@wokeness is a sickness that's not what @Created meant! As a parent, I'm also concerned about what books my kids read, but I also teach them to be open-minded about issues and I also ask them to come to me with an issue they don't understand. Parents should be involved in their kids' upbringing, but going and threatening a library for having certain books that you don't like is totally uncalled for. If you have proof that those books are present in the library, simply tell your kids that you don't want them reading them, but don't attack the entire library because the fact that you don't like them doesn't mean that everyone thinks the way you do (if you think at all, that is).

Is it down to one person/moral compass/religious belief over another? One political ideology over another? One racial/ethnic background over another? Do more affluent residence of, let’s say, Blue Springs or Lee’s Summit have any right to tell kids who live on Prospect, Paseo, Troost etc. what they are and aren’t allowed to read? What if those children see themselves in a given character or book, But some affluent, suburban soccer mom has decided they can’t read that book because of its language, themes/content, and because her precious, innocent boy or girl might, heaven forbid, be exposed to the lives of others who aren’t as fortunate as they are? Second if you want to monitor what your children read, fine, but you have no right to legislate what other peoples’ children read. Please explain to me how the “Party of Freedom“ can even fathom the idea of restricting book access. regards, Dorvell Stewart, Independence, MO.”

Wow. These must be some seriously weak, clueless, powerless parents in that redoubt group. I never worried about what BOOKS my kids could find in the library, because I knew my KIDS. Sadly, my son wasn't a big reader. But my daughter read a LOT of books. I could compile a list of her favorites, and there was a decent list of those she didn't like. If you know your kids, and teach your kids, and stay involved in their lives, you don't need to worry much about outside influences--especially not BOOKS! These parents are surrendering their power and influence to outsiders, assuming that all it takes is a book or two in their child's presence, to turn them gay, make them want transgender reassignment, or cause them to be victimized by sexual predators. Good grief, talk to your kids! Find out what they're reading, and read it yourself. Discuss their books. Ask them questions. Show them your own favorites. This is what fascism looks like. Pretty much what I was thinking. How weak-minded do you have to be to believe that a book will force your mind and behavior to change against your will? And if you think a book can't do that to _you_ but can do it to your children, then _teach your children_ to be strong in the face of manipulative books. It's that simple. What these people are doing is incredibly lazy parenting _at best,_ insisting that every institution raise their children for them-but only the way the biological parents want them to-and every other person accept that their lives must be reduced in experience because the biological parents want to pretend their belief in God gives them the authority to preach fire and brimstone to people who didn't ask to hear it (which goes against the teaching of Jesus) and brandish items that break the sixth Commandment if actually used (and breaks the second if not). The ludicrous part is that you _know_ that if someone went to that library meeting and demanded that the Bible and all religious texts be removed because they might indoctrinate kids to religion and negatively impact society by encouraging slavery and incest and so on, these people would scream at the top of their lungs about the First Amendment and how God is Good and how religion never hurt anyone (who didn't deserve it, I guess?). And they would never see the irony of their behavior.

Funny, but no one is FORCING their kids to go to the library, and check out books they find offensive, and READ them! I worked in a library for about 30 years. This sort of stuff has been going on for all that time, but without the guns. Challenged children's books are generally labelled Parental Advisory, or something like that. So then it is up to them. Most parents don't actually give a shit if their kid takes out a Deadpool DVD. They only get their hackles up if it a kid's book about gay penguins, which is usually labelled Parental Advisory. Out of interest, is "parental advisory" limited only to controversial books or is it also used on books that have genuine reasons for it? Actually, PG means Parental Guidance. As in it is up to the parent to decide if their children should watch the movie or not. It does not and never has meant it was for children. G means General as in for everybody. There is a similar thing with books though far lesser known. However, regardless of any rating it is the parent's responsibility to actually read the book or watch the movie/show and decide if it is suitable for THEIR children. In short do not rely on ratings. Actually, read and watch things before you let your children read or watch them. That is just common sense (or at least it use to be) and logical. Stop blaming everyone else. While it is bear impossible to prevent outside manipulations and pressure to affect your children you can minimize it as best as you can and do your best to teach your and raise your children up right. The real issue is that parents do not actually raise their children anymore. Everyone else and society does. That is why you get ignorant people like in the stupid group in Idaho.

@@Basileus84 that's actually sad then. I'm not a parent but used to work in childcare & vacation care. We would do movies with the vacation care kids after lunch each day, as a sort of rest time. We'd let the kids choose, but only from G & PG, not PG13+ so applying this to books, they would have missed out on any inclusive stuff if it gets uplabled cause of this crap. I can easily see regular parents missing that shelf completely & missing out on reading with their kids the sort of stuff they want to expose their kids to, to grow them into happy, well adjusted people. I mean a child dying of cancer or living with an abusive parent is a VERY different category to a child living with 2 loving mums! The idea of that shelf is it should be that off that shelf, kids can read it themselves, but on that shelf, the parents can tell their kids that the rule is that the parent will read that book to the child, cause it has concepts in it they may need to talk about or have explained to them. That's really sad to see books with 2 mums, black kids etc go into that category instead of just being books that kids stumble across & grow up exposed to as just a regular part of normal society. We used to intentionally buy books at all childcare centres I worked in, that had representatives of any parts of society that we were lacking, so as to normalise it in the children's eyes & expose them to it. Books with kids in wheelchairs, mixed colours etc etc were something we'd look for to ensure they were exposed to this stuff as "normal" They didn't come out as "special" books, they were on the shelves for kids to read themselves anytime they wanted to! which imo is how it should be! Books about illness, we had a few that we'd sometimes put in the regular bookshelf & sometimes pull, depending on where kids were with that at the time, but we also had a separate book collection for books like that & would pull them out only with parents permission & knowledge, to read to them in supervised ways to help kids cope with going into hospital, or a friend or family member being sick or dying, cause these books could be used to help in the education on this stuff, but it had to be done carefully, in line with what each child's maturity could handle. Books with black kids don't come into that category! If these parents had been exposed to them at a young age, they probably wouldn't have the immaturity issues they are now suffering from!
The simple fact they refuse to go on recored & be interviewed nor show up at township meetings when it's known cameras will be there. Tells you all you need to know about their true motivations. If you're embarrassed to be seen advocating for a point, you don't really believe it yourself.

Before they hang my ass on the wall, I'll take out as many of them as I can. They don't believe in democracy, they want theocracy. Fuck that shit
I genuinely free bad for the communities that have to put up with this kind of stuff. Civil discourse is dead and it is groups like these that have killed it.
The irony of claiming people are trying to silence you while you are actively pushing for censorship and silencing ideas you don't like.
Who gave these individuals the right to be the "moral police."

Imagine living in 2022 and thinking The Library is where your kids are going to be "corrupted"...
My wife was a school librarian and the closest thing to sexually explicit material that the kids and some teachers, were interested in was the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue. I was a farmboy with two older sisters so between open bedroom doors and livestock i knew that Barbie and Ken were not anatomically correct. What century are these book banners living in? Perhaps we need to force pets to wear pants.
I promise you there is not a single person that went to school for library science because they wanted to be on the front lines of America's march towards headassery... we are living in ridiculous times
How come we never see these people going after the churches for their crimes against children? 🧐

Because child sexual abuse also happens in Christian Nationalist families.

You don't think these are the same people that would try to drive a church flying a rainbow flag banner out of the community?

Because THEY ARE ACCOMPLICES IN THE CHURCHES' CRIMES AGAINST CHILDREN. It's no coincidence how many of these cults/sects/whatever build their core around males (or one male) to do with women and girls as they please, because THEY THEMSELVES ARE PEDOPHILES AT THEIR CORE.
Did she say the books werent even the library? These people are a threat to this democracy.

Banning books is only a problem when the right does it I guess. When those on the left banned Dr. Seuss books, burned copies of Harry Potter novels in bonfires and denounced classic children's literature like "Little House on the Prarie" and "Mary Poppins" as racist that didn't bother you.

The books were never in the library. Critical race theory was never taught to students younger than college. There were no trans people bothering anyone in bathrooms. They just make us issues to get mad about. It is a culture war, not an actual legal battle over something in reality.
Oh my goodness this is happening in my area now!
Start charging them with hate crimes
So it's up to parents what books a library can have on its shelves? If that woman doesn't want to read a book then no one is forcing her. But this is about extremist Christianity so we're not dealing with rational people.

Yup, the parents job is to pay attention to what books their kids are reading, not try to censor other kids' fare - but - one lady said that deviant sex books were drawing perverts into the library and while they are there they might as well molest a child - these people are simply sick (and bad ignorant)
Tell me these people are not Nazis. Unreal how anyone can act this way. They need mental health intervention since they are clearly not right in the head.

This makes my blood boil, I hate when people (especially librarians) are being verbally threatened and attacked for something as innocent as this and the parents who are the ones who are so hell bent on keeping their kids and family “Pure” act as if though their ways are gonna stick! Do you really think that for a minute that your children or grandchildren aren’t going to rebel against you?? Books aren’t the enemy here, you have the right and freedom to do with what you please in YOUR life (NOT intimate or hurt others), and don’t EVEN stamp “GOD’S NAME” on what your saying to others as if he approves of you threatening people because of what you don’t approve of.

Exactly I wonder why these people feel so threatened about the 400 books that aren't even at this library it kind of screams guilty conscience to me they're probably a bunch of Internet porn watchers. It would be really funny if every one of them had a child that came out of the closet 😂😂
OMG. this is ridiculous
