Katie Cassidy (Arrow, Supernatural) joins us this week and reflects on how her crazy upbringing molded her to become independent and how difficult this is when peers see it as being standoffish.
Katie shares her struggle to make it on her own at a very young age, despite what some would assume she was given based on her family name.
We also share stories of getting bullied in our childhood, we share reflections on loved ones lost, and Katie dishes on some BTS Arrow stories.

    I LOVED her as Ruby in Supernatural. I've had this love hate thing with Arrow. I'll watch it for a while, then they do something like this that pisses me off, then I'd stop watching, then go back to it. Then rinse, wash, and repeat.

    Katie Cassidy as your guest just awesome. She was amazing as Black Siren during season 5 and onwards with Arrow. Of course her guest starring debut in the Flash really launched the character so well. Her character in Taken film was just a sad demise. Her family is an acting dynasty. Her uncle Patrick Cassidy also guest starred in Smallville season 2 and guest starred in Lois and Clark The New Adventures of Superman as Lex Luthor Clone. David Cassidy guest starring in the original Flash as the Mirror Master in the 90's show was great.

    And her character in the 2010 Nightmare on Elm Street remake Kris should have been the protagonist going up against Freddy because Rooney Mara's performance as Nancy sucked. Mara not liking the horror genre was no excuse for giving a bad performance.

    They started pandering to the Olicity cult. The shippers also started saying she only got the role of Laurel by sleeping with someone on the show because they resented the fact that Laurel was a better more popular character than Felicity. They also couldn't project their "nerdy girl gets rich good looking guy" fantasies onto the character of Laurel like they could Felicity.

  • @fiction5559

    @fiction5559

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@Xehanort10 I wasn't even that big of a Laurel fan on the show (writing's fault, not Katie's), but Felicity in Seasons 3-5 was just the worst and yeah, the pandering to the Olicity cult was terrible. It damaged not just Laurel, but quite a few more female characters in Arrow- Sara, Helena, to name a few, since Oliver's relationship with Sara was the best in the show, and him and Laurel could have been good if the writers hadn't botched it for Olicity. Sucks what was done to her, and I didn't like their treatment of Black Siren either. In Season 4, I was finally liking Laurel as a character, then they killed her off.

  • @Xehanort10

    @Xehanort10

    @@fiction5559 Season 3 and 4 with a better trained Laurel and Felicity getting stabbed with an arrow by Darhk. Oh and also no retconning Oliver into meaning it when he said he loved Felicity because at the end of Season 2 he only said that so she could get close enough to inject Slade with the Mirakuru cure. He only saw Felicity as a friend and teammate until the showrunners caved in to shippers. I liked Oliver and Sara's relationship as well.

  • @fiction5559

    @fiction5559

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@Xehanort10 No kidding, I'd be fine with it. Though for Felicity, I'm imagining no one dies at prison, and Felicity is killed off by Darkh's men wherever she is as a message to Oliver's team. And yeah, we don't need that retcon. My personal headcanon is that Oliver was hurting after Sara left for the League (which was just OOC of her since she was willing to kill herself few episodes ago instead of returning, it was done so she doesn't stand in Olicity's way of course), and so he transferred his feelings for Sara into Felicity to ease the hurt, but he never loved her, and she only loved a fantasy version of him she had in her head, not the real person.

    You figure it out by making it a natural habit not to swear in front of your Dad. Eventually it sinks in, although I didn't have to deal with a pastor like you do. If your Dad has a problem with you swearing elsewhere (under the right circumstances) then that's his problem, not yours. There's nothing wrong with cutting back though, especially if you feel you swear too much for your personal liking. :-)

    I was bullied too grade 7 to 11. Two girls threatened me a few times it was hard at times. I had to defend myself in grade 11, thus the 1 girl left me alone afterwards. And the second dropped out. I too was one that kept to myself and had a few friends I hang out with most times. Than I found my escape, the Wonderful World of Purebred Dogs and K9 Sports. Horse backriding was also a huge thing to help me. And today my dogs are my passion, my life. Listening to Katie deal with bullies, was encouraging, that we all have had someone Bully at us at some point in life or another. Great to hear how she dealt with life in front of her. Great episode again guys, thanks.

    I know Katie from Supernatural. Her character made me mad, but she was supposed to, so she did a good job. ;) I almost forgot about Taken! I'm glad you talked a little about that one. So cool she had a good experience with Liam. He always seems like a good guy. and Katie IS a great actor. I also knew she was in Arrow, from my sister who watches. These were touching stories. It's weird, in a good way, to see these sides of actors. You see how REAL they are...vulnerable. Amazing. Thank you. Also, I wanted to tell you, when you were talking about your dog in the beginning...I resonated with that. We lost our amazing cat, Apollo, of 17 years, in 2019. The situation was kind of similar to yours. It was the last 4 days we had him that it was a real struggle and we decided to put him down, with the vet's agreeance as well. I'm going to pray for you and your dog.

But of course, like for me, and so many others, my love for you comes from your tenure with Smallville....(You will always be the Villain of the story)...and While Gene Hackman will always be my First Lex, with Clancy Brown being the voice in my head for Lex....you made that character so real, so human, and so badass. I know I have said all of this to you before...but man, I really am enjoying these episodes....so much so, it has been a huge inspiration for me. I’ve had to put down 2 dogs (they were old and you’ll know when it’s time) and I have an elderly dog currently who’s 14-15 years old who we may have to make that decision soon. It’s never easy. ♥️* Now back to listening to the rest of the podcast...

    I was watching an episode of Bewitched (from the 60s) one day and her grand father was a guest star, and I couldn't believe how much she looks like him, especially the smile ! At first I was thinking where did I see that actor before? and then I remembered he was Jack Cassidy, I remembered him because of how much she looks like him, and then that he was in an episode of The Mary Tyler Moore Show as Ted Baxter's brother

    Michael, tell Katie that I loved her even before this...but I respect her even more now. She is real! She is a light, her smile makes her a light to others knowing what she has been through; being bullied I know all too well. I was bullied through middle school and high school. I learned to laugh at the jokes those bullies would direct towards me and they then immediately asked me why I was laughing because of the fact they were making fun of me...I said because it was funny. You have to look at those kinds of things objectively and not let them get to you, because that is the end game of that bully, to make themselves feel better. I learned how to shrug off a bully and learned to laugh at myself. To this day, I enjoy making people smile and laugh even if it’s at my expense, because bringing someone laughter and a smile to brighten their day can make a difference in their life. My inspiration has come from Patch Adams. No matter if you are in a bad mood or you are going through something, allowing someone time by themselves is good, and in due time giving them a reason to smile is always a plus. Thanks for your stories, Katie. Be true to yourself.

    Insightful episode!!! Sorry to hear about your dog! One of the most emotionally draining things I ever had to do was dig a grave and bury the family dog. Dogs become more than pets! Your guest is great, I love a person who is a straight shooter and who is blunt and to the point. I am not an extrovert people person either, and can relate to her frustration with people and why they don't understand that there is nothing wrong with sitting alone or being by yourself. Other than not having any talent. The other reason I am glad that I am not famous is I couldn't deal with the crazy, insensitive and never ceasing demands of my time or attention. Ms. Cassidy indicated that she is empathic and can feel the emotions of others, and their effect on her isn't always positive and can be draining and soul crushing. She does what is best for her and people can suck it. I love it!!! Keep up the great work!!

    Hey Michael, I can totally relate as a pet parent right now because my pup is going through the same thing. My old pupper is 14 and he's got a degenerative disease where he's slowly losing sensation in his hind legs and will slowly become paralyzed. He's also had hìp dysplasia for a number or years however we've given him metacam and it's helped him a lot. The scaryist thing though was watching him go through two bad bouts of Old Dog syndrome (that's actually what it's called) which is like a mini stroke/ bad virtigo in dogs. It was really upsetting because he was too nauscious to eat and you know what they say about old dogs who won't eat. Especially considering food is his biggest joy in life. But also we could tell how confused and frustrated he was by the situation and we couldn't explain it to him. He eventually recovered from it but he suddenly began to develop the degenerative disease right after so it was a lot for us. My old pupper is a 14 year old German Shepherd Husky mix and he's around 85 pounds so it was a lot to handle when his hind legs started to give out. I want to offer you words of encouragement though: DON'T GIVE UP ON HIM! It took a lot of work but my pupper is a stubborn fighter and we figured out what worked best. For when your dog won't eat: . Try a new kibble . Try a new wet food . Mix dry and wet food . Mix water with dry kibble (sometimes it's hard for old dogs to swallow because it's too dry . Hold up the bowl to their mouths at a tilted angle. This was the biggest help. I theorize that he couldn't clearly see the bowl because his head was spinning so I brought it right to his mouth and he didn't need to see it, he had the instincts For when your dog develops a degenerative disease and their legs stop working and they become incontinent: . Use a strap to hold up their hind end for walks and potty breaks. Be patient and don't always come to the rescue if their bum drops. Over time my pup's front legs became much much stronger and he could pull himself up. Sometimes he needed a little assistance and sometimes he did it all by himself . If you doddle, you waddle. My pup loves to sniff on walks but sometimes he takes so long his legs give out. Just keep swimming . If they have incontinence, consider doggie diapers or pee pads. Also, walk your dog on little walks throughout the day to get things moving. We discovered there is a definite correlation between his evening walk resulting in poop vs not walking him and finding poop in the morning . If his mobility is extremely hindered consider a doggie wheelchair and a drag bag for indoors . Give your pup's paws more traction indoors and outdoors by applying paw balm (old dog paws dry out). Also trim the fur between the toes (aka grinch toes). Invest in some good quality rubbery booties with traction. My pup started to drag his hind paws and his "knuckles" started to bleed and blister and the booties protect them now. . Install ramps with traction outdoors and indoors if you can. It's made a major difference for my family because he can go up and down on his own! We built them with wood and put shingles on them for traction. . Keep grit free floors . Talk to your vet about pain management . Give pain management and joint help food and treats . Turmeric! My dog has days where his mobility is heartbreaking but he also has days where he doesn't need assistance and I'm so proud of him! If you give your pup methods to deal with his problems then they can overcome! They adapt. My dog has even been using his tail for better balance lately.

    Aww Rosey, I know it's hard to let go of your best friend. I had to put my pup Java down in December of 2016 just shy of her 17th birthday. When she was soiling herself and couldn't walk herself to the door to go to the bathroom, she looked so defeated and I knew it was time. Watching her last breaths at the vets office was the hardest thing I've ever had to do, I still can't even think of adopting another pup. If you haven't had to euthanize a pet before, be sure to have someone else you love with you. Sending you love and positive thoughts 🖤
