Art-House America: Austin Film Society
Фильм және анимация
Now playing on the Criterion Channel! www.criterionchannel.com/aust...
Founded by Richard Linklater in 1985 as a screening series dedicated to bringing experimental and art cinema to Austin, Texas, the Austin Film Society has since grown into a cultural powerhouse and cornerstone of the city’s creative community-all while remaining true to its edgy, eclectic roots. In addition to their vibrant repertory programming, AFS regularly welcomes renowned filmmakers from across the globe to present their work while fostering homegrown Texan talent through their Austin Film Society Grant program. Revelatory documentaries (NO HOME MOVIE), outré transmissions from the far-out fringes (SINGAPORE SLING), works from the greater Austin filmmaking diaspora (ATTENBERG, COMPUTER CHESS), and a blast of Black queer anarchy (Chocolate Babies)-the films they have selected reflect the spirit of discovery and artistic freedom that is at the heart of the AFS mission.

What Richard Linklater has done for Cinema as a whole is truly exceptional, and he will be remembered for it.

I can remember Linklater selling tickets to screenings at the loft above Quackenbush's cafe, that venue long closed and the building itself recently demolished. He has always retained such passion for cinema, and has always been such a generous benefactor to the Austin community.

It's great to see that the spirit of Art-House Cinema is alive and well!
I'm so happy that I have joined this organization. I have only seen a couple of films so far and they have been excellent.
So proud to be a monthly contributor to this fine organization.
Love AFS and their passion for film, hope to join the community one day
This a great synopsis of what AFS is all about. Thanks for the reminder of how special this is.
Linklater is a rare filmmaker who has created great work while creating great community. This is so rare and I was starting to think it was impossible. This has inspired me to think, maybe it isn't.

The AFS is probably the finest repertory cinema in the entire State of Texas. Outstanding staff, and always an exceptional variety of movies presented.
Excellent! Thank you CC for posting - truly inspiring 🤙

The traffic is indeed the modern bane of Austin, still a beautiful, gracious city, but one not built to accommodate all the vehicles now on her roads.

Jazmyne managed to book a rare 35-millimeter print of Philippe Garrel's 1972 masterpiece 'La Cicatrice intérieure' ('The Inner Scar'), in early 2020, shortly before the pandemic shutdowns. I was lucky enough to attend that screening, and marvelled at the film's incredible formal beauty. I thanked Jazmyne after the screening for showing such a life-altering, beautiful work of art.
Was part of Linklater's interview shot in Ethan Hawke's home??

It was shot at the AFS Cinema! He was interviewed in front of Countdown/Tailout Mural #2. It belongs to the permanent collection of the Museum of the Moving Image, in New York, but AFS has it on loan.
