Not necessarily, for example, in music this concept doesn't hold up well, you can have a song with a weak song form and weak melody and harmony, but if the groove is strong enough it will salvage the whole song, the same is probably true for art too, if the overall structure is strong the details don't matter as much.

“Use your favorites to boost your weaknesses” is such a good piece of advice. I hated doing backgrounds when drawing my characters and so I decided to make creating believable spaces for my senior year of art my focus. It was a fun challenge because I used my two favorite characters to base the surroundings on (they’re the main characters of a graphic novel I’ve been working on) I did a total of 6 paintings/drawings and tackled a specific part of the background to just keep things fresh and with the last _complete_ drawing, I used all of the lessons I had learned from the previous pieces to create the one drawing I am most proud of. Looking back at the first and last “picture book” paintings (that’s what my teacher and I called the non-comic pages) makes me feel so good about what I achieved in just 7 months It also made me realize that I’m actually capable of doing things on my own and motivating myself. It also made me realize how much I love those two characters and pushed me even further to wrote their story

Hey, you, random stranger. I don't know who you are, what you're going through, or what kind of day you're having. I don't even know your name. I don't know much about you at all, but what I do know is that you are absolutely amazing. You're doing great today. You don't need to be perfect, you're already doing your best. You're probably going through a lot right now, and that's understandable. The world is breaking, I know, but you can do this. You've been doing really well lately! You can make it, I promise. You're gonna be okay. Everything is gonna be okay. Take a deep breath, go make yourself a hot cup of coffee, or some hot chocolate, or maybe even some tea. Grab a book, or look something up to read. Give yourself a break, you deserve it. It doesn't make you selfish to have some alone time, if anything it makes you less selfish. Take care of yourself, because you matter. Everything is gonna be fine. Take a warm bath, read a book, make yourself a good meal, and remember that you matter. If you're an artist, your art is absolutely beautiful. Keep going! If you're a musician, you're music sounds amazing! If you're a writer, the things you write are absolutely wonderful! If you're an editor (pictures, videos, ect.), your edits are awesome! If you're any other kind of creator, your creations are great! If you do something outside of art, it's still amazing! You're doing great, I promise! Feel free to vent in the replies if need-be, I'll be here to listen!

Best art advise I got is that you can't just sit there and complain that your bad at art without acting upon what you think your bad at and try to improve on it it's helped me lot with motivation and made me realize that hey... Instead of just saying bad which is incredibly vague and overly just a wrong form of self observation you should question yourself on what you think your bad at and improve upon those aspects. That's just helped me quite a bit because yeah at the end of the day it's helped my big time with working on my flaws and well I have expanded outwards in my art because of thinking instead of me just being bad I think what do I think I'm bad at what's the specific thing that I feel I'm weak at. Ik this was just me sharing what really made me pop off and love art I've been doing it seriously as a hobby ever since I understood that info hope it helps some who the whole I'm not good enough issue.

The "secret sketchbook" tip and removing your mind from likes and dislikes is a wonderful idea. I started to really think about that just the other day when I realized I still love posting to my reblogging tumblr blog even though I've stayed at 2 followers for over half a year. Why do I still enjoy it? Because it's not for other people, although it's always cool when I get random likes on a post there. But that's not the intention. I want to keep that mentality for my other accounts, too.

Okay Lavender. thank you. Thank you thank you thank you. I really needed to hear... Pretty much all of this. Both this one and the bad art advice one, too. I have been in a severe art slump for the past few years (coming up on a decade) because my medical-based education has literally ate up most of my time. When I'm not doing school, I am working my medical-based job and cramming creative writing into my lunch breaks so I don't dive into full-blown depression from lack of fun (the creative writing part regularly goes on haitus for months at a time) I have been trying to get back into visual art for a few years now and I have slowly started to hate it. Not the viewing-- the doing. I keep looking at art of my friends who I used to draw alongside (still friends with) and they are all really really good (they've been at it while I have not), while my art is now realistic, but hard, static and flat. My perfectionism leads me to the point that I haven't completed a piece in... over 5 years because I get so frustrated with it that I have to put it aside or I'll stress delete. The past year or so has put me in a deep depression with my art because I feel like I've lost any talent I've ever had and that any skills I built up as a child/teen are so atrophied that they pretty much aren't there. There has been dozens (maybe even hundreds) of times where I feel like visual art just isn't something I can do and that I'll never get back what I had, but the logic tells me that it's a skill and it's something I can do if I just try. Despite logic, the fear still resides. If I sit back and really look at it, it's not the art that I hate. What I resent (not hate) is the fact that I've lost the joy and excitement drawing and visual art once gave me. I genuinely miss it and I'm terrified that I'll never get it back. Lately I have been going to other artists and asking those classic questions "how do I get better?" and I am hearing " just practice" "see things in 3D" "Don't stress over what can't be seen" "not everything has to be perfect". It doesn't help and, really, it just frustrates me more and makes me want to quit more. Then the few people who are willing to give me advice stop (sans one, who really gave me a hard tongue lashing/bludgeoning over respect and perseverance). Now I am a mature adult trying to figure out how to do it again with a hilariously unbalanced toolset. I understand that I need to start from square one because my skills are more or less foundationless, so I have been perusing the interwebs in an attempt to gain not only inspiration, but motivation. I found some here. Over the two part series on this, I'm pretty sure I cried at least 6 times, but this part definitely had me crying the most. Your words are incredibly compassionate, inspirational, and are exactly what I needed to hear. I'm trying my best to remove myself from thoughts like "I've studied (insert art-based subject here) for so long (in the past), so I should be better at it. What's wrong with me?" and instead treat myself like an absolute newbie. Even if I still have some skills tucked away (somehow), I shouldn't rely on them and treat them supplementary perks. Thank you for giving me motivation to pick up a pencil again. Also, thank you for encouraging me to try and ease up on the anatomy and light physics. More than anything, thank you for indirectly telling me to calm down and just enjoy it. It doesn't have to be perfect and it's okay if there are weak parts. Just do it. TLDR: Thank you Lavendertowne for all the warm vibes and good insight (both indirect and direct). I have struggled a lot with art and you are helping me motivate myself to start learning visual art again. Thank you again!

I know this is a joke but genuinely think about what you love about drawing hair and clothes? Is it the colors? Is it the flowy lines? You try and personalise the clothes to a character right? Try and personalise the back rounds, draw them like you make an outfit, look at reference's, experiment with different ways to make a background. As for shading, Pick a color, try shading it. Pick out the things you don't like about it. Wright down your process. Find were do you think it went wrong, play with colors and layers. Look at other's art work and pick out things you like, try to figure out how they did it. Look at other references. Practice isn't going to help of you have no direction, But i hope this helps!

@@timlovesfrogs3771 I don't like drawing hair and clothes, it's just easier than drawing complex things like eyes. I can draw backgrounds sometimes, but I can't get it to look realistic because the character ends up looking huge compared to the trees and I can't draw perspective so it looks like a kid drew it. I can't shade because I don't know where the shading's supposed to go and how much.

If I could tack on a piece of advice that I’ve been following myself recently: if you start to feel burnt out and have all these ideas, reduce your art to a rougher, faster version, like a rough sketch or very simple style. Make your art simple enough to show the ideas you want to get across, and then just move on to the next. Sometimes we overwhelm ourselves by needing to fully render a drawing, and burn ourselves out on an idea before we get there. If you feel comfortable to going further or rendering, do it once you have everything down, but give yourself some time between the sketching and the rendering.

Im trying to find my style right now, and some things I do is take characters from cartoons I like (I take ones from cartoons I like so I know different angles and know the character well) Then draw the character from scratch right next to a photo of the character I chose. This can help people find Their style (like me) and also help people after they find their style, be able to customize it a bit more to differ from the original cartoon.

Sadly the first thing I don't get a lot people always try to focus on the good part of my art when I'm genuinely trying to get some constructive criticism and they say I only see what's wrong because it's my art or I'm an artist or they think I'm tryna tear myself down
