Yeah this is the game that brought me into the hobby. Going from Monopoly to this was mind blowing. I still play it once a year around Halloween. I was lucky enough to get two expansions before it went out of print. It's a great game, I'll never get rid of it. 3rd edition is trash. I don't know what FFG was thinking with that one. A collectors edition of the 2nd edition would be awesome! Knowing FFG it would cost a fortune.

@@petergross7235 I actually enjoy 3rd. I guess because that and Eldritch were my first lol. But considering they trashed it anyway I thought I'd try something new. I'm not closed down to anything new like 2nd editioners are.

100% my best game of all time, have al the expansions, figures, BGG fan made adds, it's amazing. Play with one big box expansion and one small, to avoid diluting it, and you're golden... stay at a 4 player count for best fun.

Thanks for this update! I have AH2 + Dunwich Horror + a few smaller expansions and have been thinking about "cashing in", but I have had so much fun playing this. Not sure I have room in my life for a 5 hour game any more though. But this video has me thinking perhaps I'll get it back on the table at least one more time.

You may not play it much, but if you get rid of it, you’ll regret it. I got rid of my set only to find I didn’t like AH3 nearly as much, and ended up missing the original and buying it all over again. I still get it out about twice a year just to run it solo. I just like it quite a lot.

I'd buy 2 Collectors Editions with all the content. One to use and one to wrap up for when the first one died. That's coming from someone who has every expansion now. I think your review is fair too. The number of encounter cards was never really a problem for me because of the way that I play. But if you get stuck in a place (streets closed), it CAN become a problem. Ultimately, I think this is still one of my favorites.

I have rose tinted glasses about this game. It was of my first games after Dominion and carcosonne. And it was such a different epic feeling from any other game I’d played before it. I have many memories from this game and once I had all the expansions I had way too much stuff. We may not play it that much but it will never leave my collection.

I've got all 3 editions and I have gone back to 2nd edition as the best, and I pimped out the game experience with all sorts of plastics from Cthulhu Wars for Gates and Elder Signs as well as the cultists, Monsters etc which if you also have Mansions of Madness as well gives you a metric F ton of tentacles. I’m still a big fan of Arkham 2nd Edition. You nailed it about the sliders which gives a good deal of ability to plan and puzzle out a turn and I’m kind of surprised that isnt a mechanic used more in similar stat based games. It has lots of good player agency in my experience which is lacking in some of the Arkham Files games. Yeah, expansions elevate the game quite a bit. Dunwich Horror still can be found for less than $100 and it’s always worth to keep an eye out on auction sites. I scored Miskitonic Horror last year to complete my collection for $50 new and in shrink. Also you can always check the wiki to create and print off some of your own cards like the ancient one battle cards or personal stories.

I have a copy sitting in a box somewhere, doubt I will ever get it out again (or the game). Aeons ago I was a HPL fan but now the Mythos seems so overexploited. If I want a Cthulthu Mythos game I might play A Study in Emerald, but for this style of Ameritrash game I would probably choose Fortune and Glory or A Touch of Evil, both of which I like very much.

For me, because there are some many rules and points to remember, I had to refer to the rulebook alot which really screws with the immersion. As much as I wanted to, I couldn't really get absorbed into the theme or gameplay because I had to snap back into reality and check the rulebook for some obscure detail I didn't commit to memory. And since the game takes 3 hours to play it's too long to play back to back to help reinforce the concepts. Unless you play this game regularly (twice a month or so if you're memory is like mine) you will likely forget the details and find yourself faced with the headache of relearning it which is about as fun as reading a rulebook. That being said, if I played it weekly I would enjoy it. I would have th details committed to memory and the game would be excellent. But I can't play any game over and over every week for too long

So there's a 3rd edition now for this game - do you know what the changes are? Are 3rd edition expansions compatible? Also there's the card game which I don't know how different it is. I had the card game in shrink and sold it off because I didn't want to get sucked down that rabbit hole and end up paying tons of money for all the extras. That was years ago and now there's a lot more content out there.

The big addons bring good new Stuff i dont wanna miss, like the insane & wound cards or the epic fight vs the Old Ones. The Difficult can be imbalanced, even if you dont mix to many addons in. Way to EZ or Extreme Hard. Eldritch Horror make a few Things better, but i still prefer Arkham :) THX for the Vid.

I got into boardgames through Eldritch horror, but Arkham Horror 2ed is definitively my second-davourite. It is a bit fiddly, but the atmosphere is fantastic and it's always a lot of fun. I have this and Eldritch Horror, and I get the point about the thematic feel and streamlined gameplay Eldritch Horror provides. But Eldritch Horror has a few things that I don't like as much as I wanted. The mythos deck, for example is a limited deck now. The way you set it up sounds nice, but it takes a little bit of the element of surprise, because when you're at the end of a stage of the deck, you're probably going to guess or expect what kind of card you're getting before drawing it. And on top of that, if the mythos deck is empty and you have to draw a card, you'll lose the game because of a timing mechanism rather than an event (something on the card that happens and then triggers the losing condition). Also, I understand the Ancient ones being different and I'm glad of that, but that claustrophobic kind of feel of the threat increasing is not so present in Eldritch Horror as it is in Arkham Horror. It's easier to get the hang of the game and Arkham Horror's rules are poorly written, but in the bigger picture I do understand why most fans of both games seem to prefer Arkham Horror.

I love it to death for that, but the game is very clunky and unmanageable with expansions unlike EH and AH3. Eldritch Horror replaced AH2 for me, AH3 is a completely different beast, but it's a better game mechanically than AH2 for sure, though I wish they had the old ones like they do in 2nd edition, but some of the scenarios are very good and very hard to win.

While I would say Eldritch Horror is a more elegant game and I’d choose that if I had to, there’s something distinctly special about Arkham 2nd Edition. To me it has the most Lovecraftian feel and is the most atmospheric of any of the Arkham Games. I instantly feel like I’m in that city and know that shit is about to hit the fan! And the enemy movement mechanics! That’s one thing I wish had been addressed more in this review. Whole fiddly, I think it’s genius, dynamic and forces the players to make some tough decisions. This is a random game, but in general I think there are a lot more choices to be made by players than it gets credit for.

I sure get tired of people thinking "Ameritrash" is appropriate. AH2 is a good game, high quality, nobody down below is saying it's garbage (there are definitely people who don't like it, but that happens with every loooong game, and AH2 has a large and loyal fanbase)... But for some reason, people still gotta put "trash" in the name because that's what everybody else calls it. It's just so PC. Even people who don't like Euro games don't take that as an opportunity to slip in an insult in the category name. Feel free to use "Ameritrash" with "Monopoly" and "Sorry" or whatever. But come on. The game isn't trash unless it's trash.
