Michael Jai White on Aries Spears Saying Rapper Actors Ice Cube & 50 Cent Have No Range (Part 13)

Part 12: • Michael Jai White on A...
Part 1: • Michael Jai White on T...
--------
Michael Jai White weighed in on comedian Aries Spears's criticism that rapper-turned-actors Ice Cube, 50 Cent, and others lack range in their performances. According to Spears, these performers often play versions of themselves or stick to roles that align with their natural personas, leading to a limited scope in their acting performances. White tended to agree but argued that most actors, not just those transitioning from music to film, often play versions of themselves. He emphasized that actors are often hired specifically to embody their own personas. He shared that in his acting career, he tries to avoid playing characters that mirror his true self.

    To be honest, most actors don't have range, as in changing their personality and voice completely. Like Jeffrey Wright alters his appearance and voice so much that people don't even recognize it's him as that character. Even Denzel, always plays Denzel in movies. But Denzel's personality is polarizing enough that he's entertaining in the role.

    Yep I assumed that's how vlad was trying to put it, though simple yet very strong and indeed having depth. This is pertaining to actors who seem to almost be not if the character or method acting type. But as you mentioned very polarizing therefore it still leaves you in awe and entertained.

    Denzel doesn't play Denzel in every movie lol. His Malcolm X, Alonzo, and Troy Maxson are nothing alike. The only thing is Denzel's natural charisma is present in all these characters but their mannerisms, motivations, and personalities are all different from Denzel himself.

  • @brandoni241

    @brandoni241

    5 ай бұрын

    @@randomcharacter6501 maybe Malcolm X and that's due to Denzel emulating Malcolm. Maybe Cry Freedom, but again he was emulating Steve Biko. Although his accent could've been better. But Training Day, Man on Fire, Philadelphia, Magnificent 7, Hurricane, that was Denzel's cadence and personality in different premises. Take a movie like Roman J Israel Esq. That character is supposed to be weak and wimpy. But other than the way the other characters treated him, Denzel came across strong, confident, and had a big presence. That's Denzel. His personality, mannerisms, and cadence are universally appealing. He's not the only big actor like that. Tom Cruise is like that. They're not character actors. Daniel Day Lewis, Jeffrey Wright, Brian Henry, those guys are character actors. Until those guys started getting recognition, people didn't realize they were in a lot of movies because they transformed themselves into a completely different person...

Common has range. Dmx that one fair enough. Cradle to the grave, Romeo must die, and belly all those characters could have been the same person. Cube has shown a little range. There’s different categories of “acting” your DiCaprios and DeNiros are doing a different thing then your Stallones, Schwarzeneggers, and the Rock, which itself is even different from what like your Tom Cruises and Jackie Chans are doing. Nuanced emotional performance acting gets a lot of attention, but body transformation and physical acting are art forms in and of themselves. How Stallone and Like Christian Bale manipulate their bodies appearance for a role deserves a different kind of respect. The way Jackie Chan and Tom Cruise physically perform their stunts deserves respect. It doesn’t make sense to compare and rank people who are doing 3 distinct things.

Although he couldn't help being much more handsome than Tyson, his cadence, his voice, eyework, were completely on point and absolutely believable. He was completely immersed in that role. Everyone should go back and watch this film especially Vlad. Michael is bonafide. It's just unfortunate he didn't receive or accept more challenging roles in good movies since then. But make no mistake in Tyson his performance was and still is one of the best bios.

    Range is relative to the brand of the actor. So as far as the brand of ice cube and Michael Jai, yes pretty one dimensional. They're always tough dudes or have an imposing presence of some kind. Ice Cube has more range I would say based off his barber shop performances but overall he's still Ice Cube
