I’m so glad this story has come to light. My daughter started as a security guard at the art gallery in her college campus. She then became very interested in the history of art. She changed her major to Art History and has gone on to curate many events as the Director of an art gallery.

This is great! I had a favorite security guard that I always talked to in Columbus Ohio at The Wexner…I believe her name is TeeTee…she was so sweet!! Shout out to all the fabulous security guards!!✌️😊💜

i talked to a guard at the Chicago Institute one day. I had questions about their job, was glad to hear that they were in different areas all of the time. They really are doing an important job, and just watching some of the folks who come through must be fascinating.

Art is one thing to look at in museums, but curators who are on duty, should get some credit, as well. Great piece!

I know security workers in a few museums and a few libraries who took the jobs because they wanted to be around what they loved and they found inspiration in without having to dedicate years to schooling. I remember visiting the rotating gallery at my favorite museum to realize that one of the security personnel was a featured artist in that season's exhibit. I was 15 at the time. That's when art changed for me. That's when art & expression felt attainable. Two years later, I was painting pedestals for the student art exhibition that would be featuring my own pieces in the very same gallery. Truly, it doesn't matter if some feel this is a "puff" piece... because even if that was the set out intent... it goes so much deeper. It reminds us of the humanity and intellect of those around us who do the work that so often goes unnoticed. And frankly, if you can't see that, you've really missed the mark.

The guards at the Philadelphia Museum of Art were like my tour guides on a visit a few months ago. They were so helpful in directing me to exhibits that would connect with me, our daughter, and her friend. I immediately saw them as uncles and aunts who were helping curate our visit! 😊

I travel all over the US & have visited all the top art museums plus smaller less known ones. I regularly try to speak to the guards. Only once have I ever had a guard that actually cared about the art & wanted to speak on it. Quite honestly, most seem annoyed or uninterested.

So wonderful to see this. Beautiful concept recognizing the guards, the gatekeepers, who spend so much time with the art, I was most fortunate in the 1980's to become aware of the guards and the time they spend with and insight they have into the art. and, I was fortunate enough to spend days interviewing guards at both the National Gallery and the Phillips' Collection in Washington, D.C.., plus the Philadelphia Art Museum. Their insights were profound. They spent time listening to people, looking at the work, being with their own souls, studying the artists who moved them. I photographed each guard with the work they most loved. One day I shall use these interviews in a book...a book about art....in which each guard "guards" a chapter. Back then, the guards at the National were mainly former military who lived within D.C.. The guards at the Phillips' were artists or writers. And, those at the Philadelphia Art Museum were simply from the area. How all these different people found their way into the art was powerful to learn, especially for those never schooled in art.

Mr. Kuhl (spelling according to the captions) has sophisticated taste and understanding. Both the Rothko and Guston paintings are meant to be evocative. While being a bit obtuse to most people. Both artists expressing their own thoughts and emotions, against traditional appeal of realistic, objective art that often appeals to "the masses". Way to go, Sir!

I have always been under the misconception that the security guards were there to protect the artwork and make sure people didn’t get too close or damage it in anyway. I never wanted to distract them from their job.

You’re correct. Leave the guards alone. They aren’t educators , tour guides, babysitters or therapists. If the museum wants educators..the museum should PAY for them.

Exactly. Disrespectful of security guards - they are professionals in their own right. But maybe next time I’m there, one of Boston’s finest 👮‍♀️ will show me around the city.

I stand with the brave security staff attempting to unionize while Bedford weasels his way out of acknowledging the unionization efforts. Funny how this puff piece fails to mention the REAL heroes who are attempting to get better treatment, working conditions, and pay for those who do the work of protecting the institutions most valuable assets. What’s the use of “art for everyone “ if the person standing next to it works full time and lives below the already-sub-human poverty line.

After greeting them, asking "What are your favorite pieces in this room?" would be a question that might get you a very interesting answer.

Guards aren't viewed hospitably because their main words to you "please step back from the art" or hassling you about your coat, etc.

I got too close to Whistlers Mother & found out what the guards are there for .."step back" ... But the guard did say , "it's ok to enjoy it, just step back"

I would disagree. Even owning art is not limited to the rich. There are all kinds of art that the "average" person can buy and enjoy. I have a few original paintings that I LOVE. I have some original ceramic art/craft and jewelry. (bit of a debate in that world about what is labeled "Art" and what is labeled "craft". ) Anyone can MAKE art! Yes, the rich seem to adore that heady world of paintings worth thousands or millions. And, satisfy their egos that way. Some do just buy what they love and that's fine. The Met has become a meeting place of the elite and perhaps superficial. I'll leave them to that. I will enjoy/appreciate the art on my own terms, in my own way. As an old friend of mine, a painter, used to say, "love it. Then figure out WHY you love it. Listen to what the artist is trying to say to you." Isn't that the point of Art?

I have yet to meet a museum guard who wanted to talk about art. // At SFMOMA's special show "The Gnomon" the guards were little foreign-born women who got much pleasure out of barking orders at museum patrons. "You too close!" "Get back!" etc. Unsmiling little women robots who would take on the public for no apparent reason. They provided us all with entertainment at that time.

Nice to see news producers seek out ordinary people who aren’t billionaires or hold political office or work in government. These two have been overlooked by many. I’ve never thought about asking the security guards anything. I know people with university education who work at fast food restaurants. Have an uncle is philosophy professor and he works a job that requires manual labor now because he actually prefers doing so now. Gives him more purpose. Another uncle dated and met his wife online from Mexico. They’re married living in San Diego now. Another aunt is a trans woman who is one of two people I know who legally carry handguns in California. The other person was a truck driver in LA who fired a .45 into the air once to scare off someone who was trying to break into his truck. That person ran off after crapping his pants. My aunt actually keeps a gun in her car. I am considering carrying myself now. LA county has a t month waiting list for carry permits according to the Sheriff of LA County. Another aunt I have owns a motel in Minnesota with her husband. Know of many friends and family friends with stories I have been writing about in moleskins. Have ambition to write several books about American culture. Majored in print journalism and American studies double major. Would start a blog, but I feel blogging and vlogging will get lost. I mean I really don’t like using Google or Facebook. Do use KZread and Twitter and Instagram to follow people. Really think we should try to come together and hear from other viewpoints. Facebook doesn’t allow this. My one grandfather was an atheist Republican and the other was a Roman Catholic Democrat. I am registered Libertarian and since I graduated I have become less religious. I consider myself agonist open to hearing from different people about religion. There is no evidence there isn’t a god. I believe blind faith is arrogant and ignorant. I believe in science mostly. The scientific method. Classical liberalism. The free marketplace of ideas. The uncensored, unregulated, and free internet and press. Don’t believe in direct democracy. Believe we should elect independent people who have worked in fields not related to bureaucracy or military or government or lobbying.

When someone says “exhibit” in reference to a display of art, they put their naivete on full view. They are EXHIBITIONS. Please upgrade your language. Thx
