Nah, in this game, a shitter can't beat a good player by mashing (in a 1v1 at least). Or at least it could beat them by luck once, but never again after that. A good player can play around it.

How effective Hardswapping is, depends 90% on how your inventory is organized. The input itself is easy, comparable to a hadoken from street fighter but obviously with some variations from what you’re actually swapping to. It’s also better in invasions, surprising someone in a duel with a hard swap is only gonna work once, then they know why you’re giving yourself space and push your shit in, same as spamming hadokens in streetfighter

Hardswaps are definitely used in duels, just for different reasons. You're less doing it to surprise someone and more for utility. Swapping from frost to another infusion after proccing frostbite for more damage, swapping to phalanx, poise reset with storm stomp, swapping to a better weapon matchup, or a TS swap to finish a low health enemy. Invasions have overlap, but stuff like BFT/SHA gank catches which work in invasions won't really be seen in duels.

I always played locked and not even using special techs, but I win the majority of the duels, so it works for me.

I wish you(or other creators) would make more content like this. discussing meta, quirks of certain weapons, different match ups, other intricacies etc. It seems like you have to be a full time discord dweller to be up to date knowledge wise. we do get certain quips here and there on streams, but it's mostly unstructured and beyond obscure.

Appreciate the response, Steel! I do have a followup question though; do you think latency plays a considerable factor in the Elden Ring tournament scene? In my experience, high lat players are a lot more difficult to deal with than in previous souls iterations simply due to how high the i frames are in this game, passive poise, etc...

i played in a few tournaments so let me anwser this - not really.. most tourneys nowdays are region locked (EU, NA, etc. ) so all fights are generally +/- 70ms which is not an issue.

I know it's not optimal but I take GREAT joy in outplaying people who constantly change weapons to a counter setup with just using my loadout. I am also a fashion gamer lol.

This is the way, but you need to have a good setup with some type of range attacks, or a poking weapon for people that like to run or play too passive. I love my ultra Greatsword but I need my dagger in my left hand for bloodhound step or quickstep users

I still like great swords better than curved great swords, but I think I need to do more invasions with the curved great sword more and just git gud with them, lol. Love the videos steel, I learn tons of things and get better at pvp just from watching your videos.

@@Buddyguy1988 you shouldn't underestimate Jee as a duelist. Just because he plays more defensively in invasions doesn't mean he's not a very talented player with very good fundamentals. I do think that he suffers sometimes from a lack of risk taking when it comes to aggression in invasions, though. Often there are kills he could almost certainly secure that he gives up on to top up, and there's a lot of wasted healing in fear of the blender that isn't necessary.

@@lolwtfover9k I had the opportunity to duel with Jee in dark souls 3. I was defeated, he is very calm playing, I lost because he predicted almost everything I did, it takes skill for that. I played duels all day long, so I had some skill, especially in some hardswaps, but nothing too pro.

Playing ds2 helped me a lot with lock off gameplay i wasnt able to play like that before it

Don't be coming at CGS like that though, let's be honest, they were dogshit before. There was such shit recovery on the weapon that you couldn't use them against any kind of competent players. CGS is great now, and it definitely feels easy, but so is psss, moonbeil, cleanrot, etc.

I'm ok. My win/loss ratio could probably be much better if not for fashion > poise.

After finally getting a “viable” build as a “pure” hybrid spell caster @ 150 that I like I’ve realized it will never be on the level of a competitive player. That said I’ll just have to sit back at watch the skilled warriors do their thing. Maybe one day builds like Cadman and other casters will be able to compete but till then it’s definitely a ash of war and weapons rule pvp game.

ah... after all these years playing this game's pvp, i'll say no, especially in ER but probably it's my fault, i tent to force myself to use the stuff i love, more than the meta, like for example; even before the buffs claymore was my bread and butter weapon, because i loved it since DS1. but even if my opponent was using something stronger than claymore i just keept playing with it. i'm not used also to do hard swaps, but that probably because in ds2 (my main pvp game) it was not necesary at least for me (also i didn't think that was necesary because almost all the weapons in ds2 were worth using). i also tend to play unlock because of that and ngl someweapons benefit from that like you said HTS for the reasons you said, but others like Godskin GS, knights GS, Nightraider Glaive because their combos. i still don't know 100% how latency works in this games.

90% of elden ring pvp is running r1's the other 10% is waiting for your opponent to get aggressive and make an opening. Id argue its less skill based and more about what weapon youre using conpared to the person youre fighting.

Steelovsky please let’s make something like acumúlate signs for fromsoft to make elden rings pvp just like dark souls 2 You know to be skillful and to have more enjoyable and interesting mechanics Elden ring frustrates me cuz it has a lot of potential but is not exploited I really want this game to work but the pvp requires no skills and there is no reward while invading is like you do a character for nothing

Playing unloccked just feels so unweildy and unintuitive, but I know its supposed to be great. My biggest issue is trying to manage my camera direction whilst actuslly still being accurate in my attacks. Especially with poke weapons.

Meh, Im ok. I understand spacing, timing, how to roll catch and how to avoid getting roll caught. And I can apply them decently maybe 75% of the time. But I have no interest in becoming a super sweatlord. So when I meet one in the arena I tend to struggle. I know my limits.

Worst pvp of all games. That spacing thing looks like parkinson.

Competitive tournaments mean absolutely nothing in this game. Even those stats/rankings you mentioned are based entirely on luck/latency/how they feel on the day etc. You can have a streak of insane wins but it's certainly not based on the skill of the player given how often the game can absolutely fudge you with regards with input drops, spacing, frames being screwy, whether you're duping etc. That applies to Elden ring or any souls PvP they have never implemented competitive tournament ranking systems because the game's PvP isn't designed that way except maybe DS2 and the BoB and BS. Which of course was in DS2 which remains the gold standard for PvP in souls games.

Item duping is the highest cancer on this game imo. I play on console so I cant dupe reliably without taking hours upon hours. but almost every other person does, and I'm sick of people having infinite items that were clearly only meant to be VERY rare.

@@mechamahou8467 Elden Ring launched in the era of "I want everything all the time right now" tis a shame because the previous titles were built initially on rare drops/items/etc being a resourceful case by case basis(divine blessings beings a great example early on in DS1s life) but that's obviously not the case with ER, particularly in PvP scenarios. I play on PC now and I just don't dupe. It spoils the game for me personally. I'm probably an outlier in that regard but I'm ok with that! Ha ha ha.

I think from what i learned for my encounter with the legend him self (I it was him, think there was. A fake running round too) is that I can get nervous and mess up in a real situation when pressure is applied. Bc I freaked out and panicked out of sheer fear for my life. Being starsruck also helped. Honestly caught off guard and that’s my main problem bc when that happens any practice and skill (if any) I have goes out the window when 1; I panic 2; forget my fundamentals. Bc I have no excuse for my build being the way it was at time. Still unbelievable and 1 in a million chance I got invaded by my favorite streamer but it was so fun regardless and scary!!😂😂😂😅😭🤣🥲

I had a crazy fun invasion one time but by the end of it (other red had enough of it, started deleting people) I got a mail form a co with attached screenshot of 25 gundyrs! I did feel weak in that moment 🥲Ouch ...and I know what he meant, but it was a good long scrap overall, I though we were both having fun 😂🙄
