Arsenal vs Bayern Munich in the Champions League and Gabriel picks up the ball from a goal kick inside his penalty area. The referee waved play on but should this have been a penalty kick?

gab marcotti ignores the _real_ reason for rules: *they define the game.* lol, in soccer you cannot handle the ball, and if you do so in the penalty box, it's a penalty kick! absolutely should have been a penalty, and i would be extremely displeased to see that referee in charge again in an important match. a professional soccer player has no reason whatsoever to handle that ball, even if they incorrectly think it's currently not-in-pay. in fact, i have never even seen another player do such a stupid thing, ever. at least bayern advances, in the end the sporting universe corrected the dumb no-decision.

It was so strange and I can't remember seeing such a situation. It's definitely a handball. At the youth level, I understand letting it ride. At the Champions League level, I think you have to follow the laws and give a penalty. As @fishy6584 says below, maybe Gabriel didn't hear the whistle. We'll never know for sure. I agree with you though, it should have been a penalty.

In my opinion context plays a big part in the decision which should be made. Gabriel doesn't seem to be looking at the referee and the Emirates was as loud as its been in a long time (understandable considering what the game means to the fans after being out of the champions league for so long). Gabriel may not have heard the whistle therefore I think giving a penalty would be really harsh. I think based on this context the referee was correct to not give a penalty.

That's possible, and in such a case it feels wrong if he is punished for not hearing the whistle. But I'm not sure about that. We'll never know though. Either way it's a mistake and one Arsenal got away with, at least for the evening. Now they're out it doesn't matter. But it's fascinating to see how much this divides people.
