Part 1: • Aries Spears on Man Tr...
--------
Aries Spears spoke about his views on rappers turned actors. The conversation began with a discussion about rappers like DMX and Ice Cube, whose acting, Aries points out, tends to be fairly one-dimensional and within their familiar personas. When asked about Will Smith, Aries acknowledged him as the best amongst rappers turned actors. Aries also brought up Mos Def, Tupac, and Queen Latifah as capable actors with more range. On the other hand, he had less positive views about Common's acting, which he describes as "one tone." Aries stresses the importance of range and depth in acting, comparing rappers' acting skills to those of seasoned actors like Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, Denzel Washington, and Al Pacino. The conversation ended with a reminder that opinions are personal, and one's prowess in one field doesn't always translate to excellence in another.

Mos Def is the most talented emcee EVER. He can freestyle. He can act on screen. He’s done plays. He can rap all different styles. He sings. He does Caribbean and Afrobeat vibes. He can rock in English, Spanish, Arabic or Japanese. He’s just as poetic as Pac or Nas. He’s just as political as Common or Chuck D. He’s just as creative or abstract as Andre 3000 or Q-Tip. You can put Mos Def on a song with JayZ, Dead Prez, Common, Nate Dogg, Pharoahe Monch, Kanye West, The Isley Brothers, Fela Kuti, Busta Rhymes, Jay Electronica, it doesn’t even matter.. he’s going to come with some shxt to match the vibe. He’s not the Greatest Emcee, as far as discography or career. But, Yasiin Bey is absolutely the Mos Talented. I’ll never forget when he crashed that award show with his own stage and performed, “Katrina Clap” to make sure the message got out 😂😂😂😂😂 Mos gives NO f**ks on top of all the talent 😂😂😂😂😂

I have been saying this for years. Unfortunately people who have never acted or truly appreciate what acting is will assume a str in a movie makes them an actor. Sad thing is many of these Rappers are just using film as a vehicle for their brand and do not make any effort to train themselves in acting for greater performance. I wouldn't say they don't have range. I would say they're cast for a certain archetype in every movie. They don't get the opportunities to show their range. Look at how long it took certain actors to get roles to show their talent. Will Smith had a some great acting moments in Fresh Prince but it took a really long time for him to get a movie role were where he could show his range. Everyone knew he could act but he kept getting cast as the Fresh Prince.
