Go behind-the-scenes with Richard Linklater, Ethan Hawke, Patricia Arquette, Ellar Coltrane and Lorelei Linklater as they delve into how they created this groundbreaking epic.
www.boyhoodmovie.com
Filmed over 12 years with the same cast, Richard Linklater's BOYHOOD is a groundbreaking story of growing up as seen through the eyes of a child named Mason (a breakthrough performance by Ellar Coltrane), who literally grows up on screen before our eyes. Starring Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette as Mason's parents and newcomer Lorelei Linklater as his sister Samantha, BOYHOOD charts the rocky terrain of childhood like no other film has before. Snapshots of adolescence from road trips and family dinners to birthdays and graduations and all the moments in between become transcendent, set to a soundtrack spanning the years from Coldplay's Yellow to Arcade Fire's Deep Blue. BOYHOOD is both a nostalgic time capsule of the recent past and an ode to growing up and parenting. It's impossible to watch Mason and his family without thinking about our own journey.

    sam borden I have to disagree. I've watched many movies and shows where you are really excited for it and then are totally unable to watch it because the acting is so bad that it's just not realistic at all it's just some random people saying lines with cues. I thought Ellar did great in his part and he pulled it off.

    yeah, that is very true. one of the examples that come to my mind is Chandler Riggs (Carl Grimes) from The Walking Dead. In the first three seasons of the show, I think his acting was good, especially for a child actor. But from then on, I feel like his acting went downhill as he got older.

    His acting is perfect. It might seem bad, but that's literally how teenagers act. They don't take things seriously, often their words are dry, devoid of emotion. So it's actually perfect lol

    It's so fascinating to me how many people hate this movie. It has affected me emotionally more deeply than any other film ever has. It moved me to the core, and changed the way that I think about the world. It reminded me how short life is, and how important it is to spend it with family and friends having experiences, not focusing on making money and purchasing things. It also reminded me that even the most misguided and harmful person has a reason that they act the way that they do. It was, to me personally, an incredibly powerful film. It's definitely not a Saturday-night popcorn film for the purpose of sheer entertainment. It is an experience that touches on some of the deepest levels of what it means to be human.

    Absolutely. As stated, it's the moments IN BETWEEN. Growing up isn't packed with all the action. For example, prom is generally just your senior year of high school. That leaves everyone with the moments in between. The daily perseverance of getting up every day, thoughts while going to school, thinking about a girl in class on a Tuesday, etc. May not be the most intersecting to many, but it's truly an iconic experiment.

Photograph = masons interest and hobby/job.Also, patricia arquttes outfit always matches the background of the scene she's in. I heard it was to represent that she is the 'permanent fixture/consistent' in masons life

This isn't that type of popcorn movie to watch, this is an experience. As a 2000s kid myself i truly could relate to this story and Mason's. At some point there are few scenes that made me feel nostalgic. This is one of the greatest movie ever made!! Love this

    For those criticizing the movie for "having no plot" or for not being "dramatic enough"--THAT'S the fucking point! Geez I really do hate dumb people. I mean, it's completely fine if you didn't like the movie and if Linklater's style doesn't do it for you then by all means, you're definitely allowed to hate it. But to nag and question WHY it doesn't have elements of what's traditionally considered action-filled movies means you're too stupid to know that's the freakin' INTENTION of the movie. And that's why most people actually like it, because they're able to actually relate to it in some way or another. Like they said in this video, it's the periods of time between the milestones that actually make up life, not the milestones themselves.

    Precisely- well said! It's ALL about the moments... I can't say I really agree with those who say it has no plot. It just isn't a plot that fits into the cookie-cutter, traditional, classical or conventional forms that have become ubiquitous in our culture. Then again perhaps that means the term "plot" doesn't apply as well as "storyline", "chronicle" or "sequence of events/moments". Whatever terms may most appropriately or accurately describe "Boyhood", I feel that it's inescapable NOT to recognize what an epic, unique & amazing project this piece is- even if you don't care for it.

    One of the best creative experience ever. When you are watching the movie, you just don't realize it but once you walk out of the theater, that's when it hits you hard. To understand and digest what you just witnessed for the last 3 odd hours. I myself felt little grown up when I walked out after watching this. This will definitely be one of those movies that people talk about for ages. To Linklater and to the whole crew, Thank you for this gem.

    ***** So, you need "entertainment" and "action" to have meaning? Think to how you react in your life, it's not like a movie. That's what Boyhood was trying to do, show life, not rehashing dramatics or sensation for the sake of it. You don't need much action for there to be drama in life.

    This film provokes thought and curiosity about life and growing up in a way that no other show has before. The subtle beauty that unravels throughout this movie, scene after scene is almost so subtle that you could watch it twenty times and still not fully recognize all of the small beautiful moments that Linklater has crafted. It isn't that heroic, it isn't even that dramatic, which is what sets it apart from practically every other movie out there. It's the perfect portrait of life, and it has affected me very deeply. Definitely one the best movies I have ever seen.

    I like this film because, as opposed to your regular growing-up movie, the director is not manipulating time. Instead, he lets time manipulate him and everybody else involved. Is almost like his role was to wait, be patient, and slowly keep unearthing a script whose co-author was time itself.

And then you start to realize time goes by really fast and change happens quickly. Also, I'm 18, so watching Ellar grow up in this movie is pretty cool because that was my childhood, you know, everything from pop culture to fashion and the way things were done I mean I can't explain it, throughout the entire movie I'm constantly making these personal connections and it was absolutely amazing to watch, definitely brought tears to my eyes. We now live in a society which has and continues to recklessly attack those "old-fashioned, boring, traditional western values" which were key to having a meaningful, fulfilled life, regardless of losses, disappointments, setbacks,etc. Everyday when someone points to the psychologically destructive aspect of modern decadence, they get attacked, but the great grandmas and grandpas of people today didn't suffer from such malaise of spirit. Today, 25-30% of American women take psychotropic drugs to get through the day and middle age men are part of the biggest spike in suicide. Time to stop bashing old-timey values and take a fresh look at what has been attacked and trashed for the last half-century or so.

  • @tundrawomansays5067

    @tundrawomansays5067

    4 жыл бұрын

    Ronald McDonald Has it ever occurred to you those percentages you assert are taking psychotropic drugs were *raised* by that generation you reify? Because I’m one of those “over half a century” old and no, it *wasn’t* that great “back in the good old days.” Stop buying and promoting that old trope: Those sepia photographs you believe are a reflection of society back then aren’t, weren’t and never will be-it’s an illusion you and too many others simply bought into without any thought, reflection or knowledge of history at all.

  • @robyn905

    @robyn905

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@tundrawomansays5067 Actually that doesnt necessarily have to do with the specific values from the older days. It has to do with an adolescents natural feeling to rebel against what their parents say or what their parents make them do. We can see that now more than ever where there is this new generation of children that actually think the whole millenial hipster woke life is cringe, when back then, that was the whole new rage. And honestly, i agree with @Ronald McDonald. Sure some traditional values can be instilled on children in an emotionally abusive way (which, proves my rebelling point earlier), but when done right, those values are what lead to a more fulfilling life. There are woman these days promoting single moterhood. Its one thing to celebrate single moms for all the work they do, its another thing to claim the world is better without man. I mean i literally have a friend who wants to become a single mom. Its sad that people dont recognize the importance of traditional foundational values like family, which to me is the most important. And sure you dont have to have a complete family to have a fulfilling life, but like the actress herself states, its about the little things. The thing is, no one misses what they never had, thats why people like my friend who grew up without a father, thinks men are trash and wants to be just like her mom and raise kids all on her own. Its so disturbing whenever i hear her say that. If only she knew most of the problems in this country, especially from marginalized groups, comes from having a broken home. Im sorry maam but if you truly believe our life isnt at a moral decadence now more than ever before in history i dont know what to tell ya. Also another really obvious reason why everyone is more depressed now more than ever is because as time passes, technology gets better, and living becomes easier, things are created to make like more convenient, daily tasks more efficient. And because of this, people are left with all this free time. It causes people to overthink, to have more time to realize what the meaning of life is. And when they dont feel like they know the answer, it instantly makes them feel like theyre going nowhere, like theyre a failure. In fact its been proven that in an abundance amount of psychological depression cases, the depression was initiated by a season of boredom. Its a real thing. Its called "The existential vacuum" for anyone curious. and if you want to read more about it and modern decadence overall, i recommend the book called Mans Search For Meaning by Victor frankl.

    I was born in 1995, watching this hit me right in the heart. It literally felt like my entire childhood/adolescence was put onto the big screen. I was raised by a single mom, only difference is that I'm an only child. But nonetheless, all the small moments is what really shook me up. It was just beautiful and imperfect just like life. This movie is a movie that relates to everyone, but if you were born between 1992-1996 this movie will be extremely special and I know I'll never forget when I first watched it in the theater and felt a way that no other movie has ever made me feel. The only other movie that comes close would be The Perks Of Being A Wallflower, but even still it didn't have the human element that this film has. If you think about it, for a certain group of young kids growing up not knowing where they belong in the world, This movie is almost like a gift from Richard Linklater. He's pretty much reminding us that life is a precious thing that we have to cherish with those that we love while also showing us that we're not alone in feeling like we don't know where we belong or what our purpose is. And the best part of it is that it's ok not to know and to be a little scared, that's life in a nutshell. "Life doesn't give you bumpers"

    Bruggio You left this comment because you were fooled by the most ambitious movie gimmick. If this film had the same script and was shot over a normal period of time, it would be atrocious. I would have been able to condone its intentional lack of a plot if there was better writing, true character development (as opposed to mere physical development), and at the very least some depth to the characters. Unfortunately, it had a dearth of all of these necessities. Also, I'm 43. My profile picture is my nephew who died of skin cancer :(

    Haha, yes. Typically when a movie is financed they receive all the money upfront and often the lead actors will get paid prior to making the movie. I think in this case the arrangement with the movie financiers was to receive their film budget in yearly installments so the actors and crew were paid once a year.
