Art Class Saved This Man's Soul

A community art class may not heal the pain of loss, but for this widower, it was exactly the creative and supportive space he needed to transition into his new normal.
Architecture firm, HCMA, has always been dedicated to creating buildings that reflect the unique lived experiences of the people who use them. Whether it’s a school, community centre, or a library, their structures are designed to be a true reflection of the communities that they serve.
How do you convey the emotional impact of a building? Meet the people who live, work and relax in these spaces. This is the Space Between.
-----
The Space Between is an ongoing series in collaboration with @hcma-architecture-design .

Beautiful. A few years ago, I was hospitalized for a very severe depression. I was immeasurably suicidal with 4 different drugs running through me. Upon release, I took up photography. Every single click of the shutter began to restore my mind and soul one fragment at a time. Today, I take zero medications and have been miraculously restored.

Glad that you are restored, Michael..... now, about the saving of you soul....read the gospel of John in the bible....John 3:16“For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. 17 God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him. 18 “There is no judgment against anyone who believes in him. But anyone who does not believe in him has already been judged for not believing in God’s one and only Son. 19 And the judgment is based on this fact: God’s light came into the world, but people loved the darkness more than the light, for their actions were evil. 20 All who do evil hate the light and refuse to go near it for fear their sins will be exposed. 21 But those who do what is right come to the light so others can see that they are doing what God wants.[fn]”

My dad was an hydraulic engineer. My mom was bedridden with leukemia and my daddy was both dad and mom to his four children. He worked so hard and begun art and stainglass courses in his early 80ties. He was so talented that people begun to buy his artwork. I was so proud of him. I'm an artist and my dad would say that I got my talents from him and I'd tease him by saying:"No daddy. You’ve been watch me create my art all these years so it's me you get your talents from". We were so close. I miss him terribly. Every year I made sure that my dad and I had a holiday together, just father and daughter quality time. I thank God everyday that I have those priceless memories that keep me happy and strong

Here's mine:- [Heb 9:11-14 NLT] 11 So Christ has now become the High Priest over all the good things that have come. He has entered that greater, more perfect Tabernacle in heaven, which was not made by human hands and is not part of this created world. 12 With his own blood--not the blood of goats and calves--he entered the Most Holy Place once for all time and secured our redemption forever. 13 Under the old system, the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a young cow could cleanse people's bodies from ceremonial impurity. 14 Just think how much more the blood of Christ will purify our consciences from sinful deeds so that we can worship the living God. For by the power of the eternal Spirit, Christ offered himself to God as a perfect sacrifice for our sins.

I can only speak for myself. I'm 58 now, I started my Art journey at the age of 11-12 years old. 1977 my mom died of cancer, after years of fighting it off. My brother and I where both traumatized pretty badly. Since this is almost a lifetime in the past, I might not remember everything correctly but that year I went to a different school and found a friend who draw comics. I immediately picked this up and made it my own. It never was more than a hobby, but if I now go though my old drawings, I feel the peace and quietness of those long afternoons sitting at the kitchen table, filling page after page with the adventure's of the character I created. My mind was at rest in those moments and I think this was my way of handling the harsh truth that my mom was gone forever. I also learned how to be alone without getting lost in loneliness. I'm still do drawings and paintings and it makes me happy to do it. Doing Art can help healing wounds, I'm pretty positive about that!

I saw your post and it mirrors my experience, I'm 58, lost my mum in 1978, and I've had a lifetime of depression and anxiety. Only in the last few months has a mental health nurse said I need grief counselling. I've been painting for a little over a year, and wish I'd been doing it years ago, it's a new passion for me. July 2023 I fell and broke 2 bones in my dominant right hand wrist. All my 54 years, I'd never broken a bone in my life. I didn't realize while in cast you need to move your fingers. I had surgery for one bone but being in the cast longer than normal, my fingers became very very stiff. That was worse than the broken bone. I got very, very depressed and suicidal. I've made crafts since 12 yrs old. I made rosaries and sold them. I sold half of my art supplies and gave a friend the rest. My hand is getting a little better. Then I finally wanted to create art again. I just can't help it. I guess it's just in my genes. I purchased more items and started it again. I don't know if I can make a rosary yet having to bend chains but I'll give it a try. Thank you for posting this. I wish the story were longer and showed more of you creating your art.

When you’re grieving one of the hardest things to do is to pick up some thing new and take your already fragile self into a situation where you might feel vulnerable yet when you create something, when you take that time to create something, you lose yourself in the art and it gives your mind a rest from the grieving. I grew up in a family of artists, one sisters became a tattoo artist (owning her own shop for years) and the other sister is an oil painter. My dad was a draftsmen, and my mother loved drawing as well. I could only draw stick figures. Even though I had been doing sewing and woodworking for 40 years, I never considered myself an artist, because I couldn’t draw (like them). In the last 6 months, I have really enjoyed the variety of painting, poetry and collage classes I have taken at the senior center. Blank pages have gotten way less intimidating.

@@kahanipictures I wish these stories were turned into movies. I saw a story about a Chinese family in the U.S. who back in the 40s couldn't find anyone to rent from due to racism Finally A black family rented a house to them. When the Chinese family started a business and became wealthy they donated over a million dollars to the black community These families stayed friend for a lifetime. That would be a great movie!

Yes it does heal, my little pom pom died @12 years old three years ago.she was my emotional support 🐕 to get me through a horrible marriage that I'm still in.. I have now on my #5 wall mural in my fifth wheel RV. I've never put paint on a canvas until recently. I love what comes out of a hurting soul. Must have been the true beginning of it all.

You have a gift Jim. My favourite is at 1:12 , sun & trees? Nothing greater than support and company, of your fellow beings, inspiring peace, joy and creativity. I wish there were community "art classes" where I live. The ones people offer are too expensive. God Bless

Recreation departments and community colleges usually have art programs. There are often art associations or museums with programs. If not, do it on your own. if not art, find another activity or hobby.
