits, the basilisk and the giant bee come to mind immediately. Here comes the 'but'. My guess is that 90% of complaints about the art would disappear if two guidelines were implemented: 1) all pieces should be pure black and white, no grayscale; 2) no obviously digital elements like glows and blurs (vectors should also be shyed away from but that may be getting overbearing). I don't mind the disparate styles or occasional crude piece, but the more 'clip art'-y, heavily digital work misses the mark stylistically a bit. Love your channel, by the way. BFRPG is criminally under-represented on OSRTube.

Oh, thank you! I'm aspiring to maintain 50% BFRPG content, but not to the point of forcing it when I can't think of a topic. It has a ton of supplements, so there's plenty left for me to mine from.

As an illustrator myself, among other things, I love the artwork in this. Some pieces more than others, but I think it tells a wonderful story about the system, its aesthetic, and its charm.

Tansi, Todd! I have recently found your channel and I love your videos - they are incredibly relaxing to listen to. Chrysogon's Coterie is fantastic - It's incredibly inspirational, and I can't wait to use some of the characters in my upcoming campaign! I'm a freelance artist myself, and it was wonderful listening to you gush about art. I agree that art just needs to be evocative and grab interest, or have that intangible quality of "soul". I am, like you, a fan of myriad artstyles in the same book. BFRPG is not my system of choice. (I lean towards OD&D - Maybe I should pick up Iron Falcon? In any case, a lot of it is easily convertible, so I have a bunch of the BFRPG books!) That said, I love the open source nature of it, and hearing you speak about it with such passion is infectious. I have a Pay-What-You-Want art pack on Itch for people to freely use in their own zines and books. I am currently undergoing some health issues, but when I fully recover and have some time, I would love to formally submit some of my art for the BFRPG project. Again, love your videos - please keep them coming!

The art quality in BFRPG content is amazing - it's chosen carefully to complement, supplement and breakup the text and is definitely well done. Also it's community created. an asset really. Great video showcasing epic artworks and artists BFRPG has.

Couldn't agree more! I personally chose all of the art for each character in Chrysogon's Coterie, and in some cases selected which characters I wanted to assign to an artist to create brand-new art. I loved the experience. It makes me want to write more.

With community contributed work, it's always best-fit if not perfect fit. It can be hard sometimes to get a perfect match between description and picture. With Chrysogon's Coterie, there was sometimes a mismatch between the weapon the character was holding and the main weapon specified in the book. In my mind, they must have another weapon. I would hate to allow great contributions to go unpublished because they don't mirror my words exactly.

Nonesense - from what I've seen showcased in this video many pieces actually DO match the book. Also this was the approach in old rules too.
