It’s Caltrans, not CDOT, and they’ll put chain control up for wet road. What’s really frustrating for locals is they’ll always close the road completely rather than go to R-3, which is 4wd with chains. I lived and worked on Donner Summit before I started started trucks 30 years ago. I’ve lived in Idaho for the last 10 years now and I’ve seen worse conditions here, and chains are never required, only recommended.

You should hop in my Tow Plow, if I don't get passed on a 12 hr shift plowing 20-30 times (usually in corners between rock cuts) its no big deal. I should grab a dashcam and post some vids myself. I only have 7 winters behind my belt though, almost a rookie in comparison.
I can't figure out the camera mount (location) 🤔 It's not attached to the seat, is it? I can see the position of the fender mirrors shift in the frame throughout the video, so the mount can't be super stable/permanent... Anyway, I've lost sleep, appetite, and the ability to perform my marital duties over this question. I would greatly appreciate if you tell me.
A couple of those CHP are pretty cool around that area, was black ice on 139 a couple months back and he told me to either chain up or go around 395 to grasshopper rd. Was probably a good thing that night, does suck when we have to chain up because there’s so many morons driving in it that have no clue.
I can hear those drivers now as they pass saying look at that rookie creeping down the road with his chains on. Maybe the CHP officer went on break after he hassled you. That would be my luck.

Where did those two speeding chain-less trucks go?!? They seemed to just disappear 🧐🤔
Oh, it has to be really bad before I chain
I would’ve told the cop where to go and how to get there. I drive up in northern Canada, where the roads are even worse than that and we’re hauling bigger weights.
🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸💪💪
I drove for just over 30 years in Alberta and northern BC Canada. I was never told to chain up and if the roads were bad I would stop but if I wanted to keep driving I would chain up and only once I put on every chain I had, both axles, steering and trailer, safe travels driver

i guess you have never been forced to put on chains over I-80 in the rain cause it might snow then when you get to the 1/2 inch of snow all your chains are broken and slamming on your trailer and tractor from driving on asphalt in the rain
We need James Bond tires. Just push a button and steel spikes come out of the tires.
Officers always act like they know how to do your job and theirs. At best, they saw a demonstration or watched a video one time on chaining. And they also know how to drive a truck even though they’ve never been inside one much less drive one. Having the authority isn’t the same as having the knowledge

Because Mike doesn't use his CB, infact most truckers don't these days. And the last time Mike used his CB, he angered another trucker telling Mike to mind his own business. Mike also loves to bend the laws, that only works in his favor till a cop pulls him over telling him the what for. I like Mike's video's, I watch every one he uploads. But I do wish that he'd stop bending the laws so much. Just put the dam chains on, now nobody is angry, and you can go on your way. But he's got to fight the matter constantly.

Chain laws are in place for the lowest experienced driver in mind. If you were local at Baxter or Truckee or the local area you could drive well in R-3 conditions but it’s a low percentage of drivers who live locally. If it’s bad enough to chain 4- wheel drive then conditions exceed people’s experience level and skill level.

The cop is probably the same drivers ed safety clown that says that you have to be a car length behind for every 10MPH of speed. So if you are doing 80 you have to be eight car lengths behind LOL. What these "safety experts" never figure out that if you see the car ahead of you hit its breaks, you hit yours too and you stop together.

How did they get by without chains, you ask. Well they spin out. Then the trucks have to be pulled up the hill by tow trucks. Meanwhile, a major highway gets blocked by truckers too lazy to chain up. Happens every year on the Highway Thru Hell, named the Coquihalla Highway, British Columbia, Canada. That's why they want you to chain up, buddy.

You watch way too much reality TV. I am a Colorado driver and have NEVER owned a set of chains or snow tires in my life. My job is 75 miles away over one pass, one of the most dangerous in Colorado. Never spun out or been in a ditch. Chains are hard on the road and hard on the vehicle. If you know what you are doing you dont need chains. My advise to you is the next time it rains, chain up buddy.
You have an incorrect understanding of freedom.
