I’ve been trying to figure out what I love so much about Johnny’s Tonight Show, and I think I figured it out: the conversations are so real. I keep finding myself thinking: ‘they’d never allow this today, it’s too slow’. But they’re real conversations, natural ones, and it’s really nice.

The guest doesn't get interrupted every five seconds, the audience isn't hollering and whooping after every sentence, and the host isn't pretending to laugh.

Well I was 30….the 60s 70s & 80s were great. Something(s) changed after that. I’m grateful for the era I grew up in. Those were the days, for sure.

I like how back then the audience didn't (fake) cheer for every single thing. If this was today, they'd cheer when he mentions winning those titles, and making those movie. Audience feels real.

Arnold is a true story of a person who did it all. He came to the United States, trained, went to college, won so many titles, starred in so many films, made so many films, became a governor of Cali and many more achievements. The legend 👏👏👏💪

There are plenty of people today who can regrettably fill that room.

I watched Johnny Carson as a young kid all the way until he retired. His shows always had something for everyone, a skit, animals, movie stars etc. I think this is why I liked it, it wasn’t over a little kids head, and wasn’t childish to put off adults. I don’t believe his show would survive today, no violence, sex, or totally offensive things to attract today’s audience. RIP Johnny, you were one of a kind and are truly missed!

My favorite exchange was with Johnny and Drew Barrymore at age 7. He asked little Drew if she watched the show, and she said yes. Then he asked her if she understood the jokes. Her reply: “Some of them.” Johnny: “Well you fit right in.” 😂😂😂

Certainly debunked the big dumb bodybuilder stereotype. Just read his Total Recall book. He takes credit when it was deserved but doesn't really blame others or talk dirt on others in the book. Enjoyed his book more than the tell all books

Arnold has a strange way of bragging that still makes him sound humble. I don’t know how he does it, but it works.

I think a lot of it is his cadence. Also, consider his native language is German, Austrian German and he didn't really speak English until he moved to the US...so not a long time speaking it at time of this interview. He is probably thinking in German and then translating to English...takes a little bit of time. So he probably learned to give himself enough time for this while pondering what he's going to say. He's pretty damn smart I remember somewhere I read his iq was in 120-30. Not sure if that was legit but I'd say he's pretty smart regardless lol.

Its so awesome to see this interview with this man. The Swarz himself in his prime. And pre Terminator as well! What a nostalgic moment.

And here we are, almost 40 years later, talking about one of the most iconic movie ever made.

Johnny wasn't overtly political, and he made the show about the guests. He didn't have an audience to cater to; absolutely anyone could watch and enjoy it. Miles beyond anyone who has come along since.

I remember seeing this episode when I was young, and getting super excited for the movie. Such a blast from the past

I've seen the Terminator a thousand times and I still can't get over how scary Arnie is in it.

And of course, that film would go on to make MEGA bucks and become a classic! And, in my opinion, the BEST film of that franchise, slightly above T2, as good as that one is. I watched Carson all the time, but this is my first time seeing this interview. Fantastic!

The two very quick looks that Johnny gives to Arnold at the 5:29 mark are my favorite moments from this interview. The first is one of those "I can't believe you said that, you sly fox" looks while the second is this cheeky glance in the direction of the "merchandise" to more directly acknowledge the innuendo. I'd have a hard time believing those were done for the audience. I'm not sure if the studio attendees are close enough to catch these details. And the looks are so quick that you miss them if you blink. We can't tell if Arnold sees them, but I'm not sure they were done for him, either. It was more like the people paying close attention at home were getting this private look into Johnny's personality. I think he had a fantastic sense of humor and that his reactions tended to be very natural. His interviews mostly seemed to be a very organic process. He wasn't afraid to lose his composure from time to time. I'm a big fan of his interviewing skills and his body language.

I remember seeing Terminator in the theater in 84. The scene when Arnold is on the phone with Sarah Conner and the camera pans to Arnold imitating Sarah's mothers voice got a huge laugh from the audience. That always stuck in my head. Awesome movie..good times!

Arnold was a funny guy enjoying life! Fair play to him he has accomplished so much.

9:45 "I'll be back" Johnny says. That line didn't become famous until after the movie came out, which I'm sure was after this interview. It stood out for Johnny, which is interesting. Of course it has become part of film lore since then. I remember Arnold saying that he had no idea that line would be a fan favorite.

And that’s why Johnny Carson was so good: even a ‘normal’ interview was top-notch and entertaining.

No disrespect, but Michael Biehn is the reason T1 is as good as it is. Reese is the one who is on screen the most and it is Biehn who makes T1 as credible as it is with his totally committed performance.

Its rather ironic, because Biehn initially said he didn't want to be in a "silly Arnold film" and wanted to start his career by acting alongside Al Pacino or Robert De Niro because he'd recently seen Taxi Driver. Good actor, but a bit full of himself, I think. He even said after T2 he would never play Reese again. That was one reason why he declined to make a cameo in Dark Fate, so they wrote his character out as no longer existing in the new woke feminist timeline. After Biehn, Anton Yelchin was great too, rest his soul. Jai Courtney....... meh, he was ok, but he could've done better. It was rather stupid to write Reese with a sarcastic sense of humour in Genisys, not after him growing up after a nuclear war.

@@NoctemAeternusMusic Good point. I did read that Terminator solidified Arnold and Cameron's careers. Actually it even said no one expected Terminator to be successful, they called it a sleeper hit. I still wonder why we hardly see Biehn anymore. I only recently saw him in one episode of The Mandalorian. Cameron considered him for the villain in Avatar and Stallone considered him for Expendables 2.

What a trip. I was born on this exact day and happen to be a big fan of Arnold, his bodybuilding and acting career. T2 was my favorite movie as a kid. Very cool stumbling across this.

I saw the Terminator in a German theater where I was stationed. It was great. Annie didn't have many lines. Then I saw it again finally in English in Switzerland. Had subtitles on the screen in 3 different languages. German Italian and French. In the middle of the film the lights came on. The people near me said pause pause. Break time!! Everybody went to the bathrooms etc... When Terminator 2 came out I drove down to Bertchesgarten to a theater that showed newly released films in there original English. I'll be back!! 😳😳😳

I wish they were allowed to show the clip.. Love the terminator and T2!! and I have liked the way they have brought in new variances of the idea to the new movies of it. was great seeing Arnold before total star, and just being humble to be in the States and becoming a star.

One of my favorite films of all time. I’m very blessed to have seen it in a theater when I was fifteen.

When my husband picked that movie, I wasn’t very enthusiastic. Once the movie started, WOW........ what a great film!!!

i just find it so hard we all get old its sad , what an era for film.

I can relate to his comments on horses. As a young man I did a lot of horse back riding. One horse my family owned had a real mean streak--an ungelded stallion. Whenever I rode him, he spent half of time literally trying to kill me. His favorite move was to try to sweep me off his back by running under low hanging tree limbs. If such a horse was successful, and you were dragged with a food stuck in a stirrup, it would likely prove fatal. But, I rode him anyways because it was quite a rush. He was big, powerful, and a fast runner. The sensation in a gallop was very exhilerating.

Crazy to think how much work and things he had to overcome to get into movies alone. Lucille Ball what a legend for spotting Arnolds potential.

That was broadcast 3 months before I was born. I became a fan of the Terminator franchise cos of Terminator 2: Judgement Day.

Does anyone know which trailer they showed?

Arnold (talking about "The Terminator"): "It's tremendous from the beginning to the end.. Action packed." Johnny: "I wish you luck with it." I'd say Arnold was VERY lucky and very GOOD as The Terminator in many movies.

I had seen the I'll Be Baack scene setup🎬 🎥 among another location scene being filmed , on the way to work on graveyard shift,. Wondering what they were filming. Aha moment once I went to theater.

The first Terminator movie is the best. There is just something about it that was never captured again. Such a creepy and menacing atmosphere. Arnold as the villian was just perfect. He didn't need to have many dialogues, it actually made him more scary. Also love the practical effects. Today's over use of CGI ruins so many movies. It just feels so fake and empty. I want the actors to interact with the real world and not just walking around in front of a green screen.

@@mrmaxaxl : The difference is that the first movie is a scifi-horror low budget movie. The 2nd one is more action packed and full of cgi due to the bigger budget. The further you get in the franchise the more humour was added to please a bigger audience. Right up to aiming for a woke audience with dark fate where they finally terminated the whole franchise.

terminator an instant classic, its great to see i guess the earliest talk shows like carson, and just think about back then and how to sell a movie, of course now its different but back then my parents time, a different time, and quite wonderful in a way, i know james cameron, said he got a fever dream of this idea, but to be honest, this has been done in westworld and six million dollar man, about a robotic person of somesort, so i wonder if james cameron got an idea from watching those, you know and i always thought terminator was the first but not really westworld was an john conner the name appeared in a micheal critchon novel im reading i forgot the name i think it was rising sun, but great interview, that is crazy out of everyone lucy o balle, gave him a head start, i cant wait to watch her movie.

Arnold was certainly headed strongly already in the direction of media entertainment, TV, movies, but it was so important to hear him mention about Lucille Ball offering him a part in the movie she did with Art Carney where he play "Rico" the masseur. That was a critically important opportunity for him at the time. Lucille Ball was smart, a great judge of talent, powerful and shrewd business woman; one of the most famous and recognizable celebrities in the world during her time....how much that break Arnold got with her influenced his success in the business is impossible to say, but it may have been a huge springboard for him...

amazing how articulate Arnold is in this interview. In most of his movies, I always got the sense that he had a very slim grasp on the English language. Is not the case at all here.

Still my favourite Arnold film.

Carson's good luck is god powered, because the movie is an eternal sci-fi classic with the perfect cast.

I wonder why nobody here is talking about the horse accident Arnie talked about in this interview! People, an entire live horse rolled over and landed on him and he just passed out! As a person who rode horses for a long time I can tell from experience that many more have ended up in much worse with far far less! We are happy to still have him with us after such a freak accident, and he is indeed a freak of nature to have survived that!

If he was born in the USA, he'd have been president no doubt . He has to be one of the most motivated people on earth.

So the REAL Arnold was really smooth, thoughtful, well-spoken and articulate, without even that strong of an accent. He hammed it up for the movies! The guy is a legend for sure.

Big fan of Arnold.Action actor with his uniqueness.

His life story is quite inspirational

Johnny was the very best! Arnold was wundabar!

Saw the Terminator with friends while in college in 84...had no idea what it was about. Blown...absolutely away...seen it more times than any other movie since then... Around ~120 times....

"Outpost" ... I don't recall Arnold in that Movie. What happened to that Movie?

Letterman actually shows a clip from it when he was on in 1991 to promote T2!

His robotic accent , suits his role perfectly.

terminator 2 was made in 1992 I believe and I haven’t checked on google yet. this is great too and Arnold is cool

Johnny is so awesome! He let's his guests talk. Love Ah-nold too. Great stuff.
