Art I: Medieval 500-1400, with Rick Steves

Subscribe at goo.gl/l6qjuS for more new travel lectures! A.D. 500: Rome shatters into a thousand kingdoms. See how Europe pieces itself back together: the castles of the Dark Ages, the grandeur of Romanesque churches, the soaring arches and stained glass of the Gothic style, and the rise of cities and trade that would bring the classical world’s “rebirth” in the Renaissance. Rick Steves.... My wife & I really love and truly appreciate the dedication to the travel programs, to these art history series, and its not only the passion and enthusiasm with details putting into each of these. I feel it's honorable how you have taken care of all your staff & employees during this pandemic, that truly says something about your character and how you feel about relationships when traveling! Back in college after getting out of the Navy ages ago,.I enrolled in 2 incredible Art History classes and what an experience. Lord willing, we might somehow be able to travel to Italy one of these years.

Our host unfortunately leaves it ambiguous when he says people anticipated “something ahead”. If he’s suggesting they were sitting on their hands waiting for the Renaissance, there’s nothing to support that. Contemporary through early-Renaissance scholars (e.g., St. Augustine early on, Petrarch and Erasmus later) thought of it as a between time, but as you say @gavinreid8351 , it was between the time of Christ and His return.

Chiekh anta diop: civilisation or barbarism Ivan van sertima: golden age of the Moors.. maybe good start. Only advice would be to try and negotiate past terms like black, negro, african American etc. they are all misnoners used to confuse and create the illusion we where either slaves or different people from each other all together.. dividing nations/people with words simply put.i.e Nouns are used in language all over the world to identify people places or and object/thing.. adjectives are not used(like black yellow etc)in language globally to denote a person place or object because adjectives are descriptive words not the actual objects thing or person itself. So black is just a crayon colour like Chinese people are not yellow man or yellow woman they are identified by their nationality and not past slave terms or tags brands etc. Find your correct Noun to help read past the hijacked terms which are all really legal slave codes we in the most part agreed to. you may learn a good lesson in this area also... Good luck if you do read these books thats all from me. Peace nobel...

Two books that I found broadened my perspective: Lost to the West by Lars Brownworth, and Eastern Europe! by Tomek Jankowski. The first traces the history of the Byzantine Empire, while the second delivers an overview of everything Europe east of the Elbe. Both are available as ebooks, though I'd find the Jankowski hard to read without the ability to flip back/stop and study maps/etc.

Why in all maps that concern to medieval or ancient period above Armenia is empty area where the Georgia is today? There was kingdom of Iberia than ( and also Kholkheti kingdom which is known its Golden Fleece (that is Knowledge )that Aeëtes took to Greece. It was the hegemonic Kingdom under which Armenia was mainly during whole history until the late period ( I mean at 2:51 map) . Cause of bad PR or lack of information ?

Completely agree on the point...but he isn't alone. I have many exchanges with Catholics & Christians, friends & family who talk of the dark chapter of the evil, bloody Crusades. Like Rick said- rape, pillage & plunder - is how the Crusades are characterised. A false characterisation. Also "The Muslim faith traveled like wildfire"... more accurately by the sword. The willful blindness is amazing to me- especially in our time when we are living through the resurgence of Islam.
