I'm so happy to see this and reinforce my own findings. I'm a high handicap beginner and I read all the reviews about GI irons and everything is saying "high launching," or "impossible to miss," etc. So I bought a relatively chunky iron hoping for the distance and higher ball flight. I couldn't hit the things off the fairways to save my life. I kept telling my dad that it felt like the clubs were dragging the turf instead of getting through the ball and the grass. I found a really nice Callaway Apex forged iron on ebay for cheap, so I gave it a shot. It was honestly a night and day difference in ball striking. I have no business playing that iron according to the marketing, but the results spoke for themselves. I strike it more consistently and the ball actually goes further than it did with my chunky Big Bertha irons on average. Once I get the opportunity to play more often, I'm looking forward to getting fit into more of a player's distance set to hopefully get the best of both worlds.

I've always stayed away from blades because I'm not a good enough player for them. However, every time I've tested blades I strike them better and more consistent than other clubs. Makes complete sense now. Thanks for the content!

Completely agree with this video topic. As an 18HC player, realistically I'm not a typical blade type player. But I have a very shallow angle of attack, and now play Mizuno MP18 SC over Ping G, as less turf gives a cleaner hit and ball flight. More club fittings should consider this, fortunately mine did

this is gold , my miura blades are the best feeling most consistent irons ive ever hit , they are butter thin down at 3 iron but they are just unbelievable through the turf for me , every time i try someones irons ,player or game improvement i start chunking them and feel like im getting stuck through the turf , i just swing away with them , this is my second set of them , before that mp 18s and nike blades . with the wider soles i feel like i have to really concentrate and almost pick it off the top thin to get a good strike . i was starting to think i was mad . ive always played blades from day one , my old mans wilson blades ,then mcgregor blades , i think you get used to a certain look , you get better at ball striking out of necessity , stinging hands soon wears thin on cold mornings . great video guys as always .

And this is why my next fit and every fit after will be with Ian!! Each and every video you gentlemen do is so insightful. I appreciate your attention to detail and covering so many great topics. I’ve struggled with other fitters I have been to regarding turf interaction. I think they assume as a lady golfer I should play a certain type of iron. Even as a scratch golfer!! It’s really quite annoying. I find the wide soled clubs to feel very chunky and slow at impact. They feel sloppy for me and harder to hit. So when Ian had the same experience it made me smile. I’m not losing my mind. Lol! I’m a player looking for consistency. Cannot wait for the Covid to take a hike and the border to reopen!! Ian and TXG will be my first stop for sure!! Cheers Gentlemen!! This makes a lot of sense! I had always thought I was crazy thinking these thinner soles were better through the grass for me, now I know. Whenever I've hit blades, or cavity backs with thin soles I have such an easy time getting through the grass. Even on a fat shot, the thinner sole isn't working as hard to get out of that turf. The difference in consistency of carry distance between the two is a huge thing, repeatable shots is consistent golf. Good work boys!

This video put a lot of things into perspective for me. A couple of years ago I got fitted for the Callaway Rogue Irons. While they were a vast improvement over the Strata box set irons I started with, I never quite got extremely comfortable with them. Like Ian mentioned with the thicker sole clubs, it always felt like I had to "pick" the ball. Fast forward a couple of years. I sent my fitting numbers along with some measurements over to Sub70. I went with the 699-Pros. I feel much more confident with the thinner sole, and the feeling that I'm going to chunk every shot is gone. Great video guys.

I prefer the slightly wider soul Ping glide 4.0 but it certainly is an individual thing. The turf type you play (thicker, tight), the type of swing you have (steep/shallow), and the feel you are looking for as well. Not to mention if you like to open the wedge up around greens for specialty shots. I don’t do that very often.

First time I've seen this discussed. I play Ping G25s which are very good but sometimes I feel there's just too much clubhead contacting the ground, especially when it's wet. I still have Ping i3s and an old set of Top-Flite Tour Titanium with much narrower soles, and they seem to make much cleaner contact with the ground as long as I'm not hitting down too much. I'm not currently shopping for new irons, but will keep your discussion in mind when I do. Guys keep talking about topics no one else seems to be addressing. Top notch.

This video highlights perfectly why I love Mizuno MMCs. I grew up learning the game with a player's cavity-backed blade (Taylormade C300 Tom Lehman Miura) and I learned to strike irons with that width of sole. I had already purchased the 919 Mizuno Hot Metal Pros prior to trying the MMCs, learned to love them, but never got on with the 5 iron as the sole is too thick - I replaced it with a 'thinner' HMB. My next set will be a player's width sole with tech and slightly stronger lofts (MMC/T100s) type clubs

I always knew my irons were the weak link in my game, and thought that wide sole irons were the answer, but they did not improve my ball striking. Hearing Ian talk about sweepers needing thinner soles, improving my wrist action in the backswing, and an improved fitting for lie angle made a big difference. All of this knowledge came from TXG videos. I hope I can visit them in Toronto sometime.

I'm a mid handicapper playing with TM M2 irons and I really think they're holding my game back. I've always felt like a good downward strike with my irons feels like I'm slamming the grass instead of gliding through it. That makes me throttle back my attack angle and try to pick it clean and end up thinning it more often. I want to try either blades or something not as forgiving to see if my divots will improve and I can actually follow through the ground instead of feeling like I'm punching the earth in the face. Thank you for doing this comparison. It supports my suspicion and I'll look deeper into it.

The shaft was totally wrong for me and I wasn’t a good ball striker, but I managed to score. Now, 20 years later, thanks in large part to TXG, I’m a much better ball striker. I’m playing JPX 919 Hot Metal Pros with my featherlight Zelos 7 shaft. But, I’m very aware of the heavy turf interaction. The conflict for me is how much I would give up in trajectory in exchange for better turf interaction.

Great video as always. I guess I have just gone in the opposite direction at least due to bounce on my irons, I got fitted for JPX919 forged and while they performed great for me indoors on the launch monitor, they were really poor out on course. Didn't get through the turf well and just dug into the ground deeper and deeper untill the club head stopped. This then lead to me thinning the ball more often as I was afraid to attack the ball. Switched to ping i210 and the sole bounce just works through the turf better for me. Looking at numbers online Ping are approx 8 degree of bounce on 7iron and Mizuno JPX are 2 degree for the same 7i club according to myspy? Definitely something I had not thought about inside on trackman, so get out on a course and try before you buy is an expensive lesson learnt for me!

Excellent video on a topic I knew nothing about. The only thing I knew was that I didn't like a very wide sole but I had no real reason for thinking that apart from aesthetics. I currently use some very old Miz irons (MX23) but will think about upgrading in the early part of next year. The JPX21 forged looks a good candidate, perhaps blended with Hot Metal Pro in the longer irons.

The video is so important. The sole makes a big difference. That why you need to get fitted and try all types of clubs. I'm a 9 HC that was fitted into Srixon Z Forged MB's. Sure I could hit a lot of clubs further that I tried. But I was way more consistent with the MB's. It has transferred to the course even better.

I recently switched from a players distance iron to a players cavity back iron and it has made an immediate impact on my game. I'm a sweeper with a shallow angle of attack and the narrower sole has improved my ball striking immensely. Gone is the slightly heavy contact, gone is the jumpy long left miss, and distance dispersion has tightened up considerably. Ive lost almost a full club of yardage but I've eliminated almost all of my misses and I've gained a punch shot that I could never hit with the players distance. Not to mention the prov1 behaves so much differently now. I'm playing a whole new game that I never could before. Like Ian said, it's not always about distance and forgiveness.

Loved the video! I'm one of the weirdos. Turf interaction is my number one concern. If I don't like my turf interaction, I feel like I can't strike a ball, even if it's in the middle of the clubface, the feedback just makes me feel like I'm all over the place. I've been fitted for great irons in the past, then gone to the course, and had to swap to a newer set because the interaction just didnt work for me.

I am actually throwing my MP-30's back in the bag because of how my PXG's interact with the turf. Now if you guys do a video that talks about when to add length to a club to bring the strike towards the center vs adjusting lie angle, or when to do the combination of the two, that would be amazing.

It would be interesting to do this with someone who needs a wide sole to show that it is important to get fit rather than a conclusion that someone may make that narrow is better than wide. Great video again

Ground interaction was a big thing in my fitting. I got fit for a jpx 919 combo set (4-5 forged 6-p tours) I like the feel of the tours going through the ground but I got a hair scared of top line in long irons (losing confidence) so fitting put me in combo. Now close to 2 years later I wish I had went with tours all the way threw cuz feel going threw the ground from 6 iron in tour to 5 iron in forged because how different feel is.

This is a brilliant video lads great job keep it up! Any chance of a video like this but with a mid handicapper with high swing speed, like a baseball player or hockey player who's taken up the game late? I've started golf in the last couple of years and I feel like my power is a hindrance at times with the difference in distance the ball goes with my beginner irons

The JPX 921 Forged seems like it could be the best combination of forgiveness, distance, turf interaction and feel.

@@jackvliet I am on the fence between what I think i need and want. Wanting the forged but thinking i should be a hot metal. Plan to get fitted this month. But this video is interesting about how I feel I dont like taking big divots and possibly needing less wide sole.

I've just swapped out JPX919 irons out for Apex Pro 19. I make much better contact and cut through the turf. Here in Australia the soil is sandy, dry and often very firm. I was hitting thin shots alot with Srixon Z545 and JPX919. I remembered how well I struck my Taylormade Rac lt irons previous and how they were smaller with a thinner sole. I took the Apex's out and instantly was more confident and getting penetrating flights.

Would love to see a review on Ping G410 irons what you think of them. How they compare to other wide soles / game improvement and tour level clubs.

Real observation here Ian. Turf interaction looked minimal from the camera view. Placing the ball directly behind a previous divot, I don't think your really testing the sole. Because your swing is bottoming out in the previous divot. I think you should have moved the ball around a bit. The reason I noticed is because I hit balls directly behind a divot on the practice range. With my steep delivery there is less shock to my hands with my wilson v6's, especially if the turf is dried out. I hope you read this!

GReat content boys.. I’m more of a “digger” with my mid-short irons. From what ive seen the Ping i210’s have a lot of bounce and a very forgiving sole for all of their irons ... Curious to see how the JPX 921 Forged will compare to the i210’s and/or their replacement irons.

Hi, Matt/Ian, loving all the videos, especially all the technical stuff. Question, why is turf interaction so important when surely the ball has already gone before you hit the turf?

I still don’t think I understand the player profile who’s best for the wide sole. But I’m definitely considering a smaller thinner head now. Great stuff.

I just picked the game back up after a big weight loss and have been trying to find my swing again I have always been a bit of a picker on my strikes i bought some Jpx 900 irons but was recently fitted for the 919 hm pro and I hit them better and feel the sole helps but I could be wrong.

Hey guy’s love the video as always. Had an idea or question. Getting back into Golfing and so my Wife wants to start as well. Nice family activity. Is their any way you could get a female golfer on the channel and do some videos like you do with Matt? Looking for a beginner pair of clubs for her but not junk beginner clubs. Keep the videos coming 👍

This is a great video, thank you so much for explaining this piece of the fitting puzzle. Been over 10 years since I was fitted for my Ping i10 irons. Yeah, I have old irons but I love them and don't have the cash for new ones at the moment. However, when I go in for my next fitting, how could I use this information about sole width to help with blending a set of irons? Thank you.

I struggle to hit down on the ball. Your channel inspired me as a new golfer to get custom fit for clubs. I barely scrape the ground and do not really take a divot. How does sole width come into play for someone like me?

"80 percent, 90 percent will funnel into Hot Metal Pro or Forged." Most of the rest of us are lefties. 😢 But the video is spot on. I'm a 20-handicap with a horribly inconsistent swing, but I was fit for Apex 19's after trying every GI iron on the shelf. I'm no Bryson, but I have enough speed where clean contact (on my good swings) is more important than extra help getting the ball airborne.

I still play Mp59s and play links courses - so narrow sole and hard turf. In the 3i slot I have a srixon zu85 - from the tee its great but sometimes have issues with the wide sole off the turf

That delivery is so different to mine. SGI irons always feel like they are knuckling for me. Pre-Ground soles are easier to control. If I was starting over I'd def go SGI again tho.

Really useful video. I'm right now thinking about the forged or the HMP. I'm a sweeper om 18 going downwards in HCP. Realy feel like my Cobra Max irons gets suckade into the grass when I hit them. Have 46 and 52 RTX4 wedges and hit them much better and really prefer that clean feel. What should I choose? Great vid as Always, thanks
