In the 60s, my dad was a traveling salesman. His territory was all of Colorado, Wyoming, eastern Utah, New Mexico. He covered it in 6 weeks. He drove a 61 Rambler station wagon and 64 Chevy Belair, rear wheel drive with bias ply tires (studded in the winter). In 1966 he left the road and we moved to Steamboat. This trip with you brought back so many memories of traveling over Rabbit Ears. Back then, if you needed to go somewhere, you got in the car and went. Thanks for the ride Mike!

Hello from Arizona! Mike, I really enjoy your adventurous video’s! I’m originally from the mid west; I can relate to the snow and ice driving. As you probably heard the other day out here three separate crashes on I-10 /chandler with fatalities. When I watch you drive I pray for you. You are a good family minded person! To you and all the truckers, thank you for working so hard for us. Without you truckers the goods and services wouldn’t be available. Stay safe, drive with happiness and music in your heart!

I remember, unloading in Sparks, NV and had to go empty into California to pick up a load. I had an empty trailer, high winds from the north and snowing heavy over Donner. When I got into California, without blowing over, I had a CHP in front of me and he said that he would let me know when I got out of the snow. He was a nice guy. I was running barefoot then too. It wasn’t snowing until I just started to approach the top of Donner. Got down to Lodi in one piece. Went right back over Donner the next day, dry as a bone. I miss trucking, I love your videos, keep them coming.

Thanks for giving us a taste of mountain snow conditions. I find myself concentrating on the road rather than the surroundings, even though I'm sitting here stationary in a warm house. Strange how we get programmed. Now I hope you go back through there in clear conditions so I can see what I missed!

i remember growing up in northeastern wisconsin. The winter heavy snow was wonderful. You could not hear vehicles engine or tire noise on the pavement. The heavy snow was wonderful. There were no bird sounds It was truly cold and harder to drive in the heavy snows and icy roads. I used to go for walks even below zero degrees at night with my dog in the winter cold. You just wear lots of layers of clothing with a warm hat and gloves. The same with your car you just drive slower and more carefully with no panic stops or jack rabbit starts. It is all about maintaining traction between your tires, the snow, ice and the pavement. You never wanted to spin your tires you lost all control. As long as your tires were moving over the pavement through the snow you had some traction.

Well Mike another safe and interesting trip. Great job of driving today. You know to do it. It brought back memories from 1959 on bus trip from Phoenix to Flagstaff. I stopped at Sedona AZ, and Arizona highway patrol asked me a planed on going into Flagstaff. I said I hadn’t planned on staying here with 29 passengers. He said chain up, which I did. Got to the top of Oakcreek canyon, no road. Covered with snow. You could make out the crown of road and you could see the plow guides on the side of the road, for the next 13 miles to Flagstaff. Made it safely. Also might say my first trip in snow like that. Another driver took it on towards Salt Lake City. Great memories.

Spent many summers in Steamboat Springs as a teenager. Made many trips over Rabbit Ears to Dumont Lake with my mom for fishing. Last time I trucked Rabbit Ears I was on a load from Medford Oregon to Muscatine Iowa. I opted for US 40 from Utah to Krummling then CO 9 over to 70 and onto Iowa. Too windy across Wyoming on 80 at the time. I remember rounding a curve on 40 and feeling the truck dancing through the curve. I had a friend whose dad worked at the Stagecoach development in Oak Creek in the 70s.

In the mid 80s conditions equally bad in a green/white at&t van 2 wheeler, and with semis many yards off on the hillside, made for a memorable adventure but would never do that again in such a deplorable vehicle. You are doing an excellent job in these conditions; very cool!

I did three years of refrigeration service in the mountains. Put 50,000 miles on this little 4x4 Astro van loaded down with parts. The rear wheels were actually sitting on an angle. My boss yelled at me cause i only got 20,000 miles on a set of tires. Rabbit Ears was my favorite pass with Monarch 2nd. They use or used to use lava rock instead of sand.

Yeah thanks for the offer Mountain Man Mike but I think I'll stick to shotgun and let you continue driving☺️ Some slow folk out there but looked pretty smooth overall for everyone going over Rabbit Ears👍 Speaking of Arizona, I'm in Yavapai County close to Prescott and we recently had a little snow storm, dumped a foot of snow. There were accidents everywhere, mostly single car accidents🤦 Talk about not knowing how to drive- you know what I saw the most of? 4x4 pickup trucks ditched or overturned, rolled in the median. Some get over confident or cocky! Thanks for the ride💯❄️😊

It’s looks a bit like our drive the morning of December 22. We were in Dillon Colorado and had to get to the airport to fly home. With the good ‘ol Eisenhower Tunnel/Loveland pass closed, I wasn’t sure what else would be closed to get back to Denver. I decided to head down SR-9 out of Frisco and roll the dice. Getting over Hoosier pass looked a lot like this, but lo and behold, we made it to the airport. Just to find out on the shuttle after turning in our rental car that Southwest had begun canceling flights, including ours. I looked at my wife and said “well, I did my part…I got us here…” 😆

My first trip to Steamboat was in early December 2014. I had been in Florida for 15 years prior to that. My rental car was a Subaru Crosstrek like the one being followed in this video. Once I exited I-70 at Silverthorn, it was all snowpack on the road the rest of the way. That little car kept true in the lane as long as I gave it a little gas, generally 60 mph. Rabbit Ears was beautiful, much like in the video. Nice memories.

36:20 I’ve routed my washer lines through a heat exchanger I made from a length of 1/2” copper pipe inside a 3/4”, in the heater hose circuit, forming a jacket of heated washer water, with a 3/16” inlet and outlet to the screen jets. It works a treat, summer to clear the bugs and winter when it’s snowy and frosty. Love the “clueless leader” reference…. 🤣 Respect Mike 🙏🏻❤️🇷🇴
