@@TheKrostiman From Preston's brief for the chapter, there's no artifice beyond what Arianne figured out. The plan was for Denys to go in and kill Farring. I guess the Yronwoods could be Aegon supporters already and disobey her order to do nothing?
Preston if Jon Con cuts his hand off during the battle then Haldon will be the one attending him. If that is the case, then Haldon would be the first infected. Since he takes care of everyone, then he would infect others. Even through letters and ravens, he could infect castles and other regions.

Assuming it works like a real virus/bacteria and doesn't have a supernatural element, surely it can't survive on paper over long periods of time. I guess the ravens themselves could be carriers, but there's probably birds and wildlife in essos where the Grey men live. Also what if someone like shireen touched a rat while she was still contagious? If greyscale could spread like that it seems like the world would have already ended

Great chapter ! So many things I loved ! I'm not totally sure why Arianne needed to be inside the castle for the GC to take it but that was still very interesting. If we're going with Preston's theory that Anders Yronwood doesn't know Doran's code, it might very well backfire for Doran once again. When the Yronwood army joins with Aegon, it might be the first time when Varys (or some other GC member) implies to them that Aegon is a Blackfyre to gain their allegiance. That is, if we're following the idea that Varys will feed to each person a different story for who Aegon is.
@sihollett
Жыл бұрын
House Yronwood fought on the Blackfyre side because they were against the Martell-Targaryen alliance due to the Martell part (and the Dorne not being independent part). They don't care about Blackfyre or Baratheon or whatever. And that's assuming the big assumption that they aren't now close to Doran (via Quentyn and other ties the Martells have no doubt had to make since the Blackfyre rebellions).
@carter9449
Жыл бұрын
They needed someone who would be of use as a hostage to expect a somewhat kind welcome, and to have access to the rookery. No way they let just a group of sellswords and a random maester inside the castle. Denys being in the castle and able to take out the castellan should be enough to make the others surrender in exchange for their lives.
@angelikasteward3351
Жыл бұрын
@@carter9449 I second this idea. Basically, JonCon and GC needed her there for two main reasons: 1) diplomacy and the political connections, bc there's no way in hell they'd give as much leeway to a random (and suspicious) maester as they did to Arianne, and 2) scheming: they needed someone of an elevated status like Arianne, who also wasn't 100% in on their scheme. As we've seen from her past chapters, Arianne's story is all about gossip and information-gathering --- but she also hasn't exactly proven herself to be the most adept liar. Maester Denys kept his cool almost the entire time, but in contrast, Arianne is easy to read and easy to unrattle. Their cover would've been blown had she been completely in the know-how.
The recurring bit with the ravens is so on point and used to hilarious effect here. Love it.

He may misunderstand, or he may have his own agenda. The suspense is intolerable, I hope it will last.
Who is the fake Maester Denys? I propose 5 possibilities: 1. Denys Strong of the Golden Company. 2. Jon Lothston of the Golden Company, since the name "Jon" is a theme of these TWoW-chapters, especially with the ravens in this one. 3. Little Pussy of the Golden Company, as Arianne associates him with a feline (panther). 4. Lysono Maar the spymaster, who like Varys might have many different personas, and Lysono might be hiding his badassness behind feminine looks. 5. A Faceless Man hired by Young Griff's supporters with possible Blackfyre gold found by Arya Stark at the House of Black and White.

Another sick chapter. It would have been particularly poetic if the chapter ended with: “Gilbert Farring had been sacrificed to the Lord of Light.” Brutal irony as he plummets to the torches below. Much of the chapter focuses on religion, and Farring threatens to burn Arianne to support Stannis. It would be amusing if Stannis’ mission in the north was aided in some way from Farring’s death.
Hands like Arys!! Nice touch!

Such a good chapter. Awesome work.
I knew there was a reason I stayed up till 3am
Yo Preston, I have an idea for your Samwell POV chapter! Perhaps his chapter begins with him studying at the Citadel. Normal boring Maester jazz. Maybe he stays up extra late looking at scrolls or whatever. He is wandering around the ramparts of the Citadel, and sees a small fleet approaching Oldtown. He squints, and sees the sigil of Euron Greyjoy. Due to Oldtown sleeping, Sam rushes to his room to find something, anything, to awaken the sleepy town. Sure, there should be some scouts looking for any warning signs, but due to Sam staying up extra late, he is the only one to sound the alarm to this silent fleet. And what choice does he use to awaken Oldtown? The horn that was gifted to him by Jon Snow, the theorized Horn of Winter. He blows it. It makes a loud, thunderous blow, awakening the town to the incoming attack. This will lead to Jons wolf chapter. Maybe he is wandering around the Wall, trying to hunt, and starts to feel the ground shake. Now I have two ideas on how the Horn of Winter (the horn Sam just blew to alert Oldtown of the upcoming attack) will affect the Wall. Maybe the Horn doesn’t pull down the Wall like Mance said, but maybe it pulls down its magical spell that held the White Walkers at bay. Or maybe a small section of the Wall falls apart. Perhaps the Nightfort crumbles away, leaving a small, but gaping hole within the Wall to allow the White Walkers to pass. This would heighten the tension at Castle Black. Perhaps after this, it makes Melisandre desperate enough to burn Shireen to bring back Jon Snow. Stannis would still be near Winterfell, miles away from the Wall. She needs someone the Nights Watch can rally behind that can protect the Wall. Just a suggestion...
@JohnTorres1987
Жыл бұрын
All of Oldtown is on alert not letting ships into the city without being boarded and checked. Even if they get past this in the dead of night without causing any alarms to go off, how is Sam going to see Euron’s sigil in pitch black? Then if he does see it, why would he use the horn that is broken to try to wake people up when yelling would do the trick? There are many other issues with this but those are just a few I’m going to mention.

@@elizabethmenjivar1695 I would like to see that horn blown too and see what happens. The Oldtown story is really exciting and I really want to know how it pays off. Will Sam bear witness to Euron’s destruction and taking of the city? I hope so. If he brings down the Hightowers after winning that huge sea battle against the Redwyne fleet of 1500 ships and the sell sails from Lys, then he will look unstoppable. I could see Cersei making common cause with him after she flees King’s Landing when Aegon and Jon Con take the city with the might of the golden company, Dorne who HAS to get involved in the fighting soon, and those “friends in the reach” that are mentioned in passing by a member of the golden company. I don’t know. We’ve been waiting so long that we are making our own stories of what we think/hope will happen.

Great chapter. Good plans. I have some thoughts that I'd like to hear other opinions on. If Dorne are there to meet with Connington's group in secret, why would they fly their flag on that boat? If it's about identification, the people on the battlements would have no reason to trust a Dorne flag, and the flag of Connington's cause was all they needed for entry. Flying their own flag was needless and spread about the information of Dorne's presence more freely; which is to Arianne's detriment. The time buying became farcical at the toilet. I get why he's trying to buy time. But did they need Denys up there? They already had a Maester. Nothing I noticed suggested Jurne couldn't have written those messages. I'm also surprised Arianne didn't try the "yup, I totally came to meet with YOU and no one else" line on Farring. The conversation wouldn't have flowed as well if she had. But it seems odd it wasn't considered in an aside. Also also. As interesting as Andrew Estermont's whereabouts are, I don't think Arianne had much reason to consider it interesting enough to dwell on.
Bravo!
