Barristan II, TWoW (Sweetrobin's The Winds of Winter Fan-Fiction)

Ойын-сауық

Barristan II, reconstructed, based on fan reports, which is frankly much harder than just having a new chapter. Not to mention battles are hard.

This chapter is perfect. From the use of source material to the beautiful and poetically written battle scenes. It's just like George. And anyone that says "it's too poetic for a barriston POV" remember we've only known him for 4 chapters.

Honestly though a battle scene is the perfect time for someone like Barristan to be poetic. Guy might be stubborn and "soldiery" as a character, but the guy's been in A LOT of battles. If there was ever someone who could paint a portrait of war that could be a centerpiece in the Louvre, it's Barristan Selmy.

yes, it is perfect! it's like one of GRMM's better chapters. and i don't think it's strange that it is poetic. i think it's fitting. like a battle would be poetic to a seasoned fighter/knight; if anyone then they would fine a sort of beauty or art in the chaos of well ... murder. and also on a meta lvl, i think you have to make it poetic cause it's just too brutal otherwise.

What I hate about this is that Preston holds a firm belief that whenever a character is sure of something, sh*t's about to hit the fan and show them just how wrong they are. Barristan saying 'Gods are good" and "We have them" makes me super queasy about what's to come next.

Love this project. Thank you for the good entertainment. However it leaves sort of a bitter taste in my mouth. I did the maths a few weeks back and if I remember correctly the fanfic is now at roughly 1/4 of the words of Dance or Storm I think. And we're just "midway" through the battle of Meereen and haven't even started the battle of ice yet nor the raid at Oldtown. So by the time we have those battles behind us and maybe have an update on Jon's, Davos' and Jaime's situations, we'd be "halfway through the book" - just for the intro and finishing cliffhangers basically. Now if I'm not mistaken GRRM has 1100 pages written and that's roughly 75% of TWOW or so? Which would put this "halway through the book" mark at maybe 35-40% of what GRRM sees coming for Winds. JUST TO FINISH THE OPEN MAJOR PLOTLINES. 😁 What's the rest gonna be about, can't be too much...

Loved it. Only thing that bothered me was that in the beginning Barristan enters his calm battle state of mind, only to go on daydreaming for many paragraphs. Maybe the battle ready mindstate line could be moved to just before his first kill. (what he was thinking about was all great though).

  • @ksolesky2

@@ksolesky2 of course. My point is not about how much time elapses. It's about order of events. The calm state where one can be effective in combat using broad awareness and quick reaction times usually doesn't leave room for reminiscing. But maybe the line was more about overcoming the nervousness, rather than what I thought.

Love this, another amazing chapter everyone. Thank so much for taking on this project and giving us a Winds of Winter. When Barristan thought 'He would never again doubt the valour of sell-swords'... Oh no you loveable dummy you are wrong about everything... This chapter is like a skillfully written game of trying to figure out which lines foreshadow Barristans inevitable betrayal and death... I also love how badly off course this battle goes immediately. Barristan's orders are to destroy the trebuchet, to free the slaves and kill the masters. Instead, his forces are wasting all this time mercilessly butchering slaves who have already turned to flee or who are chained hand and foot. Shows how Barristan is a great soldier but not a good battle commander.

This is one of my favourite chapters so far! I’m not saying any of them were bad, yet this one just scratched the right spot for me. Made me remember why I fell in love with the series as much as I did, with those “side” characters given time to shine. The writing was great, props to everyone involved! I know that George hasn’t given us that many battle chapters, but this one was particularly engaging for me! It was nice to be able to comprehend what is actually happening, granted, that might be because we’ve been digesting possible outcomes of this battle for years now, yet still, I enjoyed it so much! I know it might not be possible, and everyone in the comments keeps saying we won’t get the third chapter, but please please please do reconsider it. I don’t care about Jon chapters as long as you give me one more of this old fool. Loved all the little references and callbacks, gonna wait for the going over video! Oak and iron, guard me well, or else I'm dead, and doomed to hell! (Glad that Carmine will get the reference now hehe)

I didn’t expect a chapter! It was very good. Tbh I am not the biggest fan of George’s pivot to a super slow paced narrative (not even slow paced in the sense of a slow build, but just in the fact that so many things are going on all at once that actual progress through events is super slow), and so the endless buildup to the siege of Meereen / this battle has been not really my style. But this chapter was very well written and exciting. I liked that it was short and the ending reaction to the iron born was very good.

My main gripe with most of your chapters is that it feels like you're just going from reference to reference without giving time to breathe. It's just a bit too much, in my opinion. I still enjoyed the chapter, but we spent more time with barriston thinking of the seven kingdoms than we did with the actual actions taking place during the chapter. That's fine if there's not much going on, but this is a battle scene and, imo, the battle should be taking center stage.

I was leary of listening to these not gonna lie but i think youre doing a good job Preston. This is legends tho not cannon for me but in the star wars universe legends is better so i dont mean that as a put down just I still am holding hope GRRM will get the books finished. But im happy you're doing this.

btw, Krakens and Squids are different animals and look quite different; squids have ten arms, eight smaller and two larger.

personally i think the chapter should have ended at ‘we call them kraken’ and everything after that could be in a flash back in barristan iii, thats how i imagine grrm would do it

Can you do an updated video on the genetics of dragon and war? And maybe give some explanation for how Addam of hull is able to claim a dragon? Your theory fits so well throughout the entire line of Targaryens that I feel it must be at least partially true, and if it is it makes no sense that Adam could be a dragon rider. Let’s say for a second he is laenors son, laenor cannot pass on his dragon x gene, and the timeline doesn’t work that he’s a grandson, although that would work, giving a dragon x gene to a bastard woman, and she passes it to Adam. Also corlys is very unlikely to be dragon x, although I think it could work that if he did Adam could be HIS grandson, but corlys doesn’t have close Targaryen ancestry, although it is possible he has the gene. If he did though, why not claim a dragon when everybody was claiming dragons, his entire family had one. Also if corlys was dragon x then wouldn’t baela and rhaena both undoubtedly be dragon hatchers? While that is possible I don’t think rhaena and baela are Hatchers but maybe we have them swapped. but maybe baela is just a rider whose egg was hatched by rhaena and rhaenys, and rhaenas first egg was just no good. Another reason I believe your theory is true is because like you’ve said not only do wars start around the boom of dragon x genes, but also George gave rhaenyra and daemon no daughters. If she had even one surviving daughter, she’d likely have been wed to aegon or viserys, and they’d easily start a new dragon age with all the surviving eggs. Omg wait did George name all the dragon hatchers some variation of Rhaenys? The major ones anyway, dreamfyre rhaena, the queen who never was rhaenys, the realms delight rhaenyra, and then her cousin stepdaughter Rhaena? Obviously doesn’t work for Dany, but she came after the extinction. Also do we think danys ritual happened the way it did cause she needed to resurrect the eggs and then hatch them? And in the past you just needed a dragon Hatcher cause the eggs were viable? Or maybe the dragon keepers did the sacrifices and you just needed the presence of a Hatcher. Sorry for the ridiculous stream of consciousness here 😂😂
