You don't need to do 28h to be good, you need to have fun. But if you want to be the best, you are competing with people who are breathing to do the thing they love. And they are spending 2x the time, so they are getting better much faster. The thing is, must things are not a competition... So have fun.

Thank you for formulating the “learning with the intention to teach” principle. I have been doing it so without realizing since my teenage years in at least three different fields, and was a quick learner precisely because of this outlook. Moreover, I noticed time and time again that people who were trying to give meaningful feedback progressed much faster than those who did not.

I just have to say ever since I subscribed my art has become almost unrecognizable to myself (in a good way). I have improved in a way that I never thought possible. I gave up art and illustration years ago because I truly believed I was untalented and had limited potential. I didn't realize just how much technique, persistence, practice, and hard work was involved, and I underestimated the importance of getting down the fundamentals. I have you to thank for my progress lately! The education on KZread art school has gotten me farther than years of college 😊 I'll pay the class fee once again!

Me too!, been struggling to make my anatomy look more natural & attractive and less flat & boring. Been sort of slowly decreasing my motivation of drawing each day. I Hope i'll soon get better at it

I wouldn't say that limiting the art you look at isn't the best way to help motivation. You shouldn't compare yourself to other artists. The trick is compare yourself to your old self. Compare what you drew today to something you drew 3 months ago. That way you should see the improvement you have made and THAT is very motivating.

It’s interesting that inefficiency can lead to faster progress. Draw on paper one day, Fresco on iPad the next, spray paint on a board the next, get some new watercolor brushes (using pinstriping brushes atm. Not meant for watercolor but the fluidity when painting curved lines feels awesome), model in 3D, go outside and paint the tress, go to the subway just to draw people, take a life drawing class, learn calligraphy… The point of the rant is people “quit” because (as Marc mentioned) they forget to have fun. Highly suggest not concerning yourself with likes online… Sinix calls it “artsploration”. If you can’t enjoy scribbling on the nearest piece of paper just for the fun of it… you probably need to take a step back from worrying what people think.

@@CinzaChumbo Warms my heart to hear. I learned as an adult so I was hyper critical about my results until I started considering my files and sketchbooks disposable. I’ve progressed much much faster in the last two years just by keeping a, “I’m doing it for me” mentality. It becomes a fidget habit where you’re uncomfortable without a pencil. Hope the best for you.

That stopping while you're having fun tip is so helpful for making a positive association with your art, and makes you want to keep coming back to do more. Sometimes I draw in between rounds/loading screens of playing video games with friends, which ironically because I keep interrupting my drawing process, it makes me want to go back to working on the drawing even more than playing the game. It makes me place drawing on a higher scale of having fun than video games. It also conveniently makes me not look at the drawing for 10 odd minutes, so when I look back at it, I have an easier time spotting things I need to fix.

Tbh looking at better people encourages me to be better, it motivates me because I notice my growth and I’m closer to it everyday.

the point about walking away when youre frustrated makes SO much sense. Ive always had a bad feeling about doing art because i always stop it when i get frustrated. you truly are putting the best information and quality advice out there, never stop pls

For the last tip, that's how I approached learning Japanese. In fact I created a group specifically to teach japanese despite still being at intermediate level : because it then forces me to dive deep into every possible resources I can find about each grammar point in order to give the most accurate lesson I can while minimizing errors. And I learn a lot more than if I were just learning for myself and just taking the first website I could find

Same! I always had issues with using and remembering Japanese particles, but this summer I participated in a uni program where I had to develop a game that would teach/help beginner students remember a grammatical concept. I chose particles and, after completing my game, I never misuse or struggle with them.

Thanks. Felt suicidal before watching this. In danger of losing my job, finances are shot to shit, girlfriend is jobless, mom needs to find a new place within 2 months and is super depressed, dad is starting to develop dementia and needs to be put into a nursing home, one aunt's heart is giving her more and more issues, other aunt and her family is being evicted and needs a new place to stay at the end of the month, best friend discovered a large tumor in her stomach yesterday and had to go to the hospital to get it removed tomorrow, my art I want to get better in sucks. It's all just too much.....

7:39 fun fact about myself: i have to do the opposite of this tip, cuz when i comepare my art with bad art i get demoralized because i think its equally as bad, but when i compare my art with art from professionals i get angry and strive to be better at art out of spite

I follow several artists I admire, so I ALWAYS end up comparing myself to them. When my art doesn't turn out like how theirs do, I get frustrated and quit. I've stopped a few too many times, and doing things in art I used to enjoy now feels like a chore. Then when I finally finish the piece, I find myself dissatisfied with it because it doesn't look like my idol's, and I start fixating on the flaws instead of the good aspects. So now my confidence in art isn't nearly as strong as it used to be. When I first started taking my art seriously, I didn't look at nearly as much art as I do now and I had SO much fun doing it. It made me improve so incredibly fast, but now, I've found myself in a funk. That tip to stop drawing when you're having fun honestly blew my mind, because I never thought about how it would make me associate art with having fun. I think I'm gonna start doing that from now on, and I'm definitely gonna limit the amount of art I look at too. I hope by doing this, I can start to feel satisfied with my art again.

Ending your session while having fun will actually boost your productivity by a lot. That's something I always felt but never applied like this. I'm going to start using it, especially when I start getting frustrated.

For me, sometimes when I do bad at something and leave it in a sour mood, my brain goes into a,"I must restore my honor try again" mode. When it does all I get for the next few hours is a blast of ideas to try next time, or, hyperfocus to bash my head until I break a wall. That's how I learned drawing, also having good art friends helps A LOT. As a second opinion they can see flaws that your brain has trained not to see. In conclusion, draw smarter not harder. I.e. don't learn art like a med student, by doing so you'll rob yourself of the fun of drawing, which makes it so much easier to do. This is something my friend did and he did not learn nor had as much as I was having, he then fell off in skill. So, have fun, life is short.

It's great advice: Have a goal. Most of the academies nowadays aim to educate you to become a professional... and get a job. Marc makes the observation that you find people who share your passion for drawing. From my experience, this is very difficult, because when you prioritize your livelihood, the other cartoonists become competition. The bad part will be there. And ironically it is more difficult to deal with the social part than the discipline of drawing (for me). What Marc says is great advice, you just have to take adversities into account, and be aware that you may not always be able to give free rein to your creativity in optimal conditions. Greetings.

I love and follow your youtube videos! They are great! Youre one of the best teacher and THE ACTUAL MENTAL TEACHER for art!

This were 11 minutes and 25 sec of pure gold. You purified and gave those lessons in a warm and direct way, making us feel the need to take action while listening. I also resonated with some of those lessons, particularly the "learn as you would teach" cause this was a mindset i organically developed over the years but never heard off it or saw it being discussed in media like "don't burn out" which is an advice sometimes gets tiring or obvious because of how much its shared; Of course, I'm not saying 'don't burn out' its a bad lesson but it felt like a trigger warning of your video being just the same old top 3 lessons applied to every field, but i've been a subscriber for 2 years and I know you always care about truly teaching, so i kept watching and listening to you talk about "obvious" lessons but in a personal and caring way, followed with some more fresher lessons/mindsets was truly amazing. 10/10 video Marc.

That last tip reminds me of something I learned about learning when I was learning to code... That's a mouthful. To check whether you understand something is to explain it in simple terms to someone or something else assuming that they know absolutely nothing about it, could be a person, could be a rubber duck. I've noticed that I sometimes have micro conversations with myself, mostly pondering and wondering about things I'm trying to learn about and trying to see things from multiple POVs. However, as with everything you should try to get other people's inputs as to avoid coming to a false conclusion or solidifying one. Excellent video, learning is a skill one should always strive to improve.

Tip number 4 really hit me. I've recently gotten into learning art seriously while self learning since June or so and I'd be lying if I said I just had moments that was getting envious or even starting hating art couple of days because what I put out barely felt like it scratched the bars I was trying to reach even after trying to do something with all my effort. But I've come to realize and accept the fact that what I've also put into my overall journey is ultimately a fraction of the effort that the artists I'm into have put into their journeys. Sometimes you really just need videos like these to get people out of their ruts and get back into grind.

I totally relate. I'd been learning in the past by just following what I wanted to do next, but in June started writing down a large list of things I wanted to learn and improve at. When I'm taking months to finish just one thing on that list it's scary to think how I've barely made a dent in all there is left to learn! It's also exciting though, since I guess I'll never run out of material to play with in my drawings.

Absolutely. I want to eventually reach the level of Christophe Young or Jin Kwang Park (for example; search them up on Artstation, as they are phenomenal artists). Yet, I myself have only extremely recently begun my serious art journey in want to create my own brand, identity and world as a freelance character illustrator and concept artist (much like Rossdraws and others). By recent, I mean 3 months at most. I'm 21, and I keep comparing myself to the aforementioned artists who have 5-10 years experience already, if not more. I beat myself up for not starting seriously in high school or before like they did, and always feel like I've started late or already missed my chance to reach their level. Same with always hearing that these massively skilled artists put 8-12 hours a day into their self-teaching for art, which always makes me feel like I'm never doing enough (even though school is nothing but art for 7 hours a day, lol; granted, I have no interest in animation anymore, so the latter half of my 7 1/2 month program has been rough). Yet, in spite of all of that, I can't deny that I've grown in these past three months exponentially. My classmates in my 2D animation and illustration course have flat out told me that they are intimidated by my growth in 3 months, wherein I have matched their level even though some of them have been wanting to do it for nearly a decade and have practiced as such. I constantly take images of things that inspire me and do master studies of my favourite artists on the side as well. Ultimately, though. Truth be told, my ass being lit on fire to this degree for the first time in my life, is proof to me that I want it. Badly. And I also have to remind myself that these artists all started somewhere, regardless of age, culture or anything in between. Even though I'm Canadian, born and raised, I have far more interest in East Asian art styles and subjects, hence why I follow many Japanese and South Korean artists, especially on the topic of mechs, cyberpunk and biomechanical (all character artists/designers). I have no doubt that I will achieve the same level of those artists myself someday. Hell, maybe one day I'll have my own brand, merch and the whole sort, just like Rossdraws, Gharliera, or Mark here. @@jamfilledjars Ah man I've completely been feeling that part about not "doing enough" as well. I could study from anywhere from 2-3 hours, do a whole mannequin practice, draw lines, practice shading but my mind just never really knows when it's "enough". I'm only 24 this year so not too old not too young but man does it feel ever so frustrating to get into art. You follow a guide here and there, get some tutorials yet for some reason you just have that one tiny line or that slight curve you somehow miss or do incorrectly that changes everything. I get deflated, pissed even that I'm trying to follow a tutorial/guide to a tee but the difference still feels vastly different even if it's just a 'basic' guide on anatomy. But the strange thing that happens is given another couple of days, a week even your mind suddenly just lets things 'click' as they simmer down. Art/illustrations is definitely something I hope I can keep the momentum of learning cause it's definitely been the only thing that I feel like I *want* to learn, I want to learn passionately despite how much I've just been feeling doubtful about in my current skill. I'm very much 99% more anime inspired but I'd definitely wanna try delving into more stuff like mechs and detailed backgrounds too eventually. It really doesn't help that my bar just like yours feels exceptionally high. I really love works from Rella, Yamiluna, Recneps-Sais because, I'm still really into vocaloid but I remember just being mesmerized by some of their art years ago. I'd really recommend checking out Rella's Pixiv page too because it's actually an incredibly rare way to see where someone's art journey was 10 years ago and where it is today. Even seeing the difference between 2011 and 2014 illustrations already feels massive. At least a month in I can feel like I can actually get bits and grasps of simpler art but stuff with complex lighting like that? Still gonna feel like a year or two off from fully comprehending. Hope anyone reading still continues their art journey

I became friends with very good artists a few yeats ago, I was a rookie. My goal at the time was to become better/to their level as fast as I could, while also doing what I love and proggressively I think I achieved it, and I was constantly dropping art, exploring environments, taking things I love from diff artstyles and implementing those on my own (example being I LOVE shiny/poppy looking pieces) having a set goal, achieving it and tyen moving onto the next phase by setting a new goal is indeed a very important art piece of advice

Ngl man your videos are genuinely helpful, like I’m sure you get tons of comments like this but it’s like having the art teacher I never got to have in high school, the poor way of teaching in my art class is one of the reasons I dropped out, but after 3-4 short 10min videos from you my art is 10000x better than what a year in that silly art class would do, like after watching one of your shading Color theory tutorials it’s like someone took a key and unlocked that side of my mind, anyways long ass comment doubt anyone will read BUT I’m eternally grateful for you sharing your knowledge is such a easily digestible way

"Stop working when you're having a good time..." - wish I could implement this in my work life too - sometimes you get hit with changes to a project at 16:50, then it's all I think about till the next day, and personal art just takes a backseat where it's been for years T____T

I really really like that last tip. Today I was trying to paint reflective objects and it didn't work out very well. Now, I imagined that I was learning to teach it. If I was, I'd delve into the fundamentals of shiny objects and why there shiny, how they're affected by other lights etc. Intense stuff. I'd also consider questions my student would ask. Thinking this way is going to help me break down artists I like more. The feyman technique is very effective. Thnx Marc ❤

I am _extremely_ guilty of the leaving on a negative note, and following too many professional, elite artists with 5-10 years of experience over me and comparing myself to them. I definitely think I should take a break from social media for a while to just focus on my studies and own art (I'm 21 and only started to take my art studies seriously 3 months ago), while occasionally looking at the elites for inspiration, knowledge and advice on the occasion. As for negative notes, I'll keep that in mind for next time: if I find myself feeling negative during a piece, I'll switch to working on something I enjoy and leave on that note instead. Once again, wonderful advice for free.

Great pro tips. I’m definitely internalizing #’s 4 and 6 right now. Looking for good brain hacks now that I’m thinking in terms of finishing full art pieces as opposed to focusing on learning separate fundamentals in short bursts.

That was some really good information. Especially when you brought up the example of reading a book but then the next day you're scheduled to have a ted talk about it in front of millions of people even the government. That's gonna help me explain things better

The State of mind to draw, wow... this is so good! Add this: on hard things to do, is a : leave while you are winning. Is a powerful advice, because you can have a time to enjoy of a video game (but not too much), and decided to spend time because you enjoy it. But if you are not enjoying your time, then is a waste of time. Same is applicable here. OR do not engage into a work because you need it, but instead, because you enjoy it. That way, you do a something you enjoy while getting pay to do it.

I've been doing your advice and I can't tell what I am now, the method of science of learning it helps me alot faster than spending hours of drawing

This video makes a lot of sense, and I wrote down the bullet points and tried to keep up with the info but this video feels very dense with info for its runtime, for me at least, which leads me to this. Possible excuse or possible frustration incoming but all of your videos give me genuinely good advice, yet I come out of them feeling more panicked or stressed than informed. My mindset has been very bad in art for a very long time because I self taught to a point before various learning disabilities have made the various steps of learning so, so difficult. Retaining information for art in general has become so difficult, making my hands do anything close to it has been impossible at times and it just has drained my enjoyment out of a hobby I used to spend hours and hours on each day. My mindset feels so defeated lately that I feel like my general understanding of anatomy has gotten much worse and... Honestly, maybe I just wanted to get this out of my system in a place where somebody was capable of pointing me in a direction because I have had none for what feels like years.

Always hoarding more pics and info and just trying to brain everything etc.. while avoiding doing things in practice - what is what i actually should focus on to get progress. This AuDHDer will try to break harming habits and focus on good feels and actually doing things that get me forward💪😤 And need to really write down that goal since memory bad - i guess it could be about that i want to be in a place where i can start to make art that conveys my ideas well and beautifully and have more intuitive grasp of things so it's easier on brain & can focus more in certain creative stuff + just fall in love with the process again❤

My goal is to be able to be professional while not doing commissions and working at my own speed. I'm disabled so I can't be reliable when it comes to due dates same it takes me longer to make art than it does most people. I also really want to sell my favorite piece but it's going to be priced at $500 and I know people are super harsh when it comes to more expensive art. I know $500 isn't super expensive but it is not expensive than anything else I've ever made.

Its a good advice step by step how to become a successful artist. But the one with social media that do make a lot of sense because I think people do that so they try to become the best with out not taking there time and enjoying the art journey. I think.

I always quit drawing when I don't know how to advance because I cannot wait to see how different my art will look from a different perspective.

I’ll add a couple more from my own experience Focus on learning skills that are relevant to the type of art you want to do. For example, if you want to do black and white manga style, don’t worry about learning color, focus on hatching, stippling, and maybe screen tone. You can learn color later but outside of covers mangaka don’t really color. You’ll improve faster if you narrow your focus on what you’re learning to what’s absolutely necessary. It’s ok to cut corners if it helps workflow. Pros trace poses and hands all the time. They also use prepared assets. Mangaka will edit photos to grayscale for backgrounds. Obviously you should practice these things in order to be able to draw them yourself, but if trying to get the hand pose right results in you becoming frustrated and prevents you from actually finishing your art, then just trace from a photo or reference sheet and move on. You can practice drawing 500 hands later, so do what’s necessary to finish art now.

Even better, compare yourself to your prior self. My favorite quote ever is: "there is nothing noble in trying to be superior to your fellow man. Nobility is trying to be superior to your former self."
