Would be really interested to see you do a retro fit. Someone who can’t afford or doesn’t want to buy all new clubs, but wants to dial in their current set with correct grip size, lie angles tweaks, loft adjustments, new driver shaft, etc.

One thing I’ve found with Retro fits is what happens when the club heads you have are wrong. Or the cost of reshafting irons outweighs the cost or value of the clubs themselves. Small tweaks like loft and lie are inexpensive but reshafting a set of old irons most times isn’t worth the price you end up paying. Likewise if you have a driver head which isn’t suited for you, you’re putting money into the wrong thing.

Definitely agree that reshafting old irons wouldn’t be worth the cost. However, I do think there’s value in looking at a new driver shaft and/or adjusting the loft. I started out with a 10.5 degree driver lofted up to 11 in a stock regular shaft. As I started to increase my swing speed I moved to a stiffer, more stable shaft and lowered the loft. It really helped tighten up my dispersion, get my launch in the right window, and added some distance.

I think reshafting old heads is totally worth it if you love the heads and they fit you well. Golf clubs definitely DEFINITELY are not an investment so do what you want to play better.

Everything I've learned myself exploring different grip sizes plus my own tennis background playing with much larger grips is that larger grips allow you to hold the grip lighter so your wrist & arm muscles will be more relaxed and are able to fire faster - so while you may think you aren't swinging faster, a larger grip, with relaxed forearms is able to produce more speed.

@@Momo_8k There was a crossover point mechanically for me where too big & I could not apply enough grip pressure - I would notice this crossover circumference while serving & not on my forehand or 1-hand backhand where I actually preferred using as large a grip as possible. I also didn't mind it on my 2nd serve where I was a very heavy spinner of the ball - it was really just a 1st serve power thing when I wanted to hit it nearly flat & as fast as possible that I could feel in my contorted wrist angle that too big was too big

This is probably specific to the certain sports. In biomechanics, there's a principle of Active Insufficiency: get a muscle busy doing one thing and it can't do another. In weight training there is an equation to figure out for every bit of grip thickness, how much heavier the weight will feel. With golf, I think the principle applies when it comes to the traditional thinking: thicker grips quiet the wrists. As the video shows, it's not always cut and dry.

So glad to see this concept covered, well done guys and thank you. This video gave me validation to something that I discovered experimenting. I struggled with trying to find the most comfortable grip till I tried a mid-sized grip and found for me that I was able to use less grip pressure during my swing. Then I kept trying to find a style that was most comfortable in the mid-size and settled on the Golf Pride Tour Velvet Mid until my last club fitting and with a suggestion from a fitter I ended up really liking the Golf Pride CP2 Wrap. Best, funny and sad part is I never tried a wrap just cause I did not really like the wrap look and yet it has become the most comfortable. You all gave a great idea to let a fitter experiment during a fitting to in reality be fitted for grips. Something that most won't think about and as small as it seems, the right grip can play a big influence in how we perform in our swings.

Fascinating stuff as always. I wear a small glove but recently went to midsize grips as they just felt better and improved my average strike. This has given me a little insight into why that might be the case 👍🏽

great content guys, love these test videos!! this is why I have a huge problem with fittings in my area, I play cp2 pro jumbo grips and everywhere that offers fittings don't change grips, so using a standard size is just uncomfortable and I don't get the most out of it. wish more places would consider changing grips for different people, especially when a person wears an xl-xxl glove!

I think the effects of grip size and maybe firmness are the most overlooked factors in club fitting. Thanks hugely for this video!

Over the years I have migrated from standard to midsize Grips and for the last 3 years, I have been using the JumboMax XL on all my clubs and totally LOVE them. My original motivation was arthritis in my fingers which got so bad that I was on the verge of quitting golf, now with the JumboMax XL Grips I can play totally pain-free with the added bonus that I can hit the Ball harder, so my yardages have improved as has my dispersion

I always had mid sized grips due to having larger hands but I recently switched over to Jumbo Max STR8 Tech (Medium) and my wrists feel much better. Def loving bigger grips, spendy but well worth it imo

I went up to mid size grips end of last season and liked what i was seeing so when I bought my new irons at the end of the year last year I fit mid size grips on them, I found I instantly had a lighter grip when i went up in size. I felt less likely to be choking the crap out the club and therefore I have been hitting straighter more consistently. I went bigger because of age and my arthritic hands and was told it would help, and boy it did.

I have recently switched to all midsize dritac grips. It’s made a massive difference for me, I have otherwise always struggled with feeling like I have to over grip the club. Something about even a larger tour velvet material grip makes me mentally feel like I have to choke the club too hard in order to have decent grip on the club. It has definitely freed up speed and consistency for me!

I find this interesting as I changed my grips from standard to midsize last year because they just felt better. Thanks guys.

Good video as always. There's definitely more to it than just the conventional wisdom of "smaller grip is easier to turn over". I recently switched from midsize to jumbomax on my driver and it helped turn my slice into a baby fade, which is opposite of the conventional wisdom. I'm not swinging the club any different on purpose but I do feel more comfortable with the jumbomax which may lead me to subconsciously swing the club a little different. Next up I may try a jumbomax on my fairway woods. Irons and wedges are probably staying with midsize though.

I've been playing standard-sized grips ever since I started playing 20 years ago, but this has made me wonder if perhaps I would see different results trying a midsize grip. I never even considered trying anything else because standard has always felt fine to me. Trying out a midsize grip is something I will look into experimenting with.

Last year in a charity tournmament I was partnered with someone who had the almost exact same driver as I had but with a Jumbomax grip (medium size) on their driver. I hit it so much better then my driver I changed almost imediately. I have had so much more control since I made the change. I'm a smaller fella and I used to play undersized grips feeling they fit my hand "better" but as I've played around more I find that I kinda like larger grips. I usually regrip my own sticks and I think next time I regrip I'm gonna go midsize or maybe even jumbo just for funzies. Anyway, love your channel and I love the way you all present your info. I think it’s great you guys revisited this topic. As a follow on, I would love to see comparisons between reduced taper and standard taper grips. Also I’d like to see what impact to swing weight has in changing grip sizes for the average golfer. I’ve always played standard grips until I discovered my hand/glove size suggests I need to go into a midsize grip. I swapped out grips but didn’t realize how much weight to the grip end of the club that change made to the overall swing weight. I’m not a robot so I can’t say for certain if that had any impact to my swing, but to remove that ‘variable’, I moved back to a standard grip (+4) with +2 wraps to give me more of tweener grip size and maintain the relatively same swingweight with std grip.

just regripped all mine with TV +4 midsize with extra layer of tape at bottom to reduce taper even more. So comfortable and really feel better control and able to put power through the club. Wish I'd done it 20 years ago

Top tier as always fellas. Regarding comment on the grip pressure differences between tour pros and amatuers, I heard the other day about a study on this, and although the pro will be gripping considerably "lighter" (50% compared to 70%) than an amatuer, their 50% is creating more pressure than an amatuers 70%, due to superior grip strength, whilst maintaining a more relaxed feeling grip.

I've played with many grips of different weights and sizes. I have longer fingers, and always felt uncomfortable until I finally went to very large grips. It also helps a ton to remove shape from my longer clubs.

Great video, I use Lamkin Oversized grips. I find them the most comfortable for me, with 2 full wraps. It makes a big difference for me in terms of releasing the club head. When I try my friends clubs with smaller grips, it does not feel comfortable,and I do not feel like I have the same control over the club head.

I played CP2 Wrap Midsize grips on all 13 grips for a year and after my fitting hitting Standard grips the whole time and then going back to the Midsize they felt super mushy. I moved into Lamkin Sonar+ Standard grips and they feel great in my irons, I've bought the rest of the set, excited to get everything regripped!

I went from Midsize with chronic deathgrip issues to jumbomaxes ultralites, and I'll never go back. Feels so much better, changed my strike location for some reason, helps with blisters, sore fingers, I no longer wear gloves etc. Downsides, I can't hold a standard grip to save my life. And they're expensive and hard to find in Canada.

Recently went to Dri-Tac Midsized grips with 4 wraps because I have larger hands and I found with standard sized grips, my finger tips would dig into my palms. My irons just feel solid in my hands now so I plan to have the same done to my wedges and woods sometime this year.

I switched to arthritic grips (72 to 75 grams, like a Jumbo) last year; needed to. As you mentioned less grip pressure and better ball striking. I utilized my large muscles and put less stress on my hands. Very good for me - 70 years old.

Loved this! My only issue I've ever had with grips is being shorter at 5'8 ish with a short palm and long fingers is swing weights with midsized grips. They can be quite heavy and really mess with how much awareness I have with the head. Winn grips being lite are neat but they dont handle high speed very well and twist unlike a good rubber grip. Going to experiment with a smaller jumbomax soon to see if they twist or shift during the swing.

I always had a problem with standard grips because I grew up playing with them and as I got older I had to squeeze the grips tighter and tighter for it to feel secure and it's created bad habits in my swing and grip pressure. A bigger grip has 100% helped me stay more loose while feeling like I have control.

Funny, just started to mess around with grip size before getting my new set of clubs (old Ping i15's w/ Standard grips). I've got decently large hands & I def get some harsh left shots when I know my grip gets too firm or I turn it over too much. I bought a Tour Velvet +4 Midsize for a wedge & it feels a lot better to control! I really feel my body controlling path a lot more, since my hands feel a lot more quiet with a Midsize. Excited to get some for my new set!

I changed regular Lamkin to Mid size Golf Pride TV in my 3 iron because it just wasn't comfortable and it took away my left miss. Now I understand why. Getting the others changed now. Looking forward to more head speed in all the others!

I’m age 69, 70 in 12/23. Hcp 6.2. Arthritis in my hands has become a major issue in my golf game. The inability to fully close the hands makes a larger grip essential. In addition to using some mid-size grips, I have experimented with using tennis wraps like tourna-grip or Gamma wraps on my standard grips with some success. I have become aware of the swing weight issue in larger or heavier grips. A lot to unpack. Thx for the video!

I recently upgraded my irons to a combo set of Taylormade P790s (6, 7 & 8) which I play as my 5, 6 & 7 irons and P7MCs in 8, 9 & PW. I went with the Golf Pride Z Grip 360 with 3 wraps on the bottom hand and 1 wrap on the top. I had always played standard grips but found that with the gentler taper, due to the extra bottom hand wraps, that I have more control and that I am not gripping quite as tight as I did with standard grips. It also feels more natural choking down the grip when not playing full shots.

Maybe next time you could use the Dri-Tac Winn grips. They are all 50 grams, from standard to oversize. That way the results aren't scewed by swing weight

hate going to a demo day etc, and all they have is standard size grips, I'm 6 3" and wear xxl gloves, standard size grips feel like toothpicks in my hands when I swing.

Physical therapist and trainer here. Always been interested in this issue…Comparing percentages of grip pressure between pros and amateurs is only valuable if you know what the max grip pressure is for each individual. For example a pro with a max grip pressure measured at 50kg gripping it at 55% when hitting golf shots is applying 27.5kg of pressure. But if the amateurs max measured grip pressure is 30kg then that same 27.5kg is actually 91% of their max pressure. It’s also true that all individuals can apply more grip pressure when their joints are positioned in a mid range vs. all the way closed or all the way open. Have always felt like you just can’t afford to lose grip pressure/energy transfer between the hands and the club. Would definitely err on the side of bigger grips for this reason and I think the stark difference in club head speed in this test shows this. Great video.

I've played standard size tour velvet for 30 years. 6 months ago I demoed a 3 wood with midsize Golf Pride CP2 Pro wrap. Epiphany: I used less hand squeeze that relaxed my swing. I put the midsize CP2 on all my clubs. Hasn't lowered my handicap, but my arthritic fingers hurt less after 18 holes.

Recently changed from standard MCC Plus 4 to MCC Plus 4 midsize. Remarkable difference in such a small change, especially in the irons.

I played Winn jumbo for a couple years. Half way through last year I switched to the JumboMax xSmall (still large +3/16”)ST8Tech ultralight. For me I like the light grip pressure while easily hanging onto the club. I hit the ball pretty straight with them as well. I started with my driver and 3 wedges(swing weight D4). I liked them enough to swap out the rest of my bag.

Wear a medium glove & just made the switch to midsize last season. Bought a used wedge set that had midsize on them and liked them so much I regripped my irons to match. Easy switch, more comfortable and I definitely use less pressure now. Anybody on the fence should try them. Just start with a 7 or 8 iron. Cheap experiment.

I game the JMX Ultralite XL in my irons and love it.

First thing I do when I buy a club is tear off the grip and put on a Tour Velvet midsize grip. I hit standard size just fine but midsize is just more comfortable.

Interesting one. My hands are "low volume" or "piano fingers". That is to say "XL" glove for correct length but just "ML" palm and finger diameter. Gloves and grips are just pure confounding me. I have built up some different grips and found it really interesting... but not yet definitive, except if I play standard size I get cramps in hands during a range session while midsize or larger is fine. Also the adaption I had to make between Tour Velvet midsize and midsize MCC+4 was surprisingly large.

Hi Guys! I wish you would test the Jumbomax grips. I use the jumbomax tour series small grips. I don't tend to grip as hard on the club and I'm getting somewhere between 5 to 10 yards more because my hands are not as tight. Great video as always! Keep it up! Mark

Very interesting. I myself was just wondering the other day if I need to look into undersize grips...I have small hands and feel like there is a lack of ability to have consistent clubface control at times. Definitely going to try them out.

Just in time for the re-grip event at GT, my current grips are quite worn down and was going to just grab a standard black full-cord replacement based on the feel in store itself, but maybe they've got some demo clubs with different grip sizes that I could try out to see if anything different feels better or worse

Always messing around with different size grips mainly on my woods and wedges. Little hack I learnt was to use you car tyre pump if you have one and a ball inflation needle to blow them on and off. Got plenty of funny looks in the driving range carpark doing it.

Love it guys! Just got fitted by a professional and was told I was using the wrong grip all this time. I have now been fitted for a midsize mcc plus 4. Can't wait to use them!

I'm going to definitely look into gripsize when I regrip this season.

I play Jumbo Max Lite on my driver and fairways and Tour Velvet midsize on my other clubs. The Jumbo Max lite do not change swing weight as much. There is a great video of Retief Goosen discussing how the size and weight of a grip affect the timing of his swing. He plays Jumbo Max and has some very informative comments.

Since I switched to midsize my swing feels so much more relaxed. Definitely a better feel with less grip pressure.

This is definitely something I’ve been thinking of last couple years… Have always used standard. But, might try mid at some point

Hand size (especially finger length) is a key consideration in this for me. If a grip is too large (at least for me), it’s harder to keep a strong grip “in the fingers” of of my left hand

I've got small hands and have always played standard sized grips - only because thats what I "thought" I was supposed to play as someone who wears a size S glove. Over the winter, I have been working on loosing my over hook and am using mid sized grips to help reduce grip pressure and to help with better face control. Maybe its a placebo effect but I do feel that the larger (mid sized MCC+4) grip has helped me grip it softer which in turn keeps my once over flippy hands a bit quieter. Win.

I picked up used clubs with undersized grips. Got five wraps of tape under them and they feel more like midsize grips. Now I can swing more freely without thinking about pulls that I used to get with the without the wraps.

Last year I switched to CP2 jumbo grips from golf pride. It definitely eased my grip pressure and alleviated pain in my forearms. The other thing I noticed is it made my club heads feel much lighter. I liked the lighter feel but on the flip side it was harder to feel my clubhead position.

Recently watched another of your videos about this same test. I was excited after watching that one because the smaller the grip the more right it was (left handed tester). This video didn't really see that same pattern. Ordered a midsize grip to see if it tames down my draw. I was anticipating delivery based on your other video. After watching this, I'm not as optimistic. Will test with fingers crossed.

You guys hit on it but held off making an absolute confirmation. Its all about grip pressure and the less the better basically. In my view, there is no question that larger grips tend to encourage a lighter hold because we feel like the club is under control. Soooo, we should find the grip size that lets us grip the club "properly" so that the swing is unhindered by grip pressure. I have small hands and a standard grip is not as comfortable as a midsize. All my clubs have midsize grips but now I think I'll dig a little further - maybe not up to the Jumbo size but maybe more underlying tape....... PS: Very good work.

I switched to the Bryson JumboMax light grips when hand surgery made standard grips excruciating, and also began holding the club baseball style. So comfortable and confidence inspiring, and I've stopped wearing a glove. Didn't see any effect on ball path except my ball now goes a lot longer.

I switched when I had Radial Tunnel issues. Helped a lot. Once that got sorted out, I moved back to smaller grips. (Small of the jumbo max then now jumbo sized) I keep delivering the face closed and feel like it's the grips... maybe it's just me being terrible 😂

Two other points at play here: playing an incorrectly sized grip is a risk factor for medial epicondylitis ("golfer's elbow") which may take a few weeks to develop depending on how much one plays. Six-to-8 weeks recovery time is not unusual for this tendinitis. The other factor regarding grip pressure, there are well know tables in the ergonomic and biomechanic literature that illustrate the effect of the diameter of the object being gripped vs the maximum grip force the can be applied, the Maximum Voluntary Contraction (MVC). Golf grips are very small relative to the size for maximum MVC, but you wouldn't want to play with that sized grip (Apprx. 3.7cm) because releasing the club would be more than difficult. Golf grips are "inefficient" in this regard but reinforces your point that applying maximum grip pressure is NOT what you want to do. A test with non-taper grips would be intriguing. I have played mid-sized non-taper grips for quite some time to mitigate medial epicondylitis.

I recently had the same dilemma. I wear a large glove and I've played, at least 2 years, with 4 layers +mid size grip. From a comfort perspective, it felt good as I thought that I had the club secured in my hands. Over the years, as I got a little better, I started to roll my wrist as I intuitively felt like the face was open. This led to very inconsistent strike patterns which weren't so good for my game. I recently returned back to 2 layers + mid size. I noticed that I had a tighter dispersion (especially with my irons) which was a function of better contact and feel. The driver on the other hand is a bit iffy. I guess I need to get used to it 😅

Oh my god. So I picked up a set of use MP-20 irons and they had standard GP TV on them. My wedges have standard MCC, and I tried the grip pressure test, and with the standard TV, the toe turned in, but with the MCC it didn't. Both standard size. I'm heading to get MCC put on my irons lol - Amazing.

I’m a big body rotator and the hands don’t keep up so add tons of dynamic loft by keeping the face too open. Went from standard to undersize and compression and strike were amazing. Changed my game, to low single digit.

That's fascinating about the grip pressure. I always feel my poor rounds come from tension and I never even thought of pressure closing the face (tried thr parallel club and sure as s**t... Is closes)

I use lamkin midsize +1tape in 3-9 and jumbo with 1tape in my wedges and woods( inc driver) i found its straightend my wood shots nicely and gave me better feel and consistency with my wedges, especially around the greens.. my irons are good with the midsize but Im tempted to go jumbo in my irons aswell. Gonna try it on my 3 iron first as i do tend to over draw that a bit and see how it goes.

I just did this before ordering my new irons (hours ago) and comparing my current standard vs. an experimental 6i with a MCC +4 Standard and a 7i MCC+4 Midsize (also tried a buddies Midsize) to really get a feel for all the options. Super fun, really helpful and a huge confidence builder to KNOW what I like. Well-timed video!

@@TheDukeSilver69 I greatly preferred the Standard +4 as I have smaller fingers (Wear a Cadet M glove for example) and the standard upper (lead hand) felt as comfortable and natural as my current grips, and the lower (trail hand) really likes the +4 which mimics 4 extra wraps on the lower hand, and in my assessment felt like a standard lead hand, midsized lower hand - Goldilocks style. I find that it takes my trail hand out a little bit and I use less grip pressure. Going midsized just felt a little too big and potentially just too much of a jump from what I am used to. I did the same standard +4 on my wedges, and need to test that out compared to just standard for "feel" shots. Absolutely would recommend the investment on your clubs to at least replace 1-2 grips and hit plenty of balls outside to gauge your feel and flight.

Be conscious of the weight of the grips as they have a considerable effect on swing weight and balance of the club. Especially if you are moving to an oversize grip. I made the mistake of installing the lamkin crossline oversize, a very popular grip, great look and feel but didn't realize it weighs 75g. I lost 3 swing-weight points. The only JUMBO i have found that is in the same weight ballpark as a standard or mid size grip and not "jumbo max or winn brand" is the golf pride tour velvet.

On my drivers I have played a mid-sized minimum taper grip for several years, and a nice fade was the normal. In the middle of last year I tried a jumbo grip on my backup driver and that was nothing but hook, pull hooks and duck hooks, , and was cut off in no time and back to my normal grip, take from that what you want.

I play a Finau inspired setup, lamkin UTX midsize with two extra total wraps and four extra on right hand. Love the feel and face control.

Could you guys do a quick comparison between standards and non-tapered grips (Golf Pride plus4). And maybe discuss what difference the extra weight in the hands will have on swing weight. Great video.

I’ve always used standard and I have big feet and big hands and last year I was pulling scoring clubs so I got a few mcc plus 4’s to try out on a few scoring clubs. Try those b4 going midsize.

I had standard for years and switched to medium. I found that my dispersion was closer. I was definitely more dialed in. I had less extreme misses left or right. I think it was just more a a natural feel thing. I also realized that standard grips for me were absolutely too small so there was more wobble at times (causing the dispersion.)

Having some trigger finger issues and arthritis going on, I've recently went from midsize to oversize in my irons, WINN DRI-TAC LITE oversize. Like the feel with oversize, makes me have less grip pressure

Good stuff boys, you should try jumbo max ultralite str8 in xs size. They have zero taper you will be surprised

Cheapest way to try it is put a tennis overwrap on the existing grip....if it's good it becomes super cheap to do the whole set

Very interested in trying the jumbo or midsized. Just changed wedges to GP full cord with 2 layers of tap and like the feel moving from GP-Z cord with one layer.
